2010 Untangling the Web of Relationships Between Wealth, Culture, and Global Software Piracy Rates: A Path Model
abstract
This article examines the relationship between Hofstede’s national culture indices (IDV, PSI, MAS, and UAI), economic wealth (GNI), and national software piracy rates (SPR). Although a number of studies have already examined this relationship, the contribution of this article is two-fold. First, we develop a path model that highlights not only the key factors that promote software piracy, but also the inter-relationships between these factors. Second, most studies have used the dataset from the pre-2003 methodology which only accounted for business software and did not take into account local market conditions. Using the latest dataset and a large sample of countries (n=61) we find there is an important triadic relationship between PDI, IDV, and GNI that explains over 80% of the variance in software piracy rates. Implications for combating software piracy are discussed.

2001 The Emergence of Networked Organizations in India: A Misalignment of Interests?
abstract
We present a potential misalignment that many emerging economies may face with respect to the advent of networked organisations. We argue that although it may seem that networked organisations appear to offer a viable option for the progress of a nation, a deeper analysis suggests otherwise. This will be exemplified through the case of The Engineering Corporation and its presence in India. While The Engineering Corporation does indeed provide employment to the local economy, the host country must determine the right mix of the aspects involved in the collaborative venture. If this care is not taken, there will be little benefit for the host country, thus resulting in a skewed orientation in the relationship.

2000 Cultural Problems in Applying SSM for IS Development
abstract
Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) is a general problem structuring approach that seeks to incorporate multiple stakeholder views in the analysis of a given problem. When applied to IS development, the method requires negotiation and debate between the stakeholders when exploring the feasibility of developing an information system. The applicability of this approach depends, however, on the willingness of participants to enter into such an open discussion. This paper reports on a case study that highlights the problems of applying such a confrontational method in an Eastern culture, such as Hong Kong. Three main problems were identified: Group discussions were avoided; Interviews were conducted in multiple languages; and, High staff turnover made it difficult to develop and maintain mature stakeholder views.
