| 2024 | Cross-modality Multiple Relations Learning for Knowledge-based Visual Question AnsweringabstractKnowledge-based visual question answering not only needs to answer the questions based on images but also incorporates external knowledge to study reasoning in the joint space of vision and language. To bridge the gap between visual content and semantic cues, it is important to capture the question-related and semantics-rich vision-language connections. Most existing solutions model simple intra-modality relation or represent cross-modality relation using a single vector, which makes it difficult to effectively model complex connections between visual features and question features. Thus, we propose a cross-modality multiple relations learning model, aiming to better enrich cross-modality representations and construct advanced multi-modality knowledge triplets. First, we design a simple yet effective method to generate multiple relations that represent the rich cross-modality relations. The various cross-modality relations link the textual question to the related visual objects. These multi-modality triplets efficiently align the visual objects and corresponding textual answers. Second, to encourage multiple relations to better align with different semantic relations, we further formulate a novel global-local loss. The global loss enables the visual objects and corresponding textual answers close to each other through cross-modality relations in the vision-language space, and the local loss better preserves semantic diversity among multiple relations. Experimental results on the Outside Knowledge VQA and Knowledge-Routed Visual Question Reasoning datasets demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. | 2022 | Abusive Language Detection with Graph based Multi-task LearningabstractTo counter the online abusive language in social media, it is desirable to develop automated detection methods. Previous research has primarily formulated this problem as a sentence-level classification task, ignoring the crucial role of abusive lexicons that can strengthen the model explainability and enable more faithful predictions. Although a few methods have introduced the abusive lexicons for detection, the lexicons they use are either externally provided or labeled by human annotators, suffering from two limitations: (1) lack adaptability to diverse and evolving offensive scenarios; (2) require large human efforts to annotate the words. This paper overcomes the limitations of prior work with a multi-task abusive language detection framework. It combines sentence-level and word-level classification tasks, based on dependency tree based graph attention networks (GAT). With the two tasks, it is encouraged to capture both global and local data properties to produce better sentence representations. It is also advantageous in automatic lexicon construction during the learning process, without human annotations. Extensive experiments on two public datasets exhibit that our proposal can outperform the state-of-the-art baselines. Case studies show that the model explainability can be strengthened with the abusive parts identified by our framework. Our code is released to public.1 Chunyun Zhang, Xi Zhang 0008, Quan Wang 0002, Jiayi Liang, Sanchuan Guo, Wenyu Zang, Yongdong Zhang 0001 |

| 2022 | MFAN: Multi-modal Feature-enhanced Attention Networks for Rumor DetectionabstractRumor spreaders are increasingly taking advantage of multimedia content to attract and mislead news consumers on social media. Although recent multimedia rumor detection models have exploited both textual and visual features for classification, they do not integrate the social structure features simultaneously, which have shown promising performance for rumor identification. It is challenging to combine the heterogeneous multi-modal data in consideration of their complex relationships. In this work, we propose a novel Multi-modal Feature-enhanced Attention Networks (MFAN) for rumor detection, which makes the first attempt to integrate textual, visual, and social graph features in one unified framework. Specifically, it considers both the complement and alignment relationships between different modalities to achieve better fusion. Moreover, it takes into account the incomplete links in the social network data due to data collection constraints and proposes to infer hidden links to learn better social graph features. The experimental results show that MFAN can detect rumors effectively and outperform state-of-the-art methods. | 2022 | Semantically Similarity-Wise Dual-Branch Network for Scene Graph GenerationabstractScene graph generation aims to detect visual entities and relationships between them from an image. The object-level visual information is of vital importance for predicting accurate relationships. However, most existing methods essentially encode visual information with coarse supervised information, since they regard different relationships as mutually exclusive semantics with equal-distance labels by taking cross-entropy function as the main training loss. Intuitively, different relationship semantics naturally have their own similarity and dissimilarity with different level distances,i.e., the topological information of relationship semantics. It can serve as an inspiring hint to aid learning to grasp the key related visual information. Accordingly, we propose a Semantically Similarity-wise Dual-branch Network (SSDN) which introduces topological information of relationship semantics as extra supervision to aid learning extracting and encoding relationship-related visual information. To avoid possible chaotic feature learning and enable the introduced knowledge to be better absorbed during inference, we design a dual-branch framework consisting of an auxiliary branch and an inference branch. The topological information extracted from the groundtruth is introduced at the front end of the auxiliary branch which then generates a soft embedding to be propagated to the inference branch in a knowledge distillation manner. Extensive experiments show that our model averagely outperforms state-of-the-art approaches on benchmark Visual Genome and VRD significantly, which demonstrates its effectiveness and superiority. | 2019 | A Neighbor-aware Approach for Image-text MatchingabstractImage-text matching has received a large amount of interest since it associates different modalities and improves the understanding of image and natural language. It aims to retrieval semantic related images based on the given text query, and vice versa. Existing approaches have achieved much progress by projecting the image and text into a common space where data with different semantics can be distinguished. However, they process all the data points uniformly, while neglecting that data in a neighborhood are harder to distinguish due to their visual similarity or syntactic structural similarity. To address this issue, we propose a neighbor-aware network to image-text matching where an intra-attention module and neighbor-aware ranking loss are proposed to jointly distinguish data with different semantics, more importantly, semantic unrelated data in a neighborhood can be distinguished. The intra-attention attends to discriminative parts by comparing data with different semantics and magnifying difference between them, especially subtle difference between data in a neighborhood. The neighbor-aware ranking loss function utilizes the magnified difference to explicitly and effectively discriminate data in a neighborhood. We conduct extensive experiments on several benchmarks and show that the proposed approach significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art. Zhendong Mao 0001, Wenyu Zang, Bin Wang 0004 |

| 2015 | On the Upper Bounds of Spread for Greedy Algorithms in Social Network Influence MaximizationabstractInfluence maximization, defined as finding a small subset of nodes that maximizes spread of influence in social networks, is NP-hard under both Independent Cascade (IC) and Linear Threshold (LT) models, where many greedy-based algorithms have been proposed with the best approximation guarantee. However, existing greedy-based algorithms are inefficient on large networks, as it demands heavy Monte-Carlo simulations of the spread functions for each node at the initial step [7]. In this paper, we establish new upper bounds to significantly reduce the number of Monte-Carlo simulations in greedy-based algorithms, especially at the initial step. We theoretically prove that the bound is tight and convergent when the summation of weights towards (or from) each node is less than 1. Based on the bound, we propose a new Upper Bound based Lazy Forward algorithm (UBLF in short) for discovering the top-k influential nodes in social networks. We test and compare UBLF with prior greedy algorithms, especially CELF [30]. Experimental results show that UBLF reduces more than 95 percent Monte-Carlo simulations of CELF and achieves about 2-10 times speedup when the seed set is small. | 2014 | Topic Block: Mining User Inner Interests for Text and Link Analysis in Social NetworksabstractText corpus and link network are interrelated data in social networks. Discovering the inner relationship between these two kinds of data can help better understand the evolution mechanism underneath social networks. Moreover, social networks exhibit unique characteristics such as sparse and noisy in both text and link data. Thus, it is imperative to combine both text and link data to complement and correct mining results. However, previous work did not explore a uniform generative model that can unveil their inner relationship probably because of the difficulty to harness the heterogenous data in social networks. To address this issue, in this paper we present a generative model Topic Block that clearly pinpoints the latent concept underlying the text corpus and link network, i.e., User inner interests. In our generative model, user inner interests guide the generation of the topic and community distributions underlying the text corpus and link data. We can infer the topic and community distributions based on the user inner interests through both content and topology information. Compared to existing popular models, our method experimentally outperforms on three real world social network data sets. Wenyu Zang, Chuan Zhou 0001, Xiao Wang 0001, Li Guo 0001 |
