| 2010 | PROSPECT: a system for screening candidates for recruitmentabstractCompanies often receive thousands of resumes for each job posting and employ dedicated screeners to short list qualified applicants. In this paper, we present PROSPECT, a decision support tool to help these screeners shortlist resumes efficiently. Prospect mines resumes to extract salient aspects of candidate profiles like skills, experience in each skill, education details and past experience. Extracted information is presented in the form of facets to aid recruiters in the task of screening. We also employ Information Retrieval techniques to rank all applicants for a given job opening. In our experiments we show that extracted information improves our ranking by 30% there by making screening task simpler and more efficient. | 2006 | Factorizing Complex Models: A Case Study in Mention DetectionabstractAs natural language understanding research advances towards deeper knowledge modeling, the tasks become more and more complex: we are interested in more nuanced word characteristics, more linguistic properties, deeper semantic and syntactic features. One such example, explored in this article, is the mention detection and recognition task in the Automatic Content Extraction project, with the goal of identifying named, nominal or pronominal references to real-world entities---mentions---and labeling them with three types of information: entity type, entity subtype and mention type. In this article, we investigate three methods of assigning these related tags and compare them on several data sets. A system based on the methods presented in this article participated and ranked very competitively in the ACE'04 evaluation. Radu Florian, Hongyan Jing, Nanda Kambhatla, Imed Zitouni |

| 2004 | A Mention-Synchronous Coreference Resolution Algorithm Based On the Bell TreeabstractThis paper proposes a new approach for coreference resolution which uses the Bell tree to represent the search space and casts the coreference resolution problem as finding the best path from the root of the Bell tree to the leaf nodes. A Maximum Entropy model is used to rank these paths. The coreference performance on the 2002 and 2003 Automatic Content Extraction (ACE) data will be reported. We also train a coreference system using the MUC6 data and competitive results are obtained. Xiaoqiang Luo, Abraham Ittycheriah, Hongyan Jing, Nanda Kambhatla, Salim Roukos |

| 2003 | tRuEcasIngabstractTruecasing is the process of restoring case information to badly-cased or non-cased text. This paper explores truecasing issues and proposes a statistical, language modeling based truecaser which achieves an accuracy of ~98% on news articles. Task based evaluation shows a 26% F-measure improvement in named entity recognition when using truecasing. In the context of automatic content extraction, mention detection on automatic speech recognition text is also improved by a factor of 8. Truecasing also enhances machine translation output legibility and yields a BLEU score improvement of 80.2%. This paper argues for the use of truecasing as a valuable component in text processing applications. Lucian Vlad Lita, Abraham Ittycheriah, Salim Roukos, Nanda Kambhatla |

| 1997 | Dimension Reduction by Local Principal Component AnalysisabstractReducing or eliminating statistical redundancy between the components of high-dimensional vector data enables a lower-dimensional representation without significant loss of information. Recognizing the limitations of principal component analysis (PCA), researchers in the statistics and neural network communities have developed nonlinear extensions of PCA. This article develops a local linear approach to dimension reduction that provides accurate representations and is fast to compute. We exercise the algorithms on speech and image data, and compare performance with PCA and with neural network implementations of nonlinear PCA. We find that both nonlinear techniques can provide more accurate representations than PCA and show that the local linear techniques outperform neural network implementations. Nanda Kambhatla, Todd K. | 1994 | Classifying with Gaussian Mixtures and ClustersabstractIn this paper, we derive classifiers which are winner-take-all (WTA) approximations to a Bayes classifier with Gaussian mixtures for class conditional densities. The derived classifiers include clustering based algorithms like LVQ and k-Means. We propose a constrained rank Gaussian mixtures model and derive a WTA algorithm for it. Our experiments with two speech classification tasks indicate that the constrained rank model and the WTA approximations improve the performance over the unconstrained models.
