2025 Design of a Formation Control System to Assist Human Operators in Flying a Swarm of Robotic Blimps
abstract
Formation control is essential for swarm robotics, enabling coordinated behavior in complex environments. In this paper, we introduce a novel formation control system for an indoor blimp swarm using a specialized leader-follower approach enhanced with a dynamic leader-switching mechanism. This strategy allows any blimp to take on the leader role, distributing maneuvering demands across the swarm and enhancing overall formation stability. Only the leader blimp is manually controlled by a human operator, while follower blimps use onboard monocular cameras and a laser altimeter for relative position and altitude estimation. A leader-switching scheme is proposed to assist the human operator to maintain stability of the swarm, especially when a sharp turn is performed. Experimental results confirm that the leader-switching mechanism effectively maintains stable formations and adapts to dynamic indoor environments while assisting human operator.

2024 Optimization of Software Component Allocation for Autonomous Driving in Cloud-Vehicular Edge
abstract
A computing system for autonomous vehicles must efficiently process vast amounts of data from various sensors in real-time and have a backup design to handle system failures. Adding more computing devices improves performance and redundancy, but increases costs and energy consumption. With the development of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication technologies and edge computing, such as multiaccess edge computing (MEC), computation offloading has been introduced. This process involves the use of cloud or edge servers to handle calculations normally performed by on-board computers, thereby reducing their workload and offering redundancy. This article proposes an offloading strategy that optimizes the allocation of software components (SWCs) in autonomous driving software. By optimizing SWC allocation, SWCs can be effectively assigned to specific computing units. This article established a cost function and constraints based on SWC-specific features to address the offloading decision problem as an allocation optimization issue. This article also defines safety-related metrics, including the response time requirements and failure risks of SWCs, to set criteria for offloading decisions. The proposed SWC optimization method is tested and validated using a real autonomous driving vehicle demonstration involving both cloud and vehicular edge environments.

2023 DäRF: Boosting Radiance Fields from Sparse Input Views with Monocular Depth Adaptation
abstract
Neural radiance field (NeRF) shows powerful performance in novel view synthesis and 3D geometry reconstruction, but it suffers from critical performance degradation when the number of known viewpoints is drastically reduced. Existing works attempt to overcome this problem by employing external priors, but their success is limited to certain types of scenes or datasets. Employing monocular depth estimation (MDE) networks, pretrained on large-scale RGB-D datasets, with powerful generalization capability may be a key to solving this problem: however, using MDE in conjunction with NeRF comes with a new set of challenges due to various ambiguity problems exhibited by monocular depths. In this light, we propose a novel framework, dubbed DäRF, that achieves robust NeRF reconstruction with a handful of real-world images by combining the strengths of NeRF and monocular depth estimation through online complementary training. Our framework imposes the MDE network's powerful geometry prior to NeRF representation at both seen and unseen viewpoints to enhance its robustness and coherence. In addition, we overcome the ambiguity problems of monocular depths through patch-wise scale-shift fitting and geometry distillation, which adapts the MDE network to produce depths aligned accurately with NeRF geometry. Experiments show our framework achieves state-of-the-art results both quantitatively and qualitatively, demonstrating consistent and reliable performance in both indoor and outdoor real-world datasets.

2022 Robust Localization in Map Changing Environments Based on Hierarchical Approach of Sliding Window Optimization and Filtering
abstract
Precise localization in map-changing environments is a major challenge faced in the case of autonomous vehicles. In such environments, map-matching-based localization can result in an incorrect vehicle pose because the High-Definition map (HD map) and the sensor measurements from the real environments are different. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes robust localization in map-changing environments based on a hierarchical approach of sliding window optimization and filtering. The changing environments are explicitly modeled by a sub-map from the sliding-window-based graph optimization, and the generated sub-map is used for the map matching of the real-time filter. Since the optimized sub-map includes sensor measurement from both the changed and unchanged regions, it reduces the proportion of the changed region in the total matching region, thereby increasing the robustness of the map matching. The proposed hierarchical localization algorithm is verified and evaluated via simulation and experiments. The results show that the proposed algorithm provides a robust vehicle pose in map-changing environments.

2017 Monocular vision-based human following on miniature robotic blimp
abstract
We present an approach that allows the Georgia Tech Miniature Autonomous Blimp (GT-MAB) to detect and follow a human. This accomplishment is the first Human Robot Interaction (HRI) demonstration between an uninstrumented human and a robotic blimp. GT-MAB is an ideal platform for HRI missions because it is safe to humans and can support sufficient flight time for HRI experiments. However, due to complex aerodynamic influence on the blimp, the human following task for GT-MAB with a single on-board camera is a challenging problem. We integrate Haar face detector and KLT feature tracker to achieve robust human tracking. After a human face is detected in the real-time video stream, we estimated the 3D positions of the human with respect to GT-MAB. Visionbased PID controllers are designed based on estimated relative position and the motion primitives of GT-MAB such that it can achieve stable and continuous human following behavior. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the human following capability on GT-MAB.

2015 Scalability issues in optimal assignment for carpooling
abstract
Carpooling for commuting can save cost and helps in reducing pollution. An automatic Web based Global CarPooling Matching Service (GCPMS) for matching commuting trips has been designed. The service supports carpooling candidates by supplying advice during their exploration for potential partners. Such services collect data about the candidates, and base their advice for each pair of trips to be combined, on an estimate of the probability for successful negotiation between the candidates to carpool. The probability values are calculated by a learning mechanism using, on one hand, the registered person and trip characteristics, and on the other hand, the negotiation feedback. The problem of maximizing the expected value of carpooling negotiation success was formulated and was proved to be NP-hard. In addition, the network characteristics for a realistic case have been analyzed. The carpooling network was established using results predicted by the operational FEATHERS activity based model for Flanders (Belgium).
