2022 Detecting Privacy-Sensitive Code Changes with Language Modeling
abstract
At Meta, we work to incorporate privacy-by-design into all of our products and keep user information secure. We have created an ML model that detects code changes ("diffs") that have privacy-sensitive implications. At our scale of tens of thousands of engineers creating hundreds of thousands of diffs each month, we use automated tools for detecting such diffs. Inspired by recent studies on detecting defects [2, 3, 5] and security vulnerabilities [4, 6, 7], we use techniques from natural language processing to build a deep learning system for detecting privacy-sensitive code.

2018 Approximation Algorithms for Scheduling with Resource and Precedence Constraints
abstract
We study non-preemptive scheduling problems on identical parallel machines and uniformly related machines under both resource constraints and general precedence constraints between jobs. Our first result is an O(logn)-approximation algorithm for the objective of minimizing the makespan on parallel identical machines under resource and general precedence constraints. We then use this result as a subroutine to obtain an O(logn)-approximation algorithm for the more general objective of minimizing the total weighted completion time on parallel identical machines under both constraints. Finally, we present an O(logm logn)-approximation algorithm for scheduling under these constraints on uniformly related machines. We show that these results can all be generalized to include the case where each job has a release time. This is the first upper bound on the approximability of this class of scheduling problems where both resource and general precedence constraints must be satisfied simultaneously.

2016 Constant Approximation for Capacitated k-Median with (1+epsilon)-Capacity Violation
abstract
We study the Capacitated k-Median problem for which existing constant-factor approximation algorithms are all pseudo-approximations that violate either the capacities or the upper bound k on the number of open facilities. Using the natural LP relaxation for the problem, one can only hope to get the violation factor down to 2. Li [SODA'16] introduced a novel LP to go beyond the limit of 2 and gave a constant-factor approximation algorithm that opens (1 + epsilon)*k facilities. We use the configuration LP of Li [SODA'16] to give a constant-factor approximation for the Capacitated k-Median problem in a seemingly harder configuration: we violate only the capacities by 1 + epsilon. This result settles the problem as far as pseudo-approximation algorithms are concerned.
