2026 Count Every Rotation and Every Rotation Counts: Exploring Drone Dynamics via Propeller Sensing
abstract
As drone-based applications proliferate, paramount contactless sensing of airborne drones from the ground becomes indispensable. This work demonstrates concentrating on propeller rotational speed will substantially improve drone sensing performance and proposes an event-camera-based solution, EventPro. EventPro features two components: Count Every Rotation achieves accurate, real-time propeller speed estimation by mitigating ultra-high sensitivity of event cameras to environmental noise. Every Rotation Counts leverages these speeds to infer both internal and external drone dynamics. Extensive evaluations in real-world drone delivery scenarios show that EventPro achieves a sensing latency of 3 ms and a rotational speed estimation error of merely 0.23%. Additionally, EventPro infers drone flight commands with 96.5% precision and improves drone tracking accuracy by over 22% when combined with other sensing modalities. 2026 SandWorm: Event-Based Visuotactile Perception With Active Vibration for Screw-Actuated Robot in Granular Media
abstract
Perception in granular media remains challenging due to unpredictable particle dynamics. To address this challenge, we present SandWorm, a biomimetic screw-actuated robot augmented by peristaltic motion to enhance locomotion, and SWTac, a novel event-based visuotactile sensor with an actively vibrated elastomer. The event camera is mechanically decoupled from vibrations by a spring isolation mechanism, enabling high quality tactile imaging of both dynamic and stationary objects. For algorithm design, we propose an IMU-guided temporal filter to enhance imaging consistency, improving MSNR by 24%. Moreover, we systematically optimize SWTac with vibration parameters, event camera settings and elastomer properties. Motivated by asymmetric edge features, we also implement contact surface estimation by U-Net. Experimental validation demonstrates SWTac's 0.2 mm texture resolution, 98% stone classification accuracy, and 0.15 N force estimation error, while SandWorm demonstrates versatile locomotion (up to 12.5 mm/s) in challenging terrains, successfully executes pipeline dredging and subsurface exploration in complex granular media (observed 90%success rate). Field experiments further confirm the system's practical performance.

2025 Demo: HawkEye: Practical In-Flight Obstacle Avoidance with Event Camera and LiDAR Fusion
abstract
Drones are increasingly used in applications such as last-mile delivery and infrastructure inspection, but their safe operation, especially in high-speed scenarios, remains a critical challenge. Existing vision- and LiDAR-based obstacle localization methods suffer from motion blur, latency, and low spatio-temporal resolution, making them inadequate for detecting and tracking fast-moving objects. In this work, we present HawkEye, a drone obstacle avoidance system that fuses event cameras and LiDAR to achieve high-frequency, accurate 3D tracking of dynamic objects. By leveraging the complementary strengths of both sensors, Hawkeye enables robust real-time sensing and safe evasive maneuvers, addressing a key requirement for the large-scale deployment of autonomous drones. 2025 Poster: Skyshield: Event-Driven Submillimeter Thin Obstacle Detection for Drone Flight Safety
abstract
Drones operating in complex environments face a significant threat from thin obstacles, such as steel wires and kite strings at the submillimeter level, which are notoriously difficult for conventional sensors like RGB cameras, LiDAR, and depth cameras to detect. This paper introduces SkyShield, an event-driven, end-to-end framework designed for the perception of submillimeter scale obstacles. Drawing upon the unique features that thin obstacles present in the event stream, our method employs a lightweight U-Net architecture and an innovative Dice-Contour Regularization Loss to ensure precise detection. Experimental results demonstrate that our event-based approach achieves mean F1 Score of 0.7088 with a low latency of 21.2 ms, making it ideal for deployment on edge and mobile platforms.

2024 Machine Learning Based Design of Magnetic Coupler for Wireless Power Transfer
abstract
This paper presents a magnetic coupler design method for wireless power transfer (WPT) systems, which is based on machine-learning algorithms. A synthetic dataset generated by ANSYS-Maxwell is used for training and evaluating machine-learning models. The trained model can obtain the optimal values of the coil inner radius Riand number of turns N, when other coil design parameters such as the coil outer radius Ro, the wire diameter Rw, and the coil inductance L, are given based on the application environment. The proposed method provides a practical solution to design of magnetic couplers with ferrite cores and also accelerates the design compared with conventional methods.
