| 2025 | OARecon: Object-Aware Viewpoint Augmentation for Indoor Compositional ReconstructionabstractReal-world scenes likely involve repetitive objects indicating that the reconstruction of the target object can be supplemented by the views of other identical objects. However, traditional 3D reconstruction methods do not take this a priori knowledge into account and fail to make full use of the available information. In this paper, we propose an object-aware viewpoint augmentation scheme for indoor compositional reconstruction. Within this scheme, a viewpoint supplementation strategy based on signed distance function and neural radiance fields is proposed to fully leverage the information from repetitive objects such that the occlusion problem is suppressed. Moreover, this scheme introduces monocular uncertainty priors and regional smoothness constraints to enhance the reconstruction accuracy of slender and thin structures and the smoothness of occluded background, respectively. Experimental results considering both synthetic and real-world scenes demonstrate that our method effectively improves the reconstruction quality of repetitive objects and background. | 2025 | Gaussian-LIC: Real-Time Photo-Realistic SLAM with Gaussian Splatting and LiDAR-Inertial-Camera FusionabstractIn this paper, we present a real-time photo-realistic SLAM method based on marrying Gaussian Splatting with LiDAR-Inertial-Camera SLAM. Most existing radiance-field-based SLAM systems mainly focus on bounded indoor environments, equipped with RGB-D or RGB sensors. However, they are prone to decline when expanding to unbounded scenes or encountering adverse conditions, such as violent motions and changing illumination. In contrast, oriented to general scenarios, our approach additionally tightly fuses LiDAR, IMU, and camera for robust pose estimation and photo-realistic online mapping. To compensate for regions unobserved by the LiDAR, we propose to integrate both the triangulated visual points from images and LiDAR points for initializing 3D Gaussians. In addition, the modeling of the sky and varying camera exposure have been realized for high-quality rendering. Notably, we implement our system purely with C++ and CUDA, and meticulously design a series of strategies to accelerate the online optimization of the Gaussian-based scene representation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms its counterparts while maintaining real-time capability. Impressively, regarding photo-realistic mapping, our method with our estimated poses even surpasses all the compared approaches that utilize privileged ground-truth poses for mapping. Our code will be released on project page https://xingxingzuo.github.io/gaussian_lic. | 2025 | Hash-GS: Anchor-Based 3D Gaussian Splatting with Multi-Resolution Hash Encoding for Efficient Scene ReconstructionabstractRealistic 3D object and scene reconstruction is pivotal in advancing fields such as world model simulation and embodied intelligence. In this paper, we introduce Hash-GS, a storage-efficient method for large-scale scene reconstruction using anchor-based 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS). The vanilla 3DGS struggles with high memory demands due to the large number of primitives, especially in complex or extensive scenes. Hash-GS addresses these challenges with a compact representation by leveraging high-dimensional features to parameterize primitive properties, stored in compact hash tables, which reduces memory usage while preserving rendering quality. It also incorporates adaptive anchor management to efficiently control the number of anchors and neural Gaussians. Additionally, we introduce an analytic 3D smoothing filter to mitigate aliasing and support Level-of-Detail for optimized rendering across varying intrinsic parameters. Experimental results on several datasets demonstrate that Hash-GS improves storage efficiency while maintaining competitive rendering performance, especially in large-scale scenes. | 2025 | L2Calib: SE (3)-Manifold Reinforcement Learning for Robust Extrinsic Calibration with Degenerate Motion ResilienceabstractExtrinsic calibration is essential for multi-sensor fusion, existing methods rely on structured targets or fully-excited data, limiting real-world applicability. Online calibration further suffers from weak excitation, leading to unreliable estimates. To address these limitations, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL)-based extrinsic calibration framework that formulates extrinsic calibration as a decisionmaking problem, directly optimizes SE(3) extrinsics to enhance odometry accuracy. Our approach leverages a probabilistic Bingham distribution to model 3D rotations, ensuring stable optimization while inherently retaining quaternion symmetry. A trajectory alignment reward mechanism enables robust calibration without structured targets by quantitatively evaluating estimated tightly-coupled trajectory against a reference trajectory. Additionally, an automated data selection module filters uninformative samples, significantly improving efficiency and scalability for large-scale datasets. Extensive experiments on UAVs, UGVs, and handheld platforms demonstrate that our method outperforms traditional optimization-based approaches, achieving high-precision calibration even under weak excitation conditions. Our framework simplifies deployment on diverse robotic platforms by eliminating the need for high-quality initial extrinsics and enabling calibration from routine operating data. | 2025 | CogDDN: A Cognitive Demand-Driven Navigation with Decision Optimization and Dual-Process ThinkingabstractMobile robots are increasingly required to navigate and interact within unknown and unstructured environments to meet human demands. Demand-driven navigation (DDN) enables robots to identify and locate objects based on implicit human intent, even when object locations are unknown. However, traditional data-driven DDN methods rely on pre-collected data for model training and decision-making, limiting their generalization capability in unseen scenarios. In this paper, we propose CogDDN, a VLM-based framework that emulates the human cognitive and learning mechanisms by integrating fast and slow thinking systems and selectively identifying key objects essential to fulfilling user demands. CogDDN identifies appropriate target objects by semantically aligning detected objects with the given instructions. Furthermore, it incorporates a dual-process decision-making module, comprising a Heuristic Process for rapid, efficient decisions and an Analytic Process that analyzes past errors, accumulates them in a knowledge base, and continuously improves performance. Chain of Thought (CoT) reasoning strengthens the decision-making process. Extensive closed-loop evaluations on the AI2Thor simulator with the ProcThor dataset show that CogDDN outperforms single-view camera-only methods by 15%, demonstrating significant improvements in navigation accuracy and adaptability. | 2024 | Monocular Event-Inertial Odometry with Adaptive decay-based Time Surface and Polarity-aware TrackingabstractEvent cameras have garnered considerable attention due to their advantages over traditional cameras in low power consumption, high dynamic range, and no motion blur. This paper proposes a monocular event-inertial odometry incorporating an adaptive decay kernel-based time surface with polarity-aware tracking. We utilize an adaptive decay-based Time Surface to extract texture information from asynchronous events, which adapts to the dynamic characteristics of the event stream and enhances the representation of environmental textures. However, polarity-weighted time surfaces suffer from event polarity shifts during changes in motion direction. To mitigate its adverse effects on feature tracking, we optimize the feature tracking by incorporating an additional polarityinverted time surface to enhance the robustness. Comparative analysis with visual-inertial and event-inertial odometry methods shows that our approach outperforms state-of-the-art techniques, with competitive results across various datasets. | 2023 | LiDAR-Inertial SLAM with Efficiently Extracted PlanesabstractThis paper proposes a LiDAR-Inertial SLAM with efficiently extracted planes, which couples explicit planes in the odometry to improve accuracy and in the mapping for consistency. The proposed method consists of three parts: an efficient Point$\boldsymbol{\rightarrow\text{Line}\rightarrow \text{Plane}}$extraction algorithm, a LiDAR-Inertial-Plane tightly coupled odometry, and a global plane-aided mapping. Specifically, we leverage the ring field of the LiDAR point cloud to accelerate the region-growing-based plane extraction algorithm. Then we tightly coupled IMU pre-integration factors, LiDAR odometry factors, and explicit plane factors in the sliding window to obtain a more accurate initial pose for mapping. Finally, we maintain explicit planes in the global map, and enhance system consistency by optimizing the factor graph of optimized odometry factors and plane observation factors. Experimental results show that our plane extraction method is efficient, and the proposed plane-aided LiDAR-Inertial SLAM significantly improves the accuracy and consistency compared to the other state-of-the-art algorithms with only a small increase in time consumption. | 2022 | Observability-Aware Intrinsic and Extrinsic Calibration of LiDAR-IMU SystemsabstractAccurate and reliable sensor calibration is essential to fuse LiDAR and inertial measurements, which are usually available in robotic applications. In this article, we propose a novel LiDAR-IMU calibration method within the continuous-time batch-optimization framework, where the intrinsics of both sensors and the spatial-temporal extrinsics between sensors are calibrated without using calibration infrastructure, such as fiducial tags. Compared to discrete-time approaches, the continuous-time formulation has natural advantages for fusing high-rate measurements from LiDAR and IMU sensors. To improve efficiency and address degenerate motions, the following two observability-aware modules are leveraged: first, The information-theoretic data selection policy selectsonlythe most informative segments for calibration during data collection, which significantly improves the calibration efficiency by processing only the selected informative segments. Second, the observability-aware state update mechanism in nonlinear least-squares optimization updatesonlythe identifiable directions in the state space with truncated singular value decomposition, which enables accurate calibration results even under degenerate cases where informative data segments are not available. The proposed LiDAR-IMU calibration approach has been validated extensively in both simulated and real-world experiments with different robot platforms, demonstrating its high accuracy and repeatability in commonly-seen human-made environments. | 2021 | CLINS: Continuous-Time Trajectory Estimation for LiDAR-Inertial SystemabstractIn this paper, we propose a highly accurate continuous-time trajectory estimation framework dedicated to SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) applications, which enables fuse high-frequency and asynchronous sensor data effectively. We apply the proposed framework in a 3D LiDAR-inertial system for evaluations. The proposed method adopts a non-rigid registration method for continuous-time trajectory estimation and simultaneously removing the motion distortion in LiDAR scans. Additionally, we propose a two-state continuous-time trajectory correction method to efficiently and efficiently tackle the computationally-intractable global optimization problem when loop closure happens. We examine the accuracy of the proposed approach on several publicly available datasets and the data we collected. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the discrete-time methods regarding accuracy especially when aggressive motion occurs. | 2020 | Targetless Calibration of LiDAR-IMU System Based on Continuous-time Batch EstimationabstractSensor calibration is the fundamental block for a multi-sensor fusion system. This paper presents an accurate and repeatable LiDAR-IMU calibration method (termed LI-Calib), to calibrate the 6-DOF extrinsic transformation between the 3D LiDAR and the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Regarding the high data capture rate for LiDAR and IMU sensors, LI-Calib adopts a continuous-time trajectory formulation based on B-Spline, which is more suitable for fusing high-rate or asynchronous measurements than discrete-time based approaches. Additionally, LI-Calib decomposes the space into cells and identifies the planar segments for data association, which renders the calibration problem well-constrained in usual scenarios without any artificial targets. We validate the proposed calibration approach on both simulated and real-world experiments. The results demonstrate the high accuracy and good repeatability of the proposed method in common human-made scenarios. | 2020 | LIC-Fusion 2.0: LiDAR-Inertial-Camera Odometry with Sliding-Window Plane-Feature TrackingabstractMulti-sensor fusion of multi-modal measurements from commodity inertial, visual and LiDAR sensors to provide robust and accurate 6DOF pose estimation holds great potential in robotics and beyond. In this paper, building upon our prior work (i.e., LIC-Fusion), we develop a sliding-window filter based LiDAR-Inertial-Camera odometry with online spatiotemporal calibration (i.e., LIC-Fusion 2.0), which introduces a novel sliding-window plane-feature tracking for efficiently processing 3D LiDAR point clouds. In particular, after motion compensation for LiDAR points by leveraging IMU data, low-curvature planar points are extracted and tracked across the sliding window. A novel outlier rejection criteria is proposed in the plane-feature tracking for high quality data association. Only the tracked planar points belonging to the same plane will be used for plane initialization, which makes the plane extraction efficient and robust. Moreover, we perform the observability analysis for the IMU-LiDAR subsystem under consideration and report the degenerate cases for spatiotemporal calibration using plane features. While the estimation consistency and identified degenerate motions are validated in Monte-Carlo simulations, different real-world experiments are also conducted to show that the proposed LIC-Fusion 2.0 outperforms its predecessor and other state-of-the-art methods. | 2012 | Semi-supervised Mesh Segmentation and LabelingabstractAbstract Recently, approaches have been put forward that focus on the recognition of mesh semantic meanings. These methods usually need prior knowledge learned from training dataset, but when the size of the training dataset is small, or the meshes are too complex, the segmentation performance will be greatly effected. This paper introduces an approach to the semantic mesh segmentation and labeling which incorporates knowledge imparted by both segmented, labeled meshes, and unsegmented, unlabeled meshes. A Conditional Random Fields (CRF) based objective function measuring the consistency of labels and faces, labels of neighbouring faces is proposed. To implant the information from the unlabeled meshes, we add an unlabeled conditional entropy into the objective function. With the entropy, the objective function is not convex and hard to optimize, so we modify the Virtual Evidence Boosting (VEB) to solve the semi‐supervised problem efficiently. Our approach yields better results than those methods which only use limited labeled meshes, especially when many unlabeled meshes exist. The approach reduces the overall system cost as well as the human labelling cost required during training. We also show that combining knowledge from labeled and unlabeled meshes outperforms using either type of meshes alone. Jiajun Lv, Xinlei Chen, Jin Huang 0001, Hujun Bao |
