2025 A 3D Design Methodology for Integrated Wearable SoCs: Enabling Energy Efficiency and Enhanced Performance at Iso-Area Footprint
abstract
Augmented Reality (AR) System-on-Chips (SoCs) have strict power budgets and form-factor limitations for wearable, all-day use AR glasses running high-performance applications. Limited compute and memory resources that can fit within the strict industrial design area footprint of an AR SoC, however, create performance bottlenecks for demanding workloads such as Pixel Codec Avatars (PiCA) group-calling which connects multiple users with their photorealistic representations. To alleviate this unique wearables challenge, 3D integration with hybrid-bonding technology offers energy-efficient 3D stacking of more silicon resources within the same SoC footprint. Implementing such 3D architectures, however, is another challenge as current EDA tools and flows offer limited 3D design control. In this work, we present a 3D design methodology for robust 3D clock network and datapath design using current EDA tools. To validate the proposed methodology, we implemented a 3D integrated prototype AR SoC housing a 3D-stacked Machine Learning (ML) accelerator utilizing TSMC SoIC™bonding technology. Silicon measurements demonstrate that the 3D ML accelerator enables running PiCA AR group call at 30 frames-per-second (fps) by 3D-expanding its memory resources by 4× to achieve 2× better energy-efficiency when compared to a 2D baseline accelerator at iso-footprint.

2025 Clients Collaborate: Flexible Differentially Private Federated Learning with Guaranteed Improvement of Utility-Privacy Trade-off
abstract
To defend against privacy leakage of user data, differential privacy is widely used in federated learning, but it is not free. The addition of noise randomly disrupts the semantic integrity of the model and this disturbance accumulates with increased communication rounds. In this paper, we introduce a novel federated learning framework with rigorous privacy guarantees, named FedCEO, designed to strike a trade-off between model utility and user privacy by letting clients "C*ollaborate with Each Other". Specifically, we perform efficient tensor low-rank proximal optimization on stacked local model parameters at the server, demonstrating its capability to flexibly truncate high-frequency components in spectral space. This capability implies that our FedCEO can effectively recover the disrupted semantic information by smoothing the global semantic space for different privacy settings and continuous training processes. Moreover, we improve the SOTA utility-privacy trade-off bound by order of $\sqrt{d}$, where $d$ is the input dimension. We illustrate our theoretical results with experiments on representative datasets and observe significant performance improvements and strict privacy guarantees under different privacy settings. The *code is available at https://github.com/6lyc/FedCEO_Collaborate-with-Each-Other.

2025 Re-CATA: Real-Time and Flexible Accelerator Design Framework for On-Device Codec Avatars
abstract
Real-time Codec Avatars, which employ deep generative models for 3-D reconstruction of human features, are crucial for immersive telepresence in augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) environments. However, deploying these avatars in real-time on AR/VR headsets is challenging due to the inability of existing devices to achieve satisfying performance within stringent hardware resource constraints. To address these challenges, we introduce Re-CATA, an innovative full-stack and flexible Codec Avatar accelerator design framework. Re-CATA is designed to deliver real-time throughput (greater than 120 FPS) for the complete Codec Avatar processing pipeline within an edge-level power budget of 5 W under FPGA prototyping. Our approach begins by abstracting the operation mapping and scheduling challenges inherent in Codec Avatars, which require both centralized and distributed processing to handle dynamically changing workloads. We propose a novel hardware resource and workload partitioning scheme optimized for these fluctuating demands. To complement this, we introduce an agile runtime scheduling system for efficient workload reallocation among computing units as needed, recognizing the limitations of static partitioning in rapidly evolving workload scenarios. Furthermore, our micro-architecture design incorporates unified computing modules and efficient hardware peripherals, enabling seamless workload balancing across the Codec Avatar processing pipeline. We evaluate the Re-CATA accelerators via on-board FPGA prototyping, comparing them to various baselines, including commercial AR/VR system-on-chips and academic accelerators. This evaluation demonstrates a maximum speedup of up to$5.95\times $under similar settings.

2025 A Cross-Client Coordinator in Federated Learning Framework for Conquering Heterogeneity
abstract
Federated learning, as a privacy-preserving learning paradigm, restricts the access to data of each local client, for protecting the privacy of the parties. However, in the case of heterogeneous data settings, the different data distributions among clients usually lead to the divergence of learning targets, which is an essential challenge for federated learning. In this article, we propose a federated learning framework with a unified coding space, called FedUCS, for learning cross-client uniform coding rules to solve the problem of divergent targets among multiple clients due to heterogeneous data. A cross-client coordinator co-trained by multiple clients is used as a criterion of the coding space to supervise all clients coding to a uniform space, which is the significant contribution of this article. Furthermore, in order to appropriately retain historical information and avoid forgetting previous knowledge, a partial memory mechanism is applied. Moreover, in order to further enhance the distinguishability of the unified encoding space, supervised contrastive learning is used to avoid the intersection of the encoding spaces belonging to different categories. A series of experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in a federated learning setting with heterogeneous data.

2024 Contrastive Deep Nonnegative Matrix Factorization For Community Detection
abstract
Recently, nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) has been widely adopted for community detection, because of its better interpretability. However, the existing NMF-based methods have the following three problems: 1) they directly transform the original network into community membership space, so it is difficult for them to capture the hierarchical information; 2) they often only pay attention to the topology of the network and ignore its node attributes; 3) it is hard for them to learn the global structure information necessary for community detection. Therefore, we propose a new community detection algorithm, named Contrastive Deep Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (CDNMF). Firstly, we deepen NMF to strengthen its capacity for information extraction. Subsequently, inspired by contrastive learning, our algorithm creatively constructs network topology and node attributes as two contrasting views. Furthermore, we utilize a debiased negative sampling layer and learn node similarity at the community level, thereby enhancing the suitability of our model for community detection. We conduct experiments on three public real graph datasets and the proposed model has achieved better results than state-of-the-art methods. Code available at https://github.com/6lyc/CDNMF.git.

2023 Auto-CARD: Efficient and Robust Codec Avatar Driving for Real-time Mobile Telepresence
abstract
Real-time and robust photorealistic avatars for telepresence in AR/VR have been highly desired for enabling im-mersive photorealistic telepresence. However, there still exists one key bottleneck: the considerable computational expense needed to accurately infer facial expressions captured from headset-mounted cameras with a quality level that can match the realism of the avatar's human appearance. To this end, we propose a framework called Auto-CARD, which for the first time enables realtime and robust driving of Codec Avatars when exclusively using merely on-device computing resources. This is achieved by minimizing two sources of redundancy. First, we develop a dedicated neural architecture search technique called AVE-NAS for avatar encoding in AR/VR, which explicitly boosts both the searched architectures' robustness in the presence of extreme facial ex-pressions and hardware friendliness on fast evolving AR/VR headsets. Second, we leverage the temporal redundancy in consecutively captured images during continuous rendering and develop a mechanism dubbed LATEX to skip the computation of redundant frames. Specifically, we first identify an opportunity from the linearity of the latent space derived by the avatar decoder and then propose to perform adaptive latent extrapolation for redundant frames. For evaluation, we demonstrate the efficacy of our Auto-CARD framework in realtime Codec Avatar driving settings, where we achieve a$5.05\times$speedup on Meta Quest 2 while maintaining a compa-rable or even better animation quality than state-of-the-art avatar encoder designs.

2023 CLR: Channel-wise Lightweight Reprogramming for Continual Learning
abstract
Continual learning aims to emulate the human ability to continually accumulate knowledge over sequential tasks. The main challenge is to maintain performance on previously learned tasks after learning new tasks, i.e., to avoid catastrophic forgetting. We propose a Channel-wise Lightweight Reprogramming (CLR) approach that helps convolutional neural networks (CNNs) overcome catastrophic forgetting during continual learning. We show that a CNN model trained on an old task (or self-supervised proxy task) could be "reprogrammed" to solve a new task by using our proposed lightweight (very cheap) reprogramming parameter. With the help of CLR, we have a better stability-plasticity trade-off to solve continual learning problems: To maintain stability and retain previous task ability, we use a common task-agnostic immutable part as the shared "anchor" parameter set. We then add task-specific lightweight reprogramming parameters to reinterpret the outputs of the immutable parts, to enable plasticity and integrate new knowledge. To learn sequential tasks, we only train the lightweight reprogramming parameters to learn each new task. Reprogramming parameters are task-specific and exclusive to each task, which makes our method immune to catastrophic forgetting. To minimize the parameter requirement of reprogramming to learn new tasks, we make reprogramming lightweight by only adjusting essential kernels and learning channel-wise linear mappings from anchor parameters to task-specific domain knowledge. We show that, for general CNNs, the CLR parameter increase is less than 0.6% for any new task. Our method outperforms 13 state-of-the-art continual learning baselines on a new challenging sequence of 53 image classification datasets. Code and data are in the top link.

2021 F-CAD: A Framework to Explore Hardware Accelerators for Codec Avatar Decoding
abstract
Creating virtual avatars with realistic rendering is one of the most essential and challenging tasks to provide highly immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences. It requires not only sophisticated deep neural network (DNN) based codec avatar decoders to ensure high visual quality and precise motion expression, but also efficient hardware accelerators to guarantee smooth real-time rendering using lightweight edge devices, like untethered VR headsets. Existing hardware accelerators, however, fail to deliver sufficient performance and efficiency targeting such decoders which consist of multi-branch DNNs and require demanding compute and memory resources. To address these problems, we propose an automation framework, called F-CAD (Facebook Codec avatar Accelerator Design), to explore and deliver optimized hardware accelerators for codec avatar decoding. Novel technologies include 1) a new accelerator architecture to efficiently handle multi-branch DNNs; 2) a multi-branch dynamic design space to enable fine-grained architecture configurations; and 3) an efficient architecture search for picking the optimized hardware design based on both application-specific demands and hardware resource constraints. To the best of our knowledge, F-CAD is the first automation tool that supports the whole design flow of hardware acceleration of codec avatar decoders, allowing joint optimization on decoder designs in popular machine learning frameworks and corresponding customized accelerator design with cycle-accurate evaluation. Results show that the accelerators generated by F-CAD can deliver up to 122.1 frames per second (FPS) and 91.6% hardware efficiency when running the latest codec avatar decoder. Compared to the state-of-the-art designs, F-CAD achieves 4.0× and 2.8× higher throughput, 62.5% and 21.2% higher efficiency than DNNBuilder [1] and HybridDNN [2] by targeting the same hardware device.

2014 eButton: A Wearable Computer for Health Monitoring and Personal Assistance
abstract
Recent advances in mobile devices have made profound changes in people's daily lives. In particular, the impact of easy access of information by the smartphone has been tremendous. However, the impact of mobile devices on healthcare has been limited. Diagnosis and treatment of diseases are still initiated by occurrences of symptoms, and technologies and devices that emphasize on disease prevention and early detection outside hospitals are under-developed. Besides healthcare, mobile devices have not yet been designed to fully benefit people with special needs, such as the elderly and those suffering from certain disabilities, such blindness. In this paper, an overview of our research on a new wearable computer called eButton is presented. The concepts of its design and electronic implementation are described. Several applications of the eButton are described, including evaluating diet and physical activity, studying sedentary behavior, assisting the blind and visually impaired people, and monitoring older adults suffering from dementia.

2012 Modified Clipped Histogram Equalization for Contrast Enhancement
abstract
Histogram equalization (HE) based methodologies are popular and effective ways to improve image contrast and visual quality, but standard HE is not directly applied on consumer electronics. This paper proposes a modified Clipped Histogram Equalization (CHE) for contrast enhancement based on the fundamental of histogram modification. It improves the visual quality by enhancing details both in dark and bright regions through automatically detecting the dynamic range of the image. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art HE based algorithms in improving contrast and giving a visually-pleasing result while avoiding over-enhancement and noise amplification. Its high efficiency makes the proposed method practical for applications on consumer electronic.
