| 2019 | GP-GAN: Towards Realistic High-Resolution Image BlendingabstractIt is common but challenging to address high-resolution image blending in the automatic photo editing application. In this paper, we would like to focus on solving the problem of high-resolution image blending, where the composite images are provided. We propose a framework called Gaussian-Poisson Generative Adversarial Network (GP-GAN) to leverage the strengths of the classical gradient-based approach and Generative Adversarial Networks. To the best of our knowledge, it's the first work that explores the capability of GANs in high-resolution image blending task. Concretely, we propose Gaussian-Poisson Equation to formulate the high-resolution image blending problem, which is a joint optimization constrained by the gradient and color information. Inspired by the prior works, we obtain gradient information via applying gradient filters. To generate the color information, we propose a Blending GAN to learn the mapping between the composite images and the well-blended ones. Compared to the alternative methods, our approach can deliver high-resolution, realistic images with fewer bleedings and unpleasant artifacts. Experiments confirm that our approach achieves the state-of-the-art performance on Transient Attributes dataset. A user study on Amazon Mechanical Turk finds that the majority of workers are in favor of the proposed method. The source code is available in \urlhttps://github.com/wuhuikai/GP-GAN, and there's also an online demo in \urlhttp://wuhuikai.me/DeepJS. Huikai Wu, Shuai Zheng 0001, Junge Zhang, Kaiqi Huang |

| 2018 | Fast End-to-End Trainable Guided FilterabstractImage processing and pixel-wise dense prediction have been advanced by harnessing the capabilities of deep learning. One central issue of deep learning is the limited capacity to handle joint upsampling. We present a deep learning building block for joint upsampling, namely guided filtering layer. This layer aims at efficiently generating the high-resolution output given the corresponding low-resolution one and a high-resolution guidance map. The proposed layer is composed of a guided filter, which is reformulated as a fully differentiable block. To this end, we show that a guided filter can be expressed as a group of spatial varying linear transformation matrices. This layer could be integrated with the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and jointly optimized through end-to-end training. To further take advantage of end-to-end training, we plug in a trainable transformation function that generates task-specific guidance maps. By integrating the CNNs and the proposed layer, we form deep guided filtering networks. The proposed networks are evaluated on five advanced image processing tasks. Experiments on MIT-Adobe FiveK Dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach runs 10-100× faster and achieves the state-of-the-art performance. We also show that the proposed guided filtering layer helps to improve the performance of multiple pixel-wise dense prediction tasks. | 2018 | Revisiting Deep Structured Models for Pixel-Level Labeling with Gradient-Based InferenceabstractSemantic segmentation and other pixel-level labeling tasks have made significant progress recently due to the deep learning paradigm. Many state-of-the-art structured prediction methods also include a random field model with a hand-crafted Gaussian potential to model spatial priors and label consistencies and feature-based image conditioning. These random field models with image conditioning typically require computationally demanding filtering techniques during inference. In this paper, we present a new inference and learning framework which can learn arbitrary pairwise conditional random field (CRF) potentials. Both standard spatial and high-dimensional bilateral kernels are considered. In addition, we introduce a new type of potential function which is image-dependent like the bilateral kernel, but an order of magnitude faster to compute since only spatial convolutions are employed. It is empirically demonstrated that such learned potentials can improve segmentation accuracy and that certain label-class interactions are indeed better modeled by a non-Gaussian potential. Our framework is evaluated on several public benchmarks for semantic segmentation with improved performance compared to previous state-of-the-art CNN+CRF models. | 2015 | Conditional Random Fields as Recurrent Neural NetworksabstractPixel-level labelling tasks, such as semantic segmentation, play a central role in image understanding. Recent approaches have attempted to harness the capabilities of deep learning techniques for image recognition to tackle pixel-level labelling tasks. One central issue in this methodology is the limited capacity of deep learning techniques to delineate visual objects. To solve this problem, we introduce a new form of convolutional neural network that combines the strengths of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Conditional Random Fields (CRFs)-based probabilistic graphical modelling. To this end, we formulate Conditional Random Fields with Gaussian pairwise potentials and mean-field approximate inference as Recurrent Neural Networks. This network, called CRF-RNN, is then plugged in as a part of a CNN to obtain a deep network that has desirable properties of both CNNs and CRFs. Importantly, our system fully integrates CRF modelling with CNNs, making it possible to train the whole deep network end-to-end with the usual back-propagation algorithm, avoiding offline post-processing methods for object delineation. We apply the proposed method to the problem of semantic image segmentation, obtaining top results on the challenging Pascal VOC 2012 segmentation benchmark. | 2015 | DenseCut: Densely Connected CRFs for Realtime GrabCutabstractFigure-ground segmentation from bounding box input, provided either automatically or manually, has been extremely popular in the last decade and influenced various applications. A lot of research has focused on high-quality segmentation, using complex formulations which often lead to slow techniques, and often hamper practical usage. In this paper we demonstrate a very fast segmentation technique which still achieves very high quality results. We propose to replace the time consuming iterative refinement of global colour models in traditional GrabCut formulation by a densely connected crf. To motivate this decision, we show that a dense crf implicitly models unnormalized global colour models for foreground and background. Such relationship provides insightful analysis to bridge between dense crf and GrabCut functional. We extensively evaluate our algorithm using two famous benchmarks. Our experimental results demonstrated that the proposed algorithm achieves an order of magnitude (10×) speed-up with respect to the closest competitor, and at the same time achieves a considerably higher accuracy. | 2014 | Dense Semantic Image Segmentation with Objects and AttributesabstractThe concepts of objects and attributes are both important for describing images precisely, since verbal descriptions often contain both adjectives and nouns (e.g. 'I see a shiny red chair'). In this paper, we formulate the problem of joint visual attribute and object class image segmentation as a dense multi-labelling problem, where each pixel in an image can be associated with both an object-class and a set of visual attributes labels. In order to learn the label correlations, we adopt a boosting-based piecewise training approach with respect to the visual appearance and co-occurrence cues. We use a filtering-based mean-field approximation approach for efficient joint inference. Further, we develop a hierarchical model to incorporate region-level object and attribute information. Experiments on the aPASCAL, CORE and attribute augmented NYU indoor scenes datasets show that the proposed approach is able to achieve state-of-the-art results. | 2014 | ImageSpirit: Verbal Guided Image ParsingabstractHumans describe images in terms of nouns and adjectives while algorithms operate on images represented as sets of pixels. Bridging this gap between how humans would like to access images versus their typical representation is the goal of image parsing, which involves assigning object and attribute labels to pixels. In this article we propose treating nouns as object labels and adjectives as visual attribute labels. This allows us to formulate the image parsing problem as one of jointly estimating per-pixel object and attribute labels from a set of training images. We propose an efficient (interactive time) solution. Using the extracted labels as handles, our system empowers a user to verbally refine the results. This enables hands-free parsing of an image into pixel-wise object/attribute labels that correspond to human semantics. Verbally selecting objects of interest enables a novel and natural interaction modality that can possibly be used to interact with new generation devices (e.g., smartphones, Google Glass, livingroom devices). We demonstrate our system on a large number of real-world images with varying complexity. To help understand the trade-offs compared to traditional mouse-based interactions, results are reported for both a large-scale quantitative evaluation and a user study. | 2013 | Efficient Salient Region Detection with Soft Image AbstractionabstractDetecting visually salient regions in images is one of the fundamental problems in computer vision. We propose a novel method to decompose an image into large scale perceptually homogeneous elements for efficient salient region detection, using a soft image abstraction representation. By considering both appearance similarity and spatial distribution of image pixels, the proposed representation abstracts out unnecessary image details, allowing the assignment of comparable saliency values across similar regions, and producing perceptually accurate salient region detection. We evaluate our salient region detection approach on the largest publicly available dataset with pixel accurate annotations. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms 18 alternate methods, reducing the mean absolute error by 25.2% compared to the previous best result, while being computationally more efficient. | 2013 | Robust Non-parametric Data Fitting for Correspondence ModelingabstractWe propose a generic method for obtaining nonparametric image warps from noisy point correspondences. Our formulation integrates a huber function into a motion coherence framework. This makes our fitting function especially robust to piecewise correspondence noise (where an image section is consistently mismatched). By utilizing over parameterized curves, we can generate realistic nonparametric image warps from very noisy correspondence. We also demonstrate how our algorithm can be used to help stitch images taken from a panning camera by warping the images onto a virtual push-broom camera imaging plane. | 2011 | Evaluation framework on translation-invariant representation for cumulative foot pressure imageabstractGround reaction force can be used to distinguish different human gait like limb movement. Cumulative foot pressure image is a 2-D data that recorded the spatial and temporal change of ground reaction force during one gait cycle. However, when putting it into practice as a new biometric for gait recognition, it suffers from the problem of large translation variation within class caused by wearing different shoes and walking in different speed. In this paper, an evaluation framework is proposed to address the problem. The framework consists of a database containing cumulative foot pressure images and a well designed benchmark. The data are collected from 118 subjects. A locality-constrained sparse coding scheme is developed to be compared with the benchmark PCA approach. Experimental results show the potential of evaluation framework for evaluating the translation-invariant power of image representation algorithms. Shuai Zheng 0001, Kaiqi Huang, Tieniu Tan |

| 2011 | Robust view transformation model for gait recognitionabstractRecent gait recognition systems often suffer from the challenges including viewing angle variation and large intra-class variations. In order to address these challenges, this paper presents a robust View Transformation Model for gait recognition. Based on the gait energy image, the proposed method establishes a robust view transformation model via robust principal component analysis. Partial least square is used as feature selection method. Compared with the existing methods, the proposed method finds out a shared linear correlated low rank subspace, which brings the advantages that the view transformation model is robust to viewing angle variation, clothing and carrying condition changes. Conducted on the CASIA gait dataset, experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the other existing methods. Shuai Zheng 0001, Junge Zhang, Kaiqi Huang, Ran He 0001, Tieniu Tan |
