2024 ReCLIP: Refine Contrastive Language Image Pre-Training with Source Free Domain Adaptation
abstract
Large-scale pre-trained vision-language models (VLM) such as CLIP [32] have demonstrated noteworthy zero-shot classification capability, achieving 76.3% top-1 accuracy on ImageNet without seeing any examples. However, while applying CLIP to a downstream target domain, the presence of visual and text domain gaps and cross-modality misalignment can greatly impact the model performance. To address such challenges, we propose ReCLIP, a novel source-free domain adaptation method for VLMs, which does not require any source data or target labeled data. ReCLIP first learns a projection space to mitigate the misaligned visual-text embeddings and learns pseudo labels. Then, it deploys cross-modality self-training with the pseudo labels to update visual and text encoders, refine labels and reduce domain gaps and misalignment iteratively. With extensive experiments, we show that ReCLIP outperforms all the baselines significantly and improves the average accuracy of CLIP from 69.83% to 74.94% on 22 image classification benchmarks.

2023 Multimodal Neural Radiance Field
abstract
This paper addresses the challenge of reconstructing a scene with a neural radiance field (NeRF) for robot vision and scene understanding using multiple modalities. Researchers have introduced the use of NeRF to represent an object for synthesizing and rendering novel views of complex scenes by optimizing a 3-D radiance field for ray casting and rendering for 2-D RGB images. However, using RGB images alone introduces additional geometry ambiguities with transparent objects or complex scenes and cannot accurately depict the 3-D shapes. We discuss and solve this problem and use multiple modalities as input for the same NeRF model to build a multimodal NeRF by incorporating point clouds and infrared image supervision to prevent such bias. In contrast to RGB images, infrared images and point clouds are typically taken by separate cameras that cannot be aligned with the RGB camera. We further introduce the alignment of different modalities based on point cloud registration to estimate the relative transformation matrices between them before training a NeRF model with multiple modalities. We evaluate our model on chosen scenes from the ScanNet and M2DGR datasets and demonstrate that it outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods.

2023 Human-in-the-Loop Video Semantic Segmentation Auto-Annotation
abstract
Accurate per-pixel semantic class annotations of the entire video are crucial for designing and evaluating video semantic segmentation algorithms. However, the annotations are usually limited to a small subset of the video frames due to the high annotation cost and limited budget in practice. In this paper, we propose a novel human-in-the-loop framework called HVSA to generate semantic segmentation annotations for the entire video using only a small annotation budget. Our method alternates between active sample selection and test-time fine-tuning algorithms until annotation quality is satisfied. In particular, the active sample selection algorithm picks the most important samples to get manual annotations, where the sample can be a video frame, a rectangle, or even a super-pixel. Further, the test-time fine-tuning algorithm propagates the manual annotations of selected samples to the entire video. Real-world experiments show that our method generates highly accurate and consistent semantic segmentation annotations while simultaneously enjoys significantly small annotation cost.

2023 CameraPose: Weakly-Supervised Monocular 3D Human Pose Estimation by Leveraging In-the-wild 2D Annotations
abstract
To improve the generalization of 3D human pose estimators, many existing deep learning based models focus on adding different augmentations to training poses. However, data augmentation techniques are limited to the "seen" pose combinations and hard to infer poses with rare "unseen" joint positions. To address this problem, we present CameraPose, a weakly-supervised framework for 3D human pose estimation from a single image, which can not only be applied on 2D-3D pose pairs but also on 2D alone annotations. By adding a camera parameter branch, any in-the-wild 2D annotations can be fed into our pipeline to boost the training diversity and the 3D poses can be implicitly learned by reprojecting back to 2D. Moreover, CameraPose introduces a refinement network module with confidence-guided loss to further improve the quality of noisy 2D keypoints extracted by 2D pose estimators. Experimental results demonstrate that the CameraPose brings in clear improvements on cross-scenario datasets. Notably, it outperforms the baseline method by 3mm on the most challenging dataset 3DPW. In addition, by combining our proposed refinement network module with existing 3D pose estimators, their performance can be improved in cross-scenario evaluation.

2023 De-Noising of Photoacoustic Microscopy Images by Attentive Generative Adversarial Network
abstract
As a hybrid imaging technology, photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) imaging suffers from noise due to the maximum permissible exposure of laser intensity, attenuation of ultrasound in the tissue, and the inherent noise of the transducer. De-noising is an image processing method to reduce noise, and PAM image quality can be recovered. However, previous de-noising techniques usually heavily rely on manually selected parameters, resulting in unsatisfactory and slow de-noising performance for different noisy images, which greatly hinders practical and clinical applications. In this work, we propose a deep learning-based method to remove noise from PAM images without manual selection of settings for different noisy images. An attention enhanced generative adversarial network is used to extract image features and adaptively remove various levels of Gaussian, Poisson, and Rayleigh noise. The proposed method is demonstrated on both synthetic and real datasets, including phantom (leaf veins) and in vivo (mouse ear blood vessels and zebrafish pigment) experiments. In the in vivo experiments using synthetic datasets, our method achieves the improvement of 6.53 dB and 0.26 in peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity metrics, respectively. The results show that compared with previous PAM de-noising methods, our method exhibits good performance in recovering images qualitatively and quantitatively. In addition, the de-noising processing speed of 0.016 s is achieved for an image with 256×256 pixels, which has the potential for real-time applications. Our approach is effective and practical for the de-noising of PAM images.

2020 MEBOW: Monocular Estimation of Body Orientation in the Wild
abstract
Body orientation estimation provides crucial visual cues in many applications, including robotics and autonomous driving. It is particularly desirable when 3-D pose estimation is difficult to infer due to poor image resolution, occlusion or indistinguishable body parts. We present COCO-MEBOW (Monocular Estimation of Body Orientation in the Wild), a new large-scale dataset for orientation estimation from a single in-the-wild image. The body-orientation labels for around 130K human bodies within 55K images from the COCO dataset have been collected using an efficient and high-precision annotation pipeline. We also validated the benefits of the dataset. First, we show that our dataset can substantially improve the performance and the robustness of a human body orientation estimation model, the development of which was previously limited by the scale and diversity of the available training data. Additionally, we present a novel triple-source solution for 3-D human pose estimation, where 3-D pose labels, 2-D pose labels, and our body-orientation labels are all used in joint training. Our model significantly outperforms state-of-the-art dual-source solutions for monocular 3-D human pose estimation, where training only uses 3-D pose labels and 2-D pose labels. This substantiates an important advantage of MEBOW for 3-D human pose estimation, which is particularly appealing because the per-instance labeling cost for body orientations is far less than that for 3-D poses. The work demonstrates high potential of MEBOW in addressing real-world challenges involving understanding human behaviors. 2018 Multimodal Sensor System for Pressure Ulcer Wound Assessment and Care
abstract
We present a multimodal sensor system for wound assessment and pressure ulcer care. Multiple imaging modalities including RGB, three- dimensional (3-D) depth, thermal, multispectral, and chemical sensing are integrated into a portable hand-held probe for real-time wound assessment. Analytic and quantitative algorithms for various assessments including tissue composition, wound measurement in 3-D, temperature profiling, spectral, and chemical vapor analysis are developed. After each assessment scan, 3-D models of the wound are generated on the fly for geometric measurement, while multimodal observations are analyzed to estimate healing progress. Collaboration between developers and clinical practitioners was conducted at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center for in-field data collection and experimental evaluation. A total of 133 assessment sessions from 23 enrolled subjects were collected, on which the multimodal data were analyzed and validated with respect to clinical notes associated with each subject. The system can be operated by nontechnical caregivers on a regular basis to aid wound assessment and care. A web portal front-end was developed for clinical decision and telehealth support, where all historical patient data including wound measurements and analysis can be organized online.

2017 In-bed patient motion and pose analysis using depth videos for pressure ulcer prevention
abstract
We present a real-time depth based computer vision system for pressure ulcer prevention, in-bed patient care and monitoring. Our system can effectively determine whether or not a mobility-compromised patient has been correctly repo-sitioned at the required frequency. A depth sensor is used to detect and recognize patient movements, motion patterns, and pose positions. If the patient has stayed in an unchanged pose for too long and needs pressure releasing movements, our system can notify caregivers for repositioning or assistance. Privacy concerns are mitigated by removing the RGB components of the video stream from the camera capturing, and only processing depth measurements. We collaborated with clinical practitioners at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center for in-field data collection and experimental evaluation. A web portal front-end is developed such that all historical patient movements, pose positions, and repositioning data can be organized to support telehealth applications.

2017 Accelerating Image-Domain-Warping Virtual View Synthesis on GPGPU
abstract
The image-domain-warping (IDW) method can effectively create high-quality virtual views. However, the IDW algorithm is very complex, and the software implementation for this method is far from real-time. In this paper, we propose an IDW-based view synthesis acceleration method on general-purpose computing on a graphics processing unit (GPGPU). Our method makes two main contributions. First, at the algorithm level, we employ FAST for sparse disparity estimation and adopt the successive over-relaxation iterative method to calculate warps. Second, at the platform level, two computation-intensive modules (data extraction and view synthesis) in IDW are offloaded to GPU using efficient data-level parallelism strategies. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed acceleration method can speed up the original IDW algorithm by more than 110x, and HD stereo three-dimensional video can be converted to 8-view 4 K video (each view has an approximate 720P resolution) in real-time on a hybrid CPU + GPU (NVIDIA GTX980) platform.

2016 Distributed object recognition in smart camera networks
abstract
Distributed object recognition is a significantly fast-growing research area, mainly motivated by the emergence of high performance cameras and their integration with modern wireless sensor network technologies. In wireless distributed object recognition, the bandwidth is limited and it is desirable to avoid transmitting redundant visual features from multiple cameras to the base station. In this paper, we propose a histogram compression and feature selection framework based on Sparse Non-negative Matrix Factorization (SNMF). In our proposed method, histograms of the features are modeled as linear combination of a small set of signature vectors with associated weight vectors. The recognition process in the base station is then performed based on these small sets of transmitted weights from each camera. Furthermore, we propose another novel distributed object recognition scheme based on local classification in each camera and sending the label information to the base station and making the final decision based on majority voting. Experiments on BMW dataset affirm that our approach outperforms the state of the art in accuracy and bandwidth usage.

2016 Robust view interpolation with mesh cutting
abstract
Existing view interpolation methods like DIBR require accurate disparity map which greatly limits their applications. To this aim, we propose a novel mesh-based view interpolation algorithm capable of synthesizing visually coherent virtual views with rough disparity map estimated by stereo matching algorithms. We adopt an edge-aware mesh cutting method to explicitly handle occlusion and preserve sharp depth discontinuities. Experiments on Middlebury dataset and 3D-HEVC test sequences demonstrate that proposed method outperforms DIBR and state-of-the-art mesh-based view interpolation algorithm in terms of visual quality and PSNR.

2015 An on-demand data broadcasting scheduling algorithm based on dynamic index strategy
abstract
Abstract On‐demand data broadcasting scheduling is an effective wireless data dissemination technique. Existing scheduling algorithms usually have two problems: (1) with the explosive growth of mobile users and real‐time individual requirements, broadcasting systems present a shortage of scalability, dynamics and timeliness (request drop ratio); (2) with the growth of intelligent and entertained application, energy consumption of mobile client cannot be persistent (tuning time). This paper proposes an effective scheduling algorithm LxRxW. It takes into account the number of lost requests during next item broadcasting time, the number of requests and the waiting time. LxRxW can reduce the request drop ratio. At the same time, the algorithm employs a dynamic index strategy to put forward a dynamic adjusting method on the index cycle length (DAIL) to determine the proper index cycle. Extensive experimental results show that the LxRxW algorithm has better performance than other state‐of‐the‐art scheduling algorithms and can significantly reduce the drop ratio of user requests by 40%–50%. The request drop ratio and accessing time of LxRxW with index increase by 1%–2% than LxRxW algorithm without index, but the tuning time decreases by 70%. The index strategy shows that when the index cycle length is less than 20units, it can significantly reduce the average tuning time but when the index cycle length continues increasing, the average tuning time will increase contrarily. DAIL can dynamically determine the length of index cycle. Moreover, it can reach optimal integrated performance of the request drop ratio, the average accessing time and the average tuning time. 2013 Group Sparsity and Geometry Constrained Dictionary Learning for Action Recognition from Depth Maps
abstract
Human action recognition based on the depth information provided by commodity depth sensors is an important yet challenging task. The noisy depth maps, different lengths of action sequences, and free styles in performing actions, may cause large intra-class variations. In this paper, a new framework based on sparse coding and temporal pyramid matching (TPM) is proposed for depth-based human action recognition. Especially, a discriminative class-specific dictionary learning algorithm is proposed for sparse coding. By adding the group sparsity and geometry constraints, features can be well reconstructed by the sub-dictionary belonging to the same class, and the geometry relationships among features are also kept in the calculated coefficients. The proposed approach is evaluated on two benchmark datasets captured by depth cameras. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm repeatedly achieves superior performance to the state of the art algorithms. Moreover, the proposed dictionary learning method also outperforms classic dictionary learning approaches.
