| 2020 | Global visual localization in LiDAR-maps through shared 2D-3D embedding spaceabstractGlobal localization is an important and widely studied problem for many robotic applications. Place recognition approaches can be exploited to solve this task, e.g., in the autonomous driving field. While most vision-based approaches match an image w.r.t. an image database, global visual localization within LiDAR-maps remains fairly unexplored, even though the path toward high definition 3D maps, produced mainly from LiDARs, is clear. In this work we leverage Deep Neural Network (DNN) approaches to create a shared embedding space between images and LiDAR-maps, allowing for image to 3D-LiDAR place recognition. We trained a 2D and a 3D DNN that create embeddings, respectively from images and from point clouds, that are close to each other whether they refer to the same place. An extensive experimental activity is presented to assess the effectiveness of the approach w.r.t. different learning paradigms, network architectures, and loss functions. All the evaluations have been performed using the Oxford Robotcar Dataset, which encompasses a wide range of weather and light conditions. | 2017 | An online probabilistic road intersection detectorabstractIn this paper we propose a probabilistic approach for detecting and classifying urban road intersections from a moving vehicle. The approach is based on images from an onboard stereo rig; it relies on the detection of the road ground plane on one side, and on a pixel-level classification of the road on the other. The two processing pipelines are then integrated and the parameters of the road components, i.e., the intersection geometry, are inferred. As opposed to other state-of-the-art offline methods, which require processing of the whole video sequence, our approach integrates the image data by means of an online procedure. The experiments have been performed on well-known KITTI datasets, allowing for future comparisons. Augusto Luis Ballardini, Daniele Cattaneo 0001, Simone Fontana, Domenico G. Sorrenti |

| 2017 | Generation of Private Sound With a Circular Loudspeaker Array and the Weighted Pressure Matching MethodabstractIn this paper, we propose a system for private sound which is based on the weighted pressure matching method (WPMM). The aim is to design the input signals to an array of loudspeakers that allow for the synthesis of a target field defined with large amplitude variations between the so-called dark points and the listener's position. The system enables listeners to control the trade-off between directivity performance and the accuracy of reproduction of the target field at the listening position when the input energy to the array is limited. This is achieved by calculating the WPMM weight in the dark zone based on a constraint on the characteristics of the sound field in the listening zone. The system is validated for a number of predefined use-case scenarios. The results of the experiments in an anechoic environment with a circular array prototype show that listeners can control the performance trade-off in a wide frequency range. In the second part of the paper, algorithms are presented for the fast update of the input signals when the user selects a new value of the performance constraint. | 2016 | Point Clouds Registration with Probabilistic Data AssociationabstractAlthough Point Clouds Registration is a very well studied problem, with many different solutions, most of the approaches in the literature aims at aligning two dense point clouds. Instead, we tackle the problem of aligning a dense point cloud with a sparse one: a problem that has to be solved, for example, to merge maps produced by different sensors, such as a vision-based sensor and laser scanner or two different laser-based sensors. The most used approach to point clouds registration, Iterative Closest Point (ICP), is also applicable to this sub-problem. We propose an improvement over the standard ICP data association policy and we called it Probabilistic Data Association. It was derived applying statistical inference techniques on a fully probabilistic model. In our proposal, each point in the source point cloud is associated with a set of points in the target point cloud; each association is then weighted so that the weights form a probability distribution. The result is an algorithm similar to ICP but more robust w.r.t. noise and outliers. While we designed our approach to deal with the problem of dense-sparse registration, it can be successfully applied also to standard point clouds registration. | 2016 | An Indoor Localization System for Telehomecare ApplicationsabstractIn this paper, we present a novel probabilistic technique, based on the Bayes filter, able to estimate the user location, even with unreliable sensor data coming only from fixed sensors in the monitored environment. Our approach has been extensively tested in a home-like environment, as well as in a real home, and achieves very good results. We present results on two datasets, representative of real life conditions, collected during the testing phase. We detect the patient location with subroom accuracy, an improvement over the state of the art for localization using only environmental sensors. The main drawback is that it is only suitable for applications where a single person is present in the environment, like as with other approaches that do not use any mobile device. For this reason, we introduced the “telehomecare” term, therefore differentiating from generic telemedicine applications, where many people can be in the same environment at the same time.
