| 2025 | FEI: Fusion Processing of Sensing Energy and Information for Self-Sustainable Infrared Smart Vision SystemabstractIn the natural world, energy and information are deeply entwined, mutually constraining and complementing each other. To exploit this natural merit, this paper proposes a FEI strategy: Fusion processing of sensing Energy and Information for infrared smart vision system. The proposed Information-Power-Coupler (IPCp) takes the ability of simultaneous energy harvesting and low power inpixel computing, which utilizes in-situ coupled energy to process the containing information on the same focal plane. Furthermore, a self-adaptive Intelligent-Power- Controller (IPCtrl) capable of scheduling the harvested energy to complete low power neural network inference is introduced. The implementation of IPC2 system utilizes a software-hardware co-design strategy to exploit the layer-wise characteristic of the computation process and circuit topology, achieving energy-efficient self-sustainable fusion processing of sensing energy and information. Simulation results show that the IPCtrl could supply 594.68nW with the power conversion efficiency of 93.38%, when the harvested energy from the IPCp is 636.84nW. The performance validates the self-sustainability of the system with the self-powered image recognition of a complete network running at 4fps with an accuracy of 99.4%. | 2025 | CoVis: A Collaborative Framework for Fine-Grained Graphic Visual UnderstandingabstractGraphic visual content helps in promoting information communication and inspiration divergence. However, the interpretation of visual content currently relies mainly on humans' personal knowledge background, thereby affecting the quality and efficiency of information acquisition and understanding. To improve the quality and efficiency of visual information transmission and avoid the limitation of the observer due to the information cocoon, we propose CoVis, a collaborative framework for fine-grained visual understanding. By designing and implementing a cascaded dual-layer segmentation network coupled with a large-language-model (LLM) based content generator, the framework extracts as much knowledge as possible from an image. Then, it generates visual analytics for images, assisting observers in comprehending imagery from a more holistic perspective. Quantitative experiments and qualitative experiments based on 32 human participants indicate that the CoVis has better performance than current methods in feature extraction and can generate more comprehensive and detailed visual descriptions than current general-purpose large models. | 2025 | A 45-nW 10-b 20-kS/s SAR ADC Based on Single-Capacitor Switching Scheme in 180-nm CMOSabstractThis work presents a 10-bit 20-kS/s successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with a proposed single-capacitor switching scheme. Based on behavioral-level simulations and prototype chip testing, ultralow-power operation and significant chip area reduction are achieved. This novel switching scheme employs voltage level shifting instead of charge redistribution for the two most significant bit (MSB) decisions, thus eliminating switching power consumption. For the remaining bit decision, the technique minimizes reference voltage transitions while involving only a single capacitor in each switching. By employing the proposed switching scheme, the capacitance spread of capacitive digital-to-analog converter (CDAC) is reduced from conventional$2^{n-1}$to$2^{n-3}$, which reduces the CDAC area, relaxes capacitor matching requirements, and improves matching linearity. A prototype of the proposed ADC was designed and fabricated in SMIC 180-nm CMOS technology. The chip operates with a 0.6-V supply voltage and consumes 45-nW power at a sampling rate of 20 kS/s. The measurement results also show the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) of 56.4 dB, the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 70.4 dB, and the ENOB of 9.26 are achieved. The ADC occupies an area of only 0.063 mm2and attains the Walden figure of merit of 5.06 fJ/conversion-step at the Nyquist rate. Peiyuan Wan, Xu Liu 0002, Dezhen Yang, Sujuan Liu, Yongzhe Zhang |

| 2019 | Composing Optimization Techniques for Vertex-Centric Graph Processing via Communication ChannelsabstractPregel's vertex-centric model allows us to implement many interesting graph algorithms, where optimization plays an important role in making it practically useful. Although many optimizations have been developed for dealing with different performance issues, it is hard to compose them together to optimize complex algorithms, where we have to deal with multiple performance issues at the same time. In this paper, we propose a new approach to composing optimizations, by making use of the channel interface, as a replacement of Pregel's message passing and aggregator mechanism, which can better structure the communication in Pregel algorithms. We demonstrate that it is convenient to optimize a Pregel program by simply using a proper channel from the channel library or composing them to deal with multiple performance issues. We intensively evaluate the approach through many nontrivial examples. By adopting the channel interface, our system achieves an all-around performance gain for various graph algorithms. In particular, the composition of different optimizations makes the S-V algorithm 3.39x faster than the current best implementation. Yongzhe Zhang, Zhenjiang Hu 0002 |

| 2015 | TIP-Code: A Three Independent Parity Code to Tolerate Triple Disk Failures with Optimal Update ComplextiyabstractWith the rapid expansion of data storages and the increasing risk of data failures, triple Disk Failure Tolerant arrays (3DFTs) become popular and widely used. They achieve high fault tolerance via erasure codes. One class of erasure codes called Maximum Distance Separable (MDS) codes, which aims to offer data protection with minimal storage overhead, is a typical choice to enhance the reliability of storage systems. However, existing 3DFTs based on MDS codes are inefficient in terms of update complexity, which results in poor write performance. In this paper, we present an efficient MDS coding scheme called TIP-code, which is purely based on XOR operations and can tolerate triple disk failures. It uses three independent parities (horizontal, diagonal and anti-diagonal parities), and offers optimal update complexity. To demonstrate the effectiveness of TIP-code, we conduct several quantitative analysis and experiments. The results show that, compared to typical MDS codes for 3DFTs (i.e., Cauchy-RS and STAR codes), TIP-code improves the single write performance by up to 46.6%. | 2015 | PCM: A Parity-Check Matrix Based Approach to Improve Decoding Performance of XOR-based Erasure CodesabstractIn large storage systems, erasure codes is a primary technique to provide high reliability with low monetary cost. Among various erasure codes, a major category called XORbased codes uses purely XOR operations to generate redundant data and offer low computational complexity. These codes are conventionally implemented via matrix based method or several specialized non-matrix based methods. However, these approaches are insufficient on decoding performance, which affects the reliability and availability of storage systems. To address the problem, in this paper, we propose a novel Parity-Check Matrix based (PCM) approach, which is a general-purpose method to implement XOR-based codes, and increases the decoding performance by using smaller and sparser matrices. To demonstrate the effectiveness of PCM, we conduct several experiments by using different XOR-based codes. The evaluation results show that, compared to typical matrix based decoding methods, PCM can improve the decoding speed by up to a factor of 1.5× when using EVENODD code (an erasure code for correcting double disk failures), and accelerate the decoding process of STAR code (an erasure code for correcting triple disk failures) by up to a factor of 2.4×. | 2013 | Piggyback CrowdSensing (PCS): energy efficient crowdsourcing of mobile sensor data by exploiting smartphone app opportunitiesabstractFueled by the widespread adoption of sensor-enabled smartphones, mobile crowdsourcing is an area of rapid innovation. Many crowd-powered sensor systems are now part of our daily life -- for example, providing highway congestion information. However, participation in these systems can easily expose users to a significant drain on already limited mobile battery resources. For instance, the energy burden of sampling certain sensors (such as WiFi or GPS) can quickly accumulate to levels users are unwilling to bear. Crowd system designers must minimize the negative energy side-effects of participation if they are to acquire and maintain large-scale user populations. Nicholas D.
