| 2025 | From Elements to Design: A Layered Approach for Automatic Graphic Design CompositionabstractIn this work, we investigate automatic design composition from multimodal graphic elements. Although recent studies have developed various generative models for graphic design, they usually face the following limitations: they only focus on certain subtasks and are far from achieving the design composition task; they do not consider the hierarchical information of graphic designs during the generation process. To tackle these issues, we introduce the layered design principle into Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) and propose a novel approach, called LaDeCo, to accomplish this challenging task. Specifically, LaDeCo first performs layer planning for a given element set, dividing the input elements into different semantic layers according to their contents. Based on the planning results, it subsequently predicts element attributes that control the design composition in a layer-wise manner, and includes the rendered image of previously generated layers into the context. With this insightful design, LaDeCo decomposes the difficult task into smaller manageable steps, making the genera tion process smoother and clearer. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of LaDeCo in design composition. Furthermore, we show that LaDeCo enables some interesting applications in graphic design, such as resolution adjustment, design decoration, design variation, etc. In addition, it even outperforms the specialized models in some design subtasks without any task-specific training. | 2025 | FlexCAD: Unified and Versatile Controllable CAD Generation with Fine-tuned Large Language ModelsabstractRecently, there is a growing interest in creating computer-aided design (CAD) models based on user intent, known as controllable CAD generation. Existing work offers limited controllability and needs separate models for different types of control, reducing efficiency and practicality. To achieve controllable generation across all CAD construction hierarchies, such as sketch-extrusion, extrusion, sketch, face, loop and curve, we propose FlexCAD, a unified model by fine-tuning large language models (LLMs). First, to enhance comprehension by LLMs, we represent a CAD model as a structured text by abstracting each hierarchy as a sequence of text tokens. Second, to address various controllable generation tasks in a unified model, we introduce a hierarchy-aware masking strategy. Specifically, during training, we mask a hierarchy-aware field in the CAD text with a mask token. This field, composed of a sequence of tokens, can be set flexibly to represent various hierarchies. Subsequently, we ask LLMs to predict this masked field. During inference, the user intent is converted into a CAD text with a mask token replacing the part the user wants to modify, which is then fed into FlexCAD to generate new CAD models.
Comprehensive experiments on public dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of FlexCAD in both generation quality and controllability. Zhanwei Zhang, Shizhao Sun, Wenxiao Wang 0001, Deng Cai 0001, Jiang Bian 0002 |

| 2025 | Text-to-CAD Generation Through Infusing Visual Feedback in Large Language ModelsabstractCreating Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models requires significant expertise and effort. Text-to-CAD, which converts textual descriptions into CAD parametric sequences, is crucial in streamlining this process. Recent studies have utilized ground-truth parametric sequences, known as sequential signals, as supervision to achieve this goal. However, CAD models are inherently multimodal, comprising parametric sequences and corresponding rendered visual objects. Besides, the rendering process from parametric sequences to visual objects is many-to-one. Therefore, both sequential and visual signals are critical for effective training. In this work, we introduce CADFusion, a framework that uses Large Language Models (LLMs) as the backbone and alternates between two training stages: the sequential learning (SL) stage and the visual feedback (VF) stage. In the SL stage, we train LLMs using ground-truth parametric sequences, enabling the generation of logically coherent parametric sequences. In the VF stage, we reward parametric sequences that render into visually preferred objects and penalize those that do not, allowing LLMs to learn how rendered visual objects are perceived and evaluated. These two stages alternate throughout the training, ensuring balanced learning and preserving benefits of both signals. Experiments demonstrate that CADFusion significantly improves performance, both qualitatively and quantitatively. Shizhao Sun, Jiang Bian 0002 |

| 2025 | CAD-Editor: A Locate-then-Infill Framework with Automated Training Data Synthesis for Text-Based CAD EditingabstractComputer Aided Design (CAD) is indispensable across various industries. Text-based CAD editing, which automates the modification of CAD models based on textual instructions, holds great potential but remains underexplored. Existing methods primarily focus on design variation generation or text-based CAD generation, either lacking support for text-based control or neglecting existing CAD models as constraints. We introduce CAD-Editor, the first framework for text-based CAD editing. To address the challenge of demanding triplet data with accurate correspondence for training, we propose an automated data synthesis pipeline. This pipeline utilizes design variation models to generate pairs of original and edited CAD models and employs Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) to summarize their differences into editing instructions. To tackle the composite nature of text-based CAD editing, we propose a locate-then-infill framework that decomposes the task into two focused sub-tasks: locating regions requiring modification and infilling these regions with appropriate edits. Large Language Models (LLMs) serve as the backbone for both sub-tasks, leveraging their capabilities in natural language understanding and CAD knowledge. Experiments show that CAD-Editor achieves superior performance both quantitatively and qualitatively. Shizhao Sun, Qi Liu 0003, Jiang Bian 0002 |

| 2025 | CADMorph: Geometry‑Driven Parametric CAD Editing via a Plan-Generate-Verify LoopabstractA Computer-Aided Design (CAD) model encodes an object in two coupled forms: a \emph{parametric construction sequence} and its resulting \emph{visible geometric shape}.
During iterative design, adjustments to the geometric shape inevitably require synchronized edits to the underlying parametric sequence, called \emph{geometry-driven parametric CAD editing}.
The task calls for 1) preserving the original sequence’s structure, 2) ensuring each edit's semantic validity, and 3) maintaining high shape fidelity to the target shape, all under scarce editing data triplets.
We present \emph{CADMorph}, an iterative \emph{plan–generate–verify} framework that orchestrates pretrained domain-specific foundation models during inference: a \emph{parameter-to-shape} (P2S) latent diffusion model and a \emph{masked-parameter-prediction} (MPP) model.
In the planning stage, cross-attention maps from the P2S model pinpoint the segments that need modification and offer editing masks.
The MPP model then infills these masks with semantically valid edits in the generation stage.
During verification, the P2S model embeds each candidate sequence in shape-latent space, measures its distance to the target shape, and selects the closest one.
The three stages leverage the inherent geometric consciousness and design knowledge in pretrained priors, and thus tackle structure preservation, semantic validity, and shape fidelity respectively.
Besides, both P2S and MPP models are trained without triplet data, bypassing the data-scarcity bottleneck.
CADMorph surpasses GPT-4o and specialized CAD baselines, and supports downstream applications such as iterative editing and reverse-engineering enhancement. Weijian Ma, Shizhao Sun, Jiang Bian 0002 |

| 2024 | IconDM: Text-Guided Icon Set Expansion Using Diffusion ModelsabstractIcons are ubiquitous visual elements in graphic design, yet their creation is often complex and time-consuming. To resolve this problem, we draw inspiration from the booming text-to-image field and propose Text-Guided Icon Set Expansion, a novel task that helps users design high-quality icons using textual descriptions. Besides, users can control the style consistency of the created icons by inputting a few hand-crafted icons as style reference. Despite its practicality, the task poses two unique challenges. (i) Abstract Concept Visualization. Abstract concepts like technology and health are frequently encountered in icon creation, but their visualization is not straightforward and requires a grounding process that translates them into physical, easy-to-depict objects. (ii) Fine-grained Style Transfer. Unlike ordinary images, icons exhibit richer fine-grained stylistic elements, including tones, line widths, shapes, shadow effects, etc., which puts higher demands on capturing and preserving detailed styles during icon generation. | 2023 | LayoutFormer++: Conditional Graphic Layout Generation via Constraint Serialization and Decoding Space RestrictionabstractConditional graphic layout generation, which generates realistic layouts according to user constraints, is a challenging task that has not been well-studied yet. First, there is limited discussion about how to handle diverse user constraints flexibly and uniformly. Second, to make the layouts conform to user constraints, existing work often sacrifices generation quality significantly. In this work, we propose LayoutFormer++ to tackle the above problems. First, to flexibly handle diverse constraints, we propose a constraint serialization scheme, which represents different user constraints as sequences of tokens with a predefined format. Then, we formulate conditional layout generation as a sequence-to-sequence transformation, and leverage encoder-decoder framework with Transformer as the basic architecture. Furthermore, to make the layout better meet user requirements without harming quality, we propose a decoding space restriction strategy. Specifically, we prune the predicted distribution by ignoring the options that definitely violate user constraints and likely result in low-quality layouts, and make the model samples from the restricted distribution. Experiments demonstrate that LayoutFormer++ outperforms existing approaches on all the tasks in terms of both better generation quality and less constraint violation. | 2023 | LayoutDiffusion: Improving Graphic Layout Generation by Discrete Diffusion Probabilistic ModelsabstractCreating graphic layouts is a fundamental step in graphic designs. In this work, we present a novel generative model named LayoutDiffusion for automatic layout generation. As layout is typically represented as a sequence of discrete tokens, LayoutDiffusion models layout generation as a discrete denoising diffusion process. It learns to reverse a mild forward process, in which layouts become increasingly chaotic with the growth of forward steps and layouts in the neighboring steps do not differ too much. Designing such a mild forward process is however very challenging as layout has both categorical attributes and ordinal attributes. To tackle the challenge, we summarize three critical factors for achieving a mild forward process for the layout, i.e., legality, coordinate proximity and type disruption. Based on the factors, we propose a block-wise transition matrix coupled with a piece-wise linear noise schedule. Experiments on RICO and PubLayNet datasets show that LayoutDiffusion outperforms state-of-the-art approaches significantly. Moreover, it enables two conditional layout generation tasks in a plug-and-play manner without re-training and achieves better performance than existing methods. | 2023 | A Parse-Then-Place Approach for Generating Graphic Layouts from Textual DescriptionsabstractCreating layouts is a fundamental step in graphic design. In this work, we propose to use text as the guidance to create graphic layouts, i.e., Text-to-Layout, aiming to lower the design barriers. Text-to-Layout is a challenging task, because it needs to consider the implicit, combined, and incomplete layout constraints from text, each of which has not been studied in previous work. To address this, we present a two-stage approach, named parse-then-place. The approach introduces an intermediate representation (IR) between text and layout to represent diverse layout constraints. With IR, Text-to-Layout is decomposed into a parse stage and a place stage. The parse stage takes a textual description as input and generates an IR, in which the implicit constraints from the text are transformed into explicit ones. The place stage generates layouts based on the IR. To model combined and incomplete constraints, we use a Transformer-based layout generation model and carefully design a way to represent constraints and layouts as sequences. Besides, we adopt the pretrain-then-finetune strategy to boost the performance of the layout generation model with large-scale unlabeled layouts. To evaluate our approach, we construct two Text-to-Layout datasets and conduct experiments on them. Quantitative results, qualitative analysis, and user studies demonstrate our approach’s effectiveness. Shizhao Sun, Weijiang Xu, Ting Liu 0002, Jian-Guang Lou, Dongmei Zhang 0001 |

| 2023 | LayoutPrompter: Awaken the Design Ability of Large Language ModelsabstractConditional graphic layout generation, which automatically maps user constraints to high-quality layouts, has attracted widespread attention today. Although recent works have achieved promising performance, the lack of versatility and data efficiency hinders their practical applications. In this work, we propose LayoutPrompter, which leverages large language models (LLMs) to address the above problems through in-context learning. LayoutPrompter is made up of three key components, namely input-output serialization, dynamic exemplar selection and layout ranking. Specifically, the input-output serialization component meticulously designs the input and output formats for each layout generation task. Dynamic exemplar selection is responsible for selecting the most helpful prompting exemplars for a given input. And a layout ranker is used to pick the highest quality layout from multiple outputs of LLMs. We conduct experiments on all existing layout generation tasks using four public datasets. Despite the simplicity of our approach, experimental results show that LayoutPrompter can compete with or even outperform state-of-the-art approaches on these tasks without any model training or fine-tuning. This demonstrates the effectiveness of this versatile and training-free approach. In addition, the ablation studies show that LayoutPrompter is significantly superior to the training-based baseline in a low-data regime, further indicating the data efficiency of LayoutPrompter. | 2023 | Aesthetics++: Refining Graphic Designs by Exploring Design Principles and Human PreferenceabstractDuring the creation of graphic designs, individuals inevitably spend a lot of time and effort on adjusting visual attributes (e.g., positions, colors, and fonts) of elements to make them more aesthetically pleasing. It is a trial-and-error process, requires repetitive edits, and relies on good design knowledge. In this work, we seek to alleviate such difficulty by automatically suggesting aesthetic improvements, i.e., taking an existing design as the input and generating a refined version with improved aesthetic quality as the output. This goal presents two challenges: proposing a refined design based on the user-given one, and assessing whether the new design is better aesthetically. To cope with these challenges, we propose a design principle-guided candidate generation stage and a data-driven candidate evaluation stage. In the candidate generation stage, we generate candidate designs by leveraging design principles as the guidance to make changes around the existing design. In the candidate evaluation stage, we learn a ranking model upon a dataset that can reflect humans' aesthetic preference, and use it to choose the most aesthetically pleasing one from the generated candidates. We implement a prototype system on presentation slides and demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through quantitative analysis, sample results, and user studies. | 2022 | Coarse-to-Fine Generative Modeling for Graphic LayoutsabstractEven though graphic layout generation has attracted growing attention recently, it is still challenging to synthesis realistic and diverse layouts, due to the complicated element relationships and varied element arrangements. In this work, we seek to improve the performance of layout generation by incorporating the concept of regions, which consist of a smaller number of elements and appears like a simple layout, into the generation process. Specifically, we leverage Variational Autoencoder (VAE) as the overall architecture and decompose the decoding process into two stages. The first stage predicts representations for regions, and the second stage fills in the detailed position for each element within the region based on the predicted region representation. Compared to prior studies that merely abstract the layout into a list of elements and generate all the element positions in one go, our approach has at least two advantages. First, by the two-stage decoding, our approach decouples the complex layout generation task into several simple layout generation tasks, which reduces the problem difficulty. Second, the predicted regions can help the model roughly know what the graphic layout looks like and serve as global context to improve the generation of detailed element positions. Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms the existing methods, especially on the complex graphic layouts. | 2021 | Retrieve-Then-Adapt: Example-based Automatic Generation for Proportion-related InfographicsabstractInfographic is a data visualization technique which combines graphic and textual descriptions in an aesthetic and effective manner. Creating infographics is a difficult and time-consuming process which often requires significant attempts and adjustments even for experienced designers, not to mention novice users with limited design expertise. Recently, a few approaches have been proposed to automate the creation process by applying predefined blueprints to user information. However, predefined blueprints are often hard to create, hence limited in volume and diversity. In contrast, good infogrpahics have been created by professionals and accumulated on the Internet rapidly. These online examples often represent a wide variety of design styles, and serve as exemplars or inspiration to people who like to create their own infographics. Based on these observations, we propose to generate infographics by automatically imitating examples. We present a two-stage approach, namely retrieve-then-adapt. In the retrieval stage, we index online examples by their visual elements. For a given user information, we transform it to a concrete query by sampling from a learned distribution about visual elements, and then find appropriate examples in our example library based on the similarity between example indexes and the query. For a retrieved example, we generate an initial drafts by replacing its content with user information. However, in many cases, user information cannot be perfectly fitted to retrieved examples. Therefore, we further introduce an adaption stage. Specifically, we propose a MCMC-like approach and leverage recursive neural networks to help adjust the initial draft and improve its visual appearance iteratively, until a satisfactory result is obtained. We implement our approach on widely-used proportion-related infographics, and demonstrate its effectiveness by sample results and expert reviews. | 2016 | On the Depth of Deep Neural Networks: A Theoretical ViewabstractPeople believe that depth plays an important role in success of deep neural networks (DNN). However, this belief lacks solid theoretical justifications as far as we know. We investigate role of depth from perspective of margin bound. In margin bound, expected error is upper bounded by empirical margin error plus Rademacher Average (RA) based capacity term. First, we derive an upper bound for RA of DNN, and show that it increases with increasing depth. This indicates negative impact of depth on test performance. Second, we show that deeper networks tend to have larger representation power (measured by Betti numbers based complexity) than shallower networks in multi-class setting, and thus can lead to smaller empirical margin error. This implies positive impact of depth. The combination of these two results shows that for DNN with restricted number of hidden units, increasing depth is not always good since there is a tradeoff between positive and negative impacts. These results inspire us to seek alternative ways to achieve positive impact of depth, e.g., imposing margin-based penalty terms to cross entropy loss so as to reduce empirical margin error without increasing depth. Our experiments show that in this way, we achieve significantly better test performance. Shizhao Sun, Wei Chen 0034, Liwei Wang 0001, Xiaoguang Liu 0001, Tie-Yan Liu |

| 2013 | Exploiting query term correlation for list caching in web search enginesabstractCaching technologies have been widely employed to boost the performance of Web search engines. Motivated by the correlation between terms in query logs from a commercial search engine, we explore the idea of a caching scheme based on pairs of terms, rather than individual terms (which is the typical approach used by search engines today). We propose an inverted list caching policy, based on the Least Recently Used method, in which the co-occurring correlation between terms in the query stream is accounted for when deciding on which terms to keep in the cache. We consider not only the term co-occurrence within the same query but also the co-occurrence between separate queries. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can improve not only the cache hit ratio but also the overall throughput of the system when compared to existing list caching algorithms.
