2026 One-shot Portrait Stylization via Geometric Alignment
abstract
Portrait stylization casts vivid artistic style drawn from style examples to portrait photos. Although recently extensively studied with machine learning algorithms, existing methods still face challenges in stylizing portraits from a single style reference, severely limiting their potential for real-world applications. In this paper, we propose a portrait stylization method that learns style reference from a single artistic portrait image. Unlike previous StyleGAN based methods that heavily rely on the quality of GAN inversion or diffusion based methods that introduce computational expensive operations and fall short of precise control, our method achieves high-quality stylization with small computation and parameter budget. Specifically, we employ geometric alignment to build spatial correlation between content images and style reference. A geometry LoRA and a style LoRA are then jointly optimized based on a pre-trained diffusion backbone respectively, with orthogonal adaptation used to disentangle the geometry and style information. During inference, the style LoRA is integrated into the diffusion backbone and ControlNet is further combined to facilitate better spatial and identity control. We illustrate abundant stylized portraits with multiple styles. Qualitative comparison, quantitative validation and user study prove that our method outperforms existing methods, and ablation study demonstrates the effectiveness of each components.

2025 Image Referenced Sketch Colorization Based on Animation Creation Workflow
abstract
Sketch colorization plays an important role in animation and digital illustration production tasks. However, existing methods still meet problems in that text-guided methods fail to provide accurate color and style reference, hint-guided methods still involve manual operation, and image-referenced methods are prone to cause artifacts. To address these limitations, we propose a diffusion-based framework inspired by real-world animation production work-flows. Our approach leverages the sketch as the spatial guidance and an RGB image as the color reference, and separately extracts foreground and background from the reference image with spatial masks. Particularly, we introduce a split cross-attention mechanism with LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) modules. They are trained separately with foreground and background regions to control the corresponding embeddings for keys and values in cross-attention. This design allows the diffusion model to integrate information from foreground and background independently, preventing interference and eliminating the spatial artifacts. During inference, we design switchable inference modes for diverse use scenarios by changing modules activated in the framework. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments, along with user studies, demonstrate our advantages over existing methods in generating high-qualigy artifact-free results with geometric mismatched references. Ablation studies further confirm the effectiveness of each component. Codes are available at https://github.com/tellurion-kanata/colorizeDiffusion.

2024 Complex-Valued Gabor-Attention Residual Fusion Network for Iris Recognition
abstract
Iris recognition has gained significant attention in identity verification due to the unique, stable texture patterns in iris. Successfully extracting these patterns is essential for quick and precise identification. Although deep learning methods have automated the iris recognition, they predominantly rely on real-valued networks that overlook the complex-valued representation of iris texture. This means they cannot effectively process phase and amplitude information, and fail to integrate domain-specific knowledge of iris, thereby not fully capturing the intricate details of the iris texture. Inspired by classical manual methods that efficiently harness the complex-valued representation of the iris to extract both amplitude and phase information. We integrate Gabor filters with complex-valued neural networks, propose a Complex-Valued Gabor-Attention Residual Fusion Network (GRFN) tailored for iris recognition, aiming to comprehensively capture the iris texture’s multi-scale and multi-orientation phase and amplitude features. The GRFN incorporates adaptive Gabor Complex-Valued Convolution Kernels (GCVK) to introduce a Gabor attention mechanism focused on iris biometric characteristics. Furthermore, we propose a novel residual feature fusion approach that selects and merges local and global features across multiple directions and scales, mitigating model degradation and enhancing the network’s ability to extract iris texture features effectively. Extensive experiments show that the proposed network outperforms the state-of-the-art performance on two benchmark datasets.

2024 On Statistical Rates and Provably Efficient Criteria of Latent Diffusion Transformers (DiTs)
abstract
We investigate the statistical and computational limits of latent **Di**ffusion **T**ransformers (**DiTs**) under the low-dimensional linear latent space assumption. Statistically, we study the universal approximation and sample complexity of the DiTs score function, as well as the distribution recovery property of the initial data. Specifically, under mild data assumptions, we derive an approximation error bound for the score network of latent DiTs, which is sub-linear in the latent space dimension. Additionally, we derive the corresponding sample complexity bound and show that the data distribution generated from the estimated score function converges toward a proximate area of the original one. Computationally, we characterize the hardness of both forward inference and backward computation of latent DiTs, assuming the Strong Exponential Time Hypothesis (SETH). For forward inference, we identify efficient criteria for all possible latent DiTs inference algorithms and showcase our theory by pushing the efficiency toward almost-linear time inference. For backward computation, we leverage the low-rank structure within the gradient computation of DiTs training for possible algorithmic speedup. Specifically, we show that such speedup achieves almost-linear time latent DiTs training by casting the DiTs gradient as a series of chained low-rank approximations with bounded error. Under the low-dimensional assumption, we show that the statistical rates and the computational efficiency are all dominated by the dimension of the subspace, suggesting that latent DiTs have the potential to bypass the challenges associated with the high dimensionality of initial data.

2021 The Animation Transformer: Visual Correspondence via Segment Matching
abstract
Visual correspondence is a fundamental building block on the way to building assistive tools for hand-drawn animation. However, while a large body of work has focused on learning visual correspondences at the pixel-level, few approaches have emerged to learn correspondence at the level of line enclosures (segments) that naturally occur in hand-drawn animation. Exploiting this structure in animation has numerous benefits: it avoids the memory complexity of pixel attention over high resolution images and enables the use of real-world animation datasets that contain correspondence information at the level of per-segment colors. To that end, we propose the Animation Transformer (AnT) which uses a Transformer-based architecture to learn the spatial and visual relationships between segments across a sequence of images. By leveraging a forward match loss and a cycle consistency loss our approach attains excellent results compared to state-of-the-art pixel approaches on challenging datasets from real animation productions that lack ground-truth correspondence labels.

2020 Learning to Shadow Hand-Drawn Sketches
abstract
We present a fully automatic method to generate detailed and accurate artistic shadows from pairs of line drawing sketches and lighting directions. We also contribute a new dataset of one thousand examples of pairs of line drawings and shadows that are tagged with lighting directions. Remarkably, the generated shadows quickly communicate the underlying 3D structure of the sketched scene. Consequently, the shadows generated by our approach can be used directly or as an excellent starting point for artists. We demonstrate that the deep learning network we propose takes a hand-drawn sketch, builds a 3D model in latent space, and renders the resulting shadows. The generated shadows respect the hand-drawn lines and underlying 3D space and contain sophisticated and accurate details, such as self-shadowing effects. Moreover, the generated shadows contain artistic effects, such as rim lighting or halos appearing from backlighting, that would be achievable with traditional 3D rendering methods.

2017 An Efficient Approach to Model-Based Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning
abstract
We propose a model-based approach to hierarchical reinforcement learning that exploits shared knowledge and selective execution at different levels of abstraction, to efficiently solve large, complex problems. Our framework adopts a new transition dynamics learning algorithm that identifies the common action-feature combinations of the subtasks, and evaluates the subtask execution choices through simulation. The framework is sample efficient, and tolerates uncertain and incomplete problem characterization of the subtasks. We test the framework on common benchmark problems and complex simulated robotic environments. It compares favorably against the state-of-the-art algorithms, and scales well in very large problems.

2017 SEAPoT-RL: Selective Exploration Algorithm for Policy Transfer in RL
abstract
We propose a new method for transferring a policy from a source task to a target task in model-based reinforcement learning. Our work is motivated by scenarios where a robotic agent operates in similar but challenging environments, such as hospital wards, differentiated by structural arrangements or obstacles, such as furniture. We address problems that require fast responses adapted from incomplete, prior knowledge of the agent in new scenarios. We present an efficient selective exploration strategy that maximally reuses the source task policy. Reuse efficiency is effected through identifying sub-spaces that are different in the target environment, thus limiting the exploration needed in the target task. We empirically show that SEAPoT performs better in terms of jump starts and cumulative average rewards, as compared to existing state-of-the-art policy reuse methods.

2013 Online Feature Selection for Model-based Reinforcement Learning
abstract
We propose a new framework for learning the world dynamics of feature-rich environments in model-based reinforcement learning. The main idea is formalized as a new, factored state-transition representation that supports efficient online-learning of the relevant features. We construct the transition models through predicting how the actions change the world. We introduce an online sparse coding learning technique for feature selection in high-dimensional spaces. We derive theoretical guarantees for our framework and empirically demonstrate its practicality in both simulated and real robotics domains.
