| 2010 | P2P-Based VOD Content Distribution Platform with Guaranteed Video QualityabstractIn this paper, we propose a P2P-based content distribution mechanism for video-on-demand service in IPTV. Different from traditional P2P-based content distribution mechanisms, our solution mainly focuses on how telecom operators utilize P2P technology to construct/enhance their own content delivery network for IPTV. The proposed mechanism takes into account the influence on the design of P2P mechanism by the unique properties of the IPTV scenario, and tries to enhance the P2P-based service by utilizing the support of network QoS and server resources. Simulation results show that our solution can achieve good scalability while providing guaranteed video quality. Hideya Yoshiuchi, Satoshi Yoshizawa |

| 2010 | Trick Play Function for VOD with SVC sourceabstractNetworked video applications have become more and more popular. However, most commercially available video on demand (VOD) solutions still lack trick play features (fast forward, fast rewind etc.), because it usually needs high processing complexity and huge consumption of network bandwidth to support trick play function. On the other hand, H.264 Scalable Video Coding (SVC) will be adopted in more and more video contents, and have great impact on the video application. In this paper, we propose a mechanism to support trick play function for H.264 SVC video source. According to different fast speed, appropriate combination of temporal and SNR layers are selected and transmitted in server side. Performance evaluation results show that the proposed mechanism can effectively reduce network bandwidth consumption, while keeping satisfied quality of experience (QoE) for users. | 2007 | Simulation and Basic Experiment of Inter Radio System Handover for Cognitive RadioabstractCognitive radio system consists of multiple wireless accesses that cover overlapping area, and cognitive terminals that use one or more of the wireless accesses simultaneously. In this paper, we propose the architecture of the cognitive radio system, and the inter-system handover protocols. In the proposed architecture, each cognitive terminal, that has multiple radio systems, operates with a single local IP address. The control sequence and packet format are designed to achieve fast handover among the radio systems. Based on the proposed architecture, we have developed both a simulator and a testbed system with WiMAX and wireless LAN. Through simulation and testbed, we have proved that stream data can be delivered continuously without any effects of the handover. Also, we present the evaluation result of the end-to-end latency on the testbed system. Seishi Hanaoka, Junji Yamamoto, Koji Wakayama, Satoshi Yoshizawa, Tetsuhiko Hirata |

| 2004 | Performance prediction method for Web-access response time distribution using formulaabstractSince there are many causes that can affect Web response time, it is difficult to predict. NetForecast Inc. has proposed a formula to calculate the response time of an application over the TCP/IP layer. This paper proposes a method to generate a probability function for the response time by using NetForecast's formula. This calculation method uses two input parameters: the file-size cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the delay probability density function (PDF). In the formula, the data sampled from the file-size CDF is input as the payload-length parameter, and the data sampled from the delay PDF is input as the round-trip delay parameter. Processing these parameters using the performance prediction method, we can generate the response-time CDF. Morihito Miyagi, Keiko Ohkubo, Mikio Kataoka, Satoshi Yoshizawa |

| 2004 | Component-Based Execution Environments of Network Elements and a Protocol for Their ConfigurationabstractIt has been more than a decade since the introduction of programmability in the network elements as the basis for providing rapid deployment and customization of new services across heterogeneous networks. Different fields, research initiatives and fora at different or same points in time have attempted in their own way to give their definition of programmability and how it should be realized to facilitate service deployment. Although these efforts seem, from the outset, as antagonistic to each other, and most of the time heavily dependent on the underlying networking technology, strong evidence points toward common features, that when put together, as pieces of a puzzle, give rise to a common picture which, we believe, is representative of the term "programmable networks." In this paper, we are going to bring out and elaborate on a number of such features, arguing are they are the ingredients that serve as building materials and principles to the next generation network element architecture enabled to realize the yet elusive rapid service deployment. Our analysis will draw from the state of the art and our experiences in working in the future active IP network (FAIN) project. As a result, we will take advantage of these observations and propose a new protocol that allows a programmable network to be configured in such a way that new functionality may be requested and installed, thus, extending the capabilities and the services offered by the network.
