2005 Digital signal processing and digital system design using discrete cosine transform [student course]
abstract
The discrete cosine transform (DCT) is an important functional block for image processing applications. The implementation of a DCT has been viewed as a specialized research task. We apply a micro-architecture based methodology to the hardware implementation of an efficient DCT algorithm in a digital design course. Several circuit optimization and design space exploration techniques at the register-transfer and logic levels are introduced in class for generating the final design. The students not only learn how the algorithm can be implemented, but also receive insights about how other signal processing algorithms can be translated into a hardware implementation. Since signal processing has very broad applications, the study and implementation of an extensively used signal processing algorithm in a digital design course significantly enhances the learning experience in both digital signal processing and digital design areas for the students.

1989 Mind: a module binder for high level synthesis
abstract
Mind, a module binder for the Bridge synthesis system, is described. The practical considerations for generating production-quality designs are emphasized. These considerations include the separation of single-function and multiple-function ALU (arithmetic and logic unit) generators, the extraction of constant and feedthrough control signals, as well as the incorporation of a net-list post processor to eliminate constant inputs, floating outputs, and feedthrough wires. Experimental data indicate that the application of these optimization techniques results in significant area reduction.>

1986 Automated Synthesis of Data Paths in Digital Systems
abstract
This paper presents a unifying procedure, called Facet, for the automated synthesis of data paths at the register-transfer level. The procedure minimizes the number of storage elements, data operators, and interconnection units. A design generator named Emerald, based on Facet, was developed and implemented to facilitate extensive experiments with the methodology. The input to the design generator is a behavioral description which is viewed as a code sequence. Emerald provides mechanisms for interactively manipulating the code sequence. Different forms of the code sequence are mapped into data paths of different cost and speed. Data paths for the behavioral descriptions of the AM2910, the AM2901, and the IBM System/370 were produced and analyzed. Designs for the AM2910 and the AM2901 are compared with commercial designs. Overall, the total number of gates required for Emerald's designs is about 15 percent more than the commercial designs. The design space spanned by the behavioral specification of the AM2901 is extensively explored.
