2023 Lightweight Network-Based IoT Device Authentication in Cloud Services
abstract
Internet of Things (IoT) devices can be divided into two main categories: resource-rich devices such as smart TVs, fitness machines and connected vehicles; and resource-constrained such as low-battery body sensors, pacemakers or bridge monitoring sensors. This work focuses on the second type of devices, which usually have low computing power and/or demanding energy-consumption restrictions (e.g. unable to be charged frequently). It presents three lightweight approaches to provide constrained IoT devices with strong authentication by leveraging the trust in the cellular network and associated standard authentication mechanisms. Furthermore, leveraging the secure communication between cellular devices and the core network, two proposed solutions introduce as well a core network broker that secures the communication of constrained IoT devices that don't have capabilities establish/use secure channels.

2015 A Video Competition to Promote Informal Engagement with Pedagogical Topics in a School Community
abstract
This paper presents a study developed in the scope of a larger project that aims to understand how video editing and content sharing in public displays can be used at schools to promote the informal engagement of students with curricular contents that are essential to foster future learning. The study involved a video competition where students were invited to create videos around specific pedagogical topics. These videos were subsequently presented in the public display at the school, and students could use a mobile application to rate, create comments or just bookmark the videos. Findings suggest that students are receptive to creating videos and sharing them in public displays. However, the results also show that few students that used the application to interact with the content. Many reasons for this are presented such as unawareness that the display is interactive ‘because it seems like a regular TV’, too small a number of interesting videos shown during the video contest. Particular barriers included not owning a mobile device capable of interacting, and the limitation of the large screen which does not allow searching ‘the videos we like’, as YouTube seems to do.

2015 Internet of things mobile gateway services for intelligent personal assistants
abstract
The wide dissemination of Internet around the world changed the way people communicate among them. The evolution of the information and communication technologies (ICT) or artificial intelligence (AI) allowed the creation of new types of services involving electronic devices with huge potential. The emergence of intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) is one of such potential example. Combining the IPA concept with the recent paradigm of Internet of Things (IoT), offers new possibilities and new services to end users, since they could learn more about other entities present in the surrounding environment. This paper proposes a novel mobile gateway solution for a ubiquitous mobile health scenario, in which information gathered from a body sensor network (BSN) is used by an IPA belonging to another person, typically mentioned to as caretaker. The mobile gateway receives real time information related to location, heart rate, and possible falls of the monitored person and acts as a communication channel between the BSN sensors and the IPA platform. Furthermore, the paper presents a performance evaluation study of the proposed mobile IoT-based gateway demonstrating and validating its feasibility.
