2019 Weakly-Supervised Action Localization With Background Modeling
abstract
We describe a latent approach that learns to detect actions in long sequences given training videos with only whole-video class labels. Our approach makes use of two innovations to attention-modeling in weakly-supervised learning. First, and most notably, our framework uses an attention model to extract both foreground and background frames whose appearance is explicitly modeled. Most prior works ignore the background, but we show that modeling it allows our system to learn a richer notion of actions and their temporal extents. Second, we combine bottom-up, class-agnostic attention modules with top-down, class-specific activation maps, using the latter as form of self-supervision for the former. Doing so allows our model to learn a more accurate model of attention without explicit temporal supervision. These modifications lead to 10% AP@IoU=0.5 improvement over existing systems on THUMOS14. Our proposed weaklysupervised system outperforms recent state-of-the-arts by at least 4.3% AP@IoU=0.5. Finally, we demonstrate that weakly-supervised learning can be used to aggressively scale-up learning to in-the-wild, uncurated Instagram videos. The addition of these videos significantly improves localization performance of our weakly-supervised model.

2018 Active Testing: An Efficient and Robust Framework for Estimating Accuracy
abstract
Much recent work on large-scale visual recogni- tion aims to scale up learning to massive, noisily- annotated datasets. We address the problem of scaling-up the evaluation of such models to large- scale datasets with noisy labels. Current protocols for doing so require a human user to either vet (re-annotate) a small fraction of the testset and ignore the rest, or else correct errors in annotation as they are found through manual inspection of results. In this work, we re-formulate the problem as one of active testing, and examine strategies for efficiently querying a user so as to obtain an accurate performance estimate with minimal vet- ting. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed active testing framework on estimating two performance metrics, Precision@K and mean Average Precisions, for two popular Computer Vi- sion tasks, multilabel classification and instance segmentation, respectively. We further show that our approach is able to siginificantly save human annotation effort and more robust than alterna- tive evaluation protocols.

2014 Video text detection and recognition: Dataset and benchmark
abstract
This paper focuses on the problem of text detection and recognition in videos. Even though text detection and recognition in images has seen much progress in recent years, relatively little work has been done to extend these solutions to the video domain. In this work, we extend an existing end-to-end solution for text recognition in natural images to video. We explore a variety of methods for training local character models and explore methods to capitalize on the temporal redundancy of text in video. We present detection performance using the Video Analysis and Content Extraction (VACE) benchmarking framework on the ICDAR 2013 Robust Reading Challenge 3 video dataset and on a new video text dataset. We also propose a new performance metric based on precision-recall curves to measure the performance of text recognition in videos. Using this metric, we provide early video text recognition results on the above mentioned datasets.
