2024 On the Correctness of Metadata-Based SBOM Generation: A Differential Analysis Approach
abstract
Amidst rising concerns of software supply chain attacks, the Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) has emerged as a pivotal tool, offering a detailed listing of software components to manage vulnerabilities, dependencies, and licensing. While many SBOM generation tools are extensively used in both commercial and open-source realms, the correctness of these tools remains largely unscrutinized. To date, there has not been a systematic study addressing the correctness of contemporary SBOM generation solutions. In this paper, we conduct a large-scale differential analysis of the correctness of four popular SBOM generators. Surprisingly, our evaluation reveals all four SBOM generators exhibit inconsistent SBOMs and dependency omissions, leading to incomplete and potentially inaccurate SBOMs. Moreover, we construct a parser confusion attack against these tools, introducing a new attack vector to conceal malicious, vulnerable, or illegal packages within the software supply chain. Drawing from our analysis, we propose best practices for SBOM generation and introduce a benchmark to steer the development of more robust SBOM generators.

2020 Chaser: An Enhanced Fault Injection Tool for Tracing Soft Errors in MPI Applications
abstract
Resilient computation has been an emerging topic in the field of high-performance computing (HPC). In particular, studies show that tolerating faults on leadership-class supercomputers (such as exascale supercomputers) is expected to be one of the main challenges. In this paper, we utilize dynamic binary instrumentation and virtual machine based fault injection to emulate soft errors and study the soft errors' impact on the behavior of applications. We propose Chaser, a fine-grained, accountable, flexible, and efficient fault injection framework built on top of QEMU. Chaser offers just-in-time fault injection, the ability to trace fault propagation, and flexible and programable interfaces. In the case study, we demonstrate the usage of Chaser on Matvec and a real DOE mini MPI application

2017 DECAF: A Platform-Neutral Whole-System Dynamic Binary Analysis Platform
abstract
Dynamic binary analysis is a prevalent and indispensable technique in program analysis. While several dynamic binary analysis tools and frameworks have been proposed, all suffer from one or more of: prohibitive performance degradation, a semantic gap between the analysis code and the program being analyzed, architecture/OS specificity, being user-mode only, and lacking APIs. We present DECAF, a virtual machine based, multi-target, whole-system dynamic binary analysis framework built on top of QEMU. DECAF provides Just-In-Time Virtual Machine Introspection and a plugin architecture with a simple-to-use event-driven programming interface. DECAF implements a new instruction-level taint tracking engine at bit granularity, which exercises fine control over the QEMU Tiny Code Generator (TCG) intermediate representation to accomplish on-the-fly optimizations while ensuring that the taint propagation is sound and highly precise. We perform a formal analysis of DECAF's taint propagation rules to verify that most instructions introduce neither false positives nor false negatives. We also present three platform-neutral plugins-Instruction Tracer, Keylogger Detector, and API Tracer, to demonstrate the ease of use and effectiveness of DECAF in writing cross-platform and system-wide analysis tools. Implementation of DECAF consists of 9,550 lines of C++ code and 10,270 lines of C code and we evaluate DECAF using CPU2006 SPEC benchmarks and show average overhead of 605 percent for system wide tainting and 12 percent for VMI.

2014 Code Injection Attacks on HTML5-based Mobile Apps: Characterization, Detection and Mitigation
abstract
Due to the portability advantage, HTML5-based mobile apps are getting more and more popular.Unfortunately, the web technology used by HTML5-based mobile apps has a dangerous feature, which allows data and code to be mixed together, making code injection attacks possible. In this paper, we have conducted a systematic study on this risk in HTML5-based mobile apps. We found a new form of code injection attack, which inherits the fundamental cause of Cross-Site Scripting attack~(XSS), but it uses many more channels to inject code than XSS. These channels, unique to mobile devices, include Contact, SMS, Barcode, MP3, etc. To assess the prevalence of the code injection vulnerability in HTML5-based mobile apps, we have developed a vulnerability detection tool to analyze 15,510 PhoneGap apps collected from Google Play. 478 apps are flagged as vulnerable, with only 2.30\% false-positive rate. We have also implemented a prototype called NoInjection as a Patch to PhoneGap in Android to defend against the attack.
