2025 Semantic Loss Guided Data Efficient Supervised Fine Tuning for Safe Responses in LLMs
abstract
Large Language Models (LLMs) generating unsafe responses to toxic prompts is a significant issue in their applications. While various efforts aim to address this safety concern, previous approaches often demand substantial human data collection or rely on the less dependable option of using another LLM to generate corrective data. In this paper, we aim to take this problem and overcome limitations of requiring significant high-quality human data. Our method requires only a small set of unsafe responses to toxic prompts, easily obtained from the unsafe LLM itself. By employing a semantic cost combined with a negative Earth Mover Distance (EMD) loss, we guide the LLM away from generating unsafe responses. Additionally, we propose a novel lower bound for EMD loss, enabling more efficient optimization. Our results demonstrate superior performance and data efficiency compared to baselines, and we further examine the nuanced effects of over-alignment and potential degradation of language capabilities when using contrastive data.

2024 Handling Long and Richly Constrained Tasks through Constrained Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning
abstract
Safety in goal directed Reinforcement Learning (RL) settings has typically been handled through constraints over trajectories and have demonstrated good performance in primarily short horizon tasks. In this paper, we are specifically interested in the problem of solving temporally extended decision making problems such as robots cleaning different areas in a house while avoiding slippery and unsafe areas (e.g., stairs) and retaining enough charge to move to a charging dock; in the presence of complex safety constraints. Our key contribution is a (safety) Constrained Search with Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning (CoSHRL) mechanism that combines an upper level constrained search agent (which computes a reward maximizing policy from a given start to a far away goal state while satisfying cost constraints) with a low-level goal conditioned RL agent (which estimates cost and reward values to move between nearby states). A major advantage of CoSHRL is that it can handle constraints on the cost value distribution (e.g., on Conditional Value at Risk, CVaR) and can adjust to flexible constraint thresholds without retraining. We perform extensive experiments with different types of safety constraints to demonstrate the utility of our approach over leading approaches in constrained and hierarchical RL.

2024 Age-Optimal Packet Scheduling With Resource Constraint and Feedback Delay
abstract
This paper considers the design of age-optimal packet scheduling policies in networks with delayed feedback, long-term resource constraint and various packet arrival models. The problem is formulated as a constrained partial observable Markov decision process (CPOMDP) in general. We first derive the achievable age of information (AoI) by the random and determined transmission policies, which works in the absence of feedback. Then, we propose a greedy policy that traces the expected receiver AoI based on the delayed feedback, and selects the action that minimizes the expected immediate Lagrange cost defined in the formulated CPOMDP. The proposed policy outperforms the existing policies for a wide range of feedback delay, even in the absence of feedback, yet the implementation complexity is still low since the decision threshold is derived in the closed-form, as a function of the network parameters.

2019 Learn to Gesture: Let Your Body Speak
abstract
Presentation is one of the most important and vivid methods to deliver information to audience. Apart from the content of presentation, how the speaker behaves during presentation makes a big difference. In other words, gestures, as part of the visual perception and synchronized with verbal information, express some subtle information that the voice or words alone cannot deliver. One of the most effective ways to improve presentation is to practice through feedback/suggestions by an expert. However, hiring human experts is expensive thus impractical most of the time. Towards this end, we propose a speech to gesture network (POSE) to generate exemplary body language given a vocal behavior speech as input. Specifically, we build an "expert" Speech-Gesture database based on the featured TED talk videos, and design a two-layer attentive recurrent encoder-decoder network to learn the translation from speech to gesture, as well as the hierarchical structure within gestures. Lastly, given a speech audio sequence, the appropriate gesture will be generated and visualized for a more effective communication. Both objective and subjective validation show the effectiveness of our proposed method.

2017 Solving NP-Hard Problems with Physarum-Based Ant Colony System
abstract
NP-hard problems exist in many real world applications. Ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithms can provide approximate solutions for those NP-hard problems, but the performance of ACO algorithms is significantly reduced due to premature convergence and weak robustness, etc. With these observations in mind, this paper proposes a Physarum-based pheromone matrix optimization strategy in ant colony system (ACS) for solving NP-hard problems such as traveling salesman problem (TSP) and 0/1 knapsack problem (0/1 KP). In the Physarum-inspired mathematical model, one of the unique characteristics is that critical tubes can be reserved in the process of network evolution. The optimized updating strategy employs the unique feature and accelerates the positive feedback process in ACS, which contributes to the quick convergence of the optimal solution. Some experiments were conducted using both benchmark and real datasets. The experimental results show that the optimized ACS outperforms other meta-heuristic algorithms in accuracy and robustness for solving TSPs. Meanwhile, the convergence rate and robustness for solving 0/1 KPs are better than those of classical ACS.
