| 2022 | PredictionNet: Real-Time Joint Probabilistic Traffic Prediction for Planning, Control, and SimulationabstractPredicting the future motion of traffic agents is crucial for safe and efficient autonomous driving. To this end, we present PredictionNet, a deep neural network (DNN) that predicts the motion of all surrounding traffic agents together with the ego-vehicle's motion. All predictions are probabilistic and are represented in a simple top-down rasterization that allows an arbitrary number of agents. Conditioned on a multi-layer map with lane information, the network outputs future positions, velocities, and backtrace vectors jointly for all agents including the ego-vehicle in a single pass. Trajectories are then extracted from the output. The network can be used to simulate realistic traffic, and it produces competitive results on popular benchmarks. More importantly, it has been used to successfully control a real-world vehicle for hundreds of kilometers, by combining it with a motion planning/control subsystem. The network runs faster than real-time on an embedded GPU, and the system shows good generalization (across sensory modalities and locations) due to the choice of input representation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that by extending the DNN with reinforcement learning (RL), it can better handle rare or unsafe events like aggressive maneuvers and crashes. | 2020 | Uncertainty-Aware Action Advising for Deep Reinforcement Learning AgentsabstractAlthough Reinforcement Learning (RL) has been one of the most successful approaches for learning in sequential decision making problems, the sample-complexity of RL techniques still represents a major challenge for practical applications. To combat this challenge, whenever a competent policy (e.g., either a legacy system or a human demonstrator) is available, the agent could leverage samples from this policy (advice) to improve sample-efficiency. However, advice is normally limited, hence it should ideally be directed to states where the agent is uncertain on the best action to execute. In this work, we propose Requesting Confidence-Moderated Policy advice (RCMP), an action-advising framework where the agent asks for advice when its epistemic uncertainty is high for a certain state. RCMP takes into account that the advice is limited and might be suboptimal. We also describe a technique to estimate the agent uncertainty by performing minor modifications in standard value-function-based RL methods. Our empirical evaluations show that RCMP performs better than Importance Advising, not receiving advice, and receiving it at random states in Gridworld and Atari Pong scenarios. | 2019 | Towers of Saliency: A Reinforcement Learning Visualization Using Immersive EnvironmentsabstractDeep reinforcement learning (DRL) has had many successes on complex tasks, but is typically considered a black box. Opening this black box would enable better understanding and trust of the model which can be helpful for researchers and end users to better interact with the learner. In this paper, we propose a new visualization to better analyze DRL agents and present a case study using the Pommerman benchmark domain. This visualization combines two previously proven methods for improving human understanding of systems: saliency mapping and immersive visualization. | 2016 | Monte Carlo Tree Search for Multi-Robot Task AllocationabstractMulti-robot teams are useful in a variety of task allocation domains such as warehouse automation and surveillance. Robots in such domains perform tasks at given locations and specific times, and are allocated tasks to optimize given team objectives. We propose an efficient, satisficing and centralized Monte Carlo TreeSearch based algorithm exploiting branch and bound paradigm to solve the multi-robot task allocation problem with spatial, temporal and other side constraints. Unlike previous heuristics proposed for this problem, our approach offers theoretical guarantees and finds optimal solutions for some non-trivial data sets. | 2015 | Stochastic Tree Search with Useful Cycles for patrolling problemsabstractAn autonomous robot team can be employed for continuous and strategic coverage of arbitrary environments for different missions. In this work, we propose an anytime approach for creating multi-robot patrolling policies. Our approach involves a novel extension of Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to allow robots to have life-long, cyclic policies so as to provide continual coverage of an environment. Our proposed method can generate near-optimal policies for a team of robots for small environments in real-time (and in larger environments in under a minute). By incorporating additional planning heuristics we are able to plan coordinated patrolling paths for teams of several robots in large environments quickly on commodity hardware.
