2025 Generative Planning with 3D-Vision Language Pre-training for End-to-End Autonomous Driving
abstract
Autonomous driving is a challenging task that requires perceiving and understanding the surrounding environment for safe trajectory planning. While existing vision-based end-to-end models have achieved promising results, these methods are still facing the challenges of vision understanding, decision reasoning and scene generalization. To solve these issues, a generative planning with 3D-vision language pre-training model named GPVL is proposed for end-to-end autonomous driving. The proposed paradigm has two significant aspects. On one hand, a 3D-vision language pre-training module is designed to bridge the gap between visual perception and linguistic understanding in the bird's eye view. On the other hand, a cross-modal language model is introduced to generate reasonable planning with perception and navigation information in an auto-regressive manner. Experiments on the challenging nuScenes dataset demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves excellent performances compared with state-of-the-art methods. Besides, the proposed GPVL presents strong generalization ability and real-time potential when handling high-level commands in various scenarios. It is believed that the effective, robust and efficient performance of GPVL is crucial for the practical application of future autonomous driving systems.

2025 Vision-Language Relational Transformer for Video-to-Text Generation
abstract
Video-to-text generation is a challenging task that involves translating video contents into accurate and expressive sentences. Existing methods often ignore the importance of establishing fine-grained semantics within visual representations and exploring textual knowledge implied by video contents, leading to difficulty in generating satisfactory sentences. To address these problems, a vision-language relational transformer model is proposed for video-to-text generation. Three key novel aspects are investigated. First, a visual relation modeling block is designed to obtain higher-order feature representations and establish semantic relationships between regional and global features. Second, a knowledge attention block is developed to explore hierarchical textual information and capture cross-modal dependencies. Third, a video-centric conversation system is constructed to complete multi-round dialogues by incorporating the proposed modules including visual relation modeling, knowledge attention and text generation. Extensive experiments on five benchmark datasets including MSVD, MSRVTT, ActivityNet, Charades and EMVPC demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves remarkable performance compared with the state-of-the-art methods. Besides, the qualitative experiment reveals the system's favorable conversation capability and provides a valuable exemplar for future video understanding works.

2024 Hybrid Graph Reasoning With Dynamic Interaction for Visual Dialog
abstract
As a pivotal branch of intelligent human-computer interaction, visual dialog is a technically challenging task that requires artificial intelligence (AI) agents to answer consecutive questions based on image content and history dialog. Despite considerable progresses, visual dialog still suffers from two major problems: (1) how to design flexible cross-modal interaction patterns instead of over-reliance on expert experience and (2) how to infer underlying semantic dependencies between dialogues effectively. To address these issues, an end-to-end framework employing dynamic interaction and hybrid graph reasoning is proposed in this work. Specifically, three major components are designed and the practical benefits are demonstrated by extensive experiments. First, a dynamic interaction module is developed to automatically determine the optimal modality interaction route for multifarious questions, which consists of three elaborate functional interaction blocks endowed with dynamic routers. Second, a hybrid graph reasoning module is designed to explore adequate semantic associations between dialogues from multiple perspectives, where the hybrid graph is constructed by aggregating a structured coreference graph and a context-aware temporal graph. Third, a unified one-stage visual dialog model with an end-to-end structure is developed to train the dynamic interaction module and the hybrid graph reasoning module in a collaborative manner. Extensive experiments on the benchmark datasets of VisDial v0.9 and VisDial v1.0 demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method compared to other state-of-the-art approaches. 2023 Knowledge-Enriched Attention Network With Group-Wise Semantic for Visual Storytelling
abstract
As a technically challenging topic, visual storytelling aims at generating an imaginary and coherent story with narrative multi-sentences from a group of relevant images. Existing methods often generate direct and rigid descriptions of apparent image-based contents, because they are not capable of exploring implicit information beyond images. Hence, these schemes could not capture consistent dependencies from holistic representation, impairing the generation of reasonable and fluent stories. To address these problems, a novel knowledge-enriched attention network with group-wise semantic model is proposed. Three main novel components are designed and supported by substantial experiments to reveal practical advantages. First, a knowledge-enriched attention network is designed to extract implicit concepts from external knowledge system, and these concepts are followed by a cascade cross-modal attention mechanism to characterize imaginative and concrete representations. Second, a group-wise semantic module with second-order pooling is developed to explore the globally consistent guidance. Third, a unified one-stage story generation model with encoder-decoder structure is proposed to simultaneously train and infer the knowledge-enriched attention network, group-wise semantic module and multi-modal story generation decoder in an end-to-end fashion. Substantial experiments on the visual storytelling datasets with both objective and subjective evaluation metrics demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme as compared with other state-of-the-art methods. 2022 Re-Thinking Co-Salient Object Detection
abstract
In this article, we conduct a comprehensive study on the co-salient object detection (CoSOD) problem for images. CoSOD is an emerging and rapidly growing extension of salient object detection (SOD), which aims to detect the co-occurring salient objects in a group of images. However, existing CoSOD datasets often have a serious data bias, assuming that each group of images contains salient objects of similar visual appearances. This bias can lead to the ideal settings and effectiveness of models trained on existing datasets, being impaired in real-life situations, where similarities are usually semantic or conceptual. To tackle this issue, we first introduce a new benchmark, called CoSOD3k in the wild, which requires a large amount of semantic context, making it more challenging than existing CoSOD datasets. Our CoSOD3k consists of 3,316 high-quality, elaborately selected images divided into 160 groups with hierarchical annotations. The images span a wide range of categories, shapes, object sizes, and backgrounds. Second, we integrate the existing SOD techniques to build a unified, trainable CoSOD framework, which is long overdue in this field. Specifically, we propose a novel CoEG-Net that augments our prior model EGNet with a co-attention projection strategy to enable fast common information learning. CoEG-Net fully leverages previous large-scale SOD datasets and significantly improves the model scalability and stability. Third, we comprehensively summarize 40 cutting-edge algorithms, benchmarking 18 of them over three challenging CoSOD datasets (iCoSeg, CoSal2015, and our CoSOD3k), and reporting more detailed (i.e., group-level) performance analysis. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future works of CoSOD. We hope that our study will give a strong boost to growth in the CoSOD community. The benchmark toolbox and results are available on our project page at https://dpfan.net/CoSOD3K.

2022 Image Co-Saliency Detection and Instance Co-Segmentation Using Attention Graph Clustering Based Graph Convolutional Network
abstract
Co-Saliency Detection (CSD) is to explore the concurrent patterns and salient objects from a group of relevant images, while Instance Co-Segmentation (ICS) aims to identify and segment out all of these co-salient instances, generating corresponding mask for each instance. To simultaneously tackle these two tasks, we present a novel adaptive graph convolutional network with attention graph clustering (GCAGC) for CSD and ICS, termed as GCAGC-CSD and GCAGC-ICS, respectively. The GCAGC-CSD contains three key model designs: first, we develop a graph convolutional network architecture to extract multi-scale representations to characterize the intra- and inter-image consistency. Second, we propose an attention graph clustering algorithm to distinguish the salient foreground objects from common areas in an unsupervised manner. Third, we present a unified framework with encoder-decoder structure to jointly train and optimize the graph convolutional network, attention graph cluster, and CSD decoder in an end-to-end fashion. Afterwards, we design a salient instance segmentation network for GCAGC-ICS, and combine the outputs of GCAGC-CSD and the instance segmentation branch to obtain instance-aware co-segmentation masks. The proposed GCAGC-CSD and GCAGC-ICS are extensively evaluated on four CSD benchmark datasets (iCoseg, Cosal2015, COCO-SEG and CoSOD3k) and five ICS benchmark datasets (CoSOD3k, COCO-NONVOC, COCO-VOC, VOC12 and SOC), and achieve superior performance over state-of-the-arts on both tasks.

2021 SNIS: Storage-Network Iterative Simulation for Disaggregated Storage Systems
abstract
In recent years, designs and optimizations on disaggregated storage systems supported by cutting-edge storage and network techniques emerge dramatically. However, conducting experiments in a disaggregated architecture is often expensive. A comprehensive modeling system of disaggregated storage systems is indispensable for researchers to construct fast and reliable experiments. Modeling and evaluating the performance of disaggregated storage systems is a challenge for the following reasons. First, the performance of a disaggregated storage system depends on network protocols and storage solutions jointly. Second, the available trace datasets for generating the workload may not suffice the need for the simulation, as they are collected without considering the integration of network delay and storage processing time. This work proposes a storage-network iterative simulation (SNIS) for disaggregated storage systems by considering the issues above. Our simulation methodology integrates storage and network simulations to model the end-to-end performance of disaggregated storage systems and conducts multiple rounds of simulations to update arrival times of read/write requests. The evaluation results show that SNIS can converge to a relatively stable state after a certain number of iterations.

2021 CODS: Cloud-assisted Object Detection for Streaming Videos on Edge Devices
abstract
The advance of hardware has allowed edge devices to carry out varying applications, including computation-intensive machine learning tasks. This paper targets a real-time application of detecting objects on streaming videos with a tightened requirement on processing overhead. While the edge device still lacks the computation power to apply the object detection algorithm on every video frame, this paper integrates cloud-side servers in the solution as much prior work has attempted. However, our design is different from the conventional off-loading solutions that delegate the computation tasks to the cloud servers. We present a solution named CODS where the computation tasks are still conducted by the edge devices while the cloud server provides useful guidelines for choosing appropriate analysis algorithms. We implement our solution with the Jetson Nano device and evaluate it with videos from representative datasets. The results show that CODS is quite effective and superior to baseline alternatives.

2020 Adaptive Graph Convolutional Network With Attention Graph Clustering for Co-Saliency Detection
abstract
Co-saliency detection aims to discover the common and salient foregrounds from a group of relevant images. For this task, we present a novel adaptive graph convolutional network with attention graph clustering (GCAGC). Three major contributions have been made, and are experimentally shown to have substantial practical merits. First, we propose a graph convolutional network design to extract information cues to characterize the intra- and inter-image correspondence. Second, we develop an attention graph clustering algorithm to discriminate the common objects from all the salient foreground objects in an unsupervised fashion. Third, we present a unified framework with encoder-decoder structure to jointly train and optimize the graph convolutional network, attention graph cluster, and co-saliency detection decoder in an end-to-end manner. We evaluate our proposed GCAGC method on three co-saliency detection benchmark datasets (iCoseg, Cosal2015 and COCO-SEG). Our GCAGC method obtains significant improvements over the state-of-the-arts on most of them.

2020 PROMAR: Practical Reference Object-based Multi-user Augmented Reality
abstract
Augmented reality (AR) is an emerging technology that weaves virtual objects into physical environments, and enables users to interact with them through viewing devices. This paper targets on multi-user AR applications, where virtual objects (VOs) placed by a user can be viewed by other users. We develop a practical framework that supports the basic multi-user AR functions of placing and viewing VOs, and our system can be deployed on off-the-shelf smartphones without special hardware. The main technical challenge we address is that when facing the exact same scene, the user who places the VO and the user who views the VO may have different view angles and distances to the scene. This setting is realistic and the traditional solutions yield a poor performance in terms of the accuracy. In this work, we have developed a suite of algorithms that help the viewers accurately identify the same scene and restore the VO under a moderate range of view angle difference. We have prototyped our system, and the experimental results have shown significant performance improvements. Our source codes and demos can be accessed at https://github.com/PROMAR2019.

2019 Co-Saliency Detection via Mask-Guided Fully Convolutional Networks With Multi-Scale Label Smoothing
abstract
In image co-saliency detection problem, one critical issue is how to model the concurrent pattern of the co-salient parts, which appears both within each image and across all the relevant images. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical image co-saliency detection framework as a coarse to fine strategy to capture this pattern. We first propose a mask-guided fully convolutional network structure to generate the initial co-saliency detection result. The mask is used for background removal and it is learned from the high-level feature response maps of the pre-trained VGG-net output. We next propose a multi-scale label smoothing model to further refine the detection result. The proposed model jointly optimizes the label smoothness of pixels and superpixels. Experiment results on three popular image co-saliency detection benchmark datasets including iCoseg, MSRC and Cosal2015 demonstrate the remarkable performance compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

2018 owlBIT: Orchestrating Wireless Transmissions for Launching Big Data Platforms in an Internet of Things Environment
abstract
The emergence of Edge Computing and the success of Internet of Thing and (IoT) has tremendously changed the way we think about data computing. With edge devices changing from data producer to both data producer and consumer, the chance for processing large data sets with Big Data on a cloud of IoT devices is more realistic. In Big Data systems such as Hadoop-Yarn, Spark, Pig, etc., the shuffling stage is by far the most dominant source of network traffic. Unreliable performance of network will greatly impact the shuffling process. Since IoT devices mostly rely on wireless network based on 802.11, providing proper throughput to big data computing system is an important challenge that needs to be address. In this paper, we argue that a cluster of IoT computers can support big data by considering the information fed by the big data applications. We propose a cross-layer framework that uses the application layer information to guide the packet scheduling at the link layer. We implement our system as an extension module in Hadoop-Yarn system. The experimental evaluation shows significant performance improvement.

2018 RoVEr: Robust and Verifiable Erasure Code for Hadoop Distributed File Systems
abstract
Erasure Coding based Storage (ECS) is replacing tradition replica-based systems because of its low storage overhead. In an ECS, however, every task needs to fetch remote pieces of data for its execution, and data verification is missing in the current framework. As security issues keep rising and there have been security incidents occurred in big data platforms, the compromised nodes in a computing cluster may manipulate its hosted data fed for other nodes yielding misleading results. Without replicas, it is quite challenging to efficiently verify the data integrity in ECS. In this paper, we develop ROVER, which is an efficient and verifiable ECS for big data platforms. In ROVER, every piece of data is monitored by its checksums stored on a set of witnesses. Bloom filter technique is used on each witness to efficiently keep the records of the checksums. The data verification is based on the majority voting. ROVER also supports a quick reconstruction of Bloom Filter when a node recovers from a failure. We present a complete system framework, security analysis, and a guideline for setting the parameters. The implementation and evaluation show that ROVER is robust and efficient against the attack from the compromised nodes.

2015 MALBACsim: A Multiple Annealing and Looping Based Amplification Cycles simulator
abstract
Single cell sequencing provides revolutionary insight into genomic heterogeneity at the molecular level. A key procedure for successful sequencing is whole genome amplification (WGA) that permits the genomic DNA of a single cell to be amplified by several orders of magnitude. A very recently reported WGA method, Multiple Annealing and Loop-Based Amplification Cycles (MALBAC), distinguished itself by providing uniformity of amplification across the genome with low amplification bias. However, MALBAC still has limitations. For example, the polymerase enzyme is prone to introduce errors and a large proportion of single-nucleotide variations are lost. The complex biological reactions involved in MALBAC are largely unaddressed and no systematic analysis for it has been reported. To reduce both the labor and costs involved in MALBAC, we have developed a computer simulation for MALBAC. By capturing several key variables, MALBAC was formulated by a mathematical model and simulated. We compared the simulated data with empirical sequencing data of Escherichia coli genomes. The experimental results demonstrated that the coverage distribution matches very well. We believe that the proposed simulator can provide both theoretical guidance and experimental cross-validation for MALBAC, thus aiding improvement of its performance.
