| 2026 | TransFace++: Rethinking the Face Recognition Paradigm With a Focus on Accuracy, Efficiency, and SecurityabstractFace Recognition (FR) technology has made significant strides with the emergence of deep learning. Typically, most existing FR models are built upon Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and take RGB face images as the model's input. In this work, we take a closer look at existing FR paradigms from high-efficiency, security, and precision perspectives, and identify the following three problems: (i) CNN frameworks are vulnerable in capturing global facial features and modeling the correlations between local facial features. (ii) Selecting RGB face images as the model's input greatly degrades the model's inference efficiency, increasing the extra computation costs. (iii) In the real-world FR system that operates on RGB face images, the integrity of user privacy may be compromised if hackers successfully penetrate and gain access to the input of this model. To solve these three issues, we propose two novel FR frameworks, i.e., TransFace and TransFace++, which successfully explore the feasibility of applying ViTs and image bytes to FR tasks, respectively. Firstly, as revealed from our observations, we find that ViTs perform vulnerably when applied to FR scenarios with extremely large datasets. We investigate the reasons for this phenomenon and discover that the existing data augmentation approaches and hard sample mining strategies are incompatible with ViTs-based FR backbone due to the lack of tailored consideration on preserving face structural information and leveraging each local token information. To remedy these problems, we first propose a superior FR model called TransFace, which contains a patch-level data augmentation strategy named Dominant Patch Amplitude Perturbation (DPAP) and a hard sample mining strategy named Entropy-guided Hard Sample Mining (EHSM). Furthermore, to improve inference efficiency and user privacy protection, we investigate the intrinsic property of image bytes and propose a superior FR model termed TransFace++. The proposed model is trained directly on image bytes, presenting a novel approach to address the aforementioned issues. Specifically, considering the importance of local correlations in bytes, an image bytes compression strategy named Topology-based Image Bytes Compression (TIBC) is introduced to extract prominent features from the raw bytes and integrate these features with byte embeddings, effectively mitigating information loss during the bytes mapping process. Moreover, to strengthen the model's perception on geometric information encoded in image bytes, a novel cross-attention module named Structure Information-guided Cross-Attention (SICA) is designed to inject structure information into byte tokens for information interaction, significantly improving the model's generalization ability. Experiments on popular face benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our TransFace and TransFace++. Jun Dan, Yang Liu 0356, Baigui Sun, Jiankang Deng, Shan Luo 0001 |

| 2025 | LLM4GEN: Leveraging Semantic Representation of LLMs for Text-to-Image GenerationabstractDiffusion models have exhibited substantial success in text-to-image generation. However, they often encounter challenges when dealing with complex and dense prompts involving multiple objects, attribute binding, and long descriptions. In this paper, we propose a novel framework called LLM4GEN, which enhances the semantic understanding of text-to-image diffusion models by leveraging the representation of Large Language Models (LLMs). It can be seamlessly incorporated into various diffusion models as a plug-and-play component. A specially designed Cross-Adapter Module (CAM) integrates the original text features of text-to-image models with LLM features, thereby enhancing text-to-image generation. Additionally, to facilitate and correct entity-attribute relationships in text prompts, we develop an entity-guided regularization loss to further improve generation performance. We also introduce DensePrompts, which contains 7,000 dense prompts to provide a comprehensive evaluation for the text-to-image generation task. Experiments indicate that LLM4GEN significantly improves the semantic alignment of SD1.5 and SDXL, demonstrating increases of 9.69% and 12.90% in color on T2I-CompBench, respectively. Moreover, it surpasses existing models in terms of sample quality, image-text alignment, and human evaluation. Mushui Liu, Jun Dan, Zeng Zhao, Zhipeng Hu, Bai Liu 0002, Changjie Fan |

| 2025 | Distinguish Then Exploit: Source-free Open Set Domain Adaptation via Weight Barcode Estimation and Sparse Label AssignmentabstractNowadays, domain adaptation techniques have been widely investigated for knowledge sharing from labeled source domain to unlabeled target domain. However, target domain may include some data samples that belong to unknown categories in real-world scenarios. Moreover, the target domain cannot access the source data samples due to privacy-preserving restrictions. In this paper, we focus on the source-free open set domain adaptation problem which includes two main challenges, i.e., how to distinguish known and unknown target samples and how to exploit useful source information to provide trustworthy pseudo labels for known target samples. Existing approaches that directly apply conventional domain alignment methods could lead to sample mismatch and misclassification in this scenario. To overcome these issues, we propose a Distinguish Then Exploit model (DTE) with two components, i.e., weight barcode estimation and sparse label assignment. Weight barcode estimation first calculates the marginal probability of target samples via partially unbalanced optimal transport, then quantize barcode results to distinguish unknown target samples. Sparse label assignment utilizes sparse sample-label matching via proximal term to fully exploit useful source information. Our empirically study on several datasets shows that DTE outperforms the state-of-the-art models on tackling the source-free open set domain adaptation problem. | 2025 | Solving Discrete (Semi) Unbalanced Optimal Transport with Equivalent Transformation Mechanism and KKT-Multiplier RegularizationabstractSemi-Unbalanced Optimal Transport (SemiUOT) shows great promise in matching two probability measures by relaxing one of the marginal constraints. Previous solvers often incorporate an entropy regularization term, which can result in inaccurate matching solutions. To address this issue, we focus on determining the marginal probability distribution of SemiUOT with KL divergence using the proposed Equivalent Transformation Mechanism (ETM) approach. Furthermore, we extend the ETM-based method into exploiting the marginal probability distribution of Unbalanced Optimal Transport (UOT) with KL divergence for validating its generalization. Once the marginal probabilities of UOT/SemiUOT are determined, they can be transformed into a classical Optimal Transport (OT) problem. Moreover, we propose a KKT-Multiplier regularization term combined with Multiplier Regularized Optimal Transport (MROT) to achieve more accurate matching results. We conduct several numerical experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed methods in addressing UOT/SemiUOT problems. | 2024 | FaceChain-ImagineID: Freely Crafting High-Fidelity Diverse Talking Faces from Disentangled AudioabstractIn this paper, we abstract the process of people hearing speech, extracting meaningful cues, and creating vari-ous dynamically audio-consistent talking faces, termed Lis-tening and Imagining, into the task of high-fidelity diverse talking faces generation from a single audio. Specifically, it involves two critical challenges: one is to effectively de-couple identity, content, and emotion from entangled au-dio, and the other is to maintain intra-video diversity and inter- video consistency. To tackle the issues, we first dig out the intricate relationships among facial factors and sim-plify the decoupling process, tailoring a Progressive Audio Disentanglement for accurate facial geometry and seman-tics learning, where each stage incorporates a customized training module responsible for a specific factor. Secondly, to achieve visually diverse and audio-synchronized animation solely from input audio within a single model, we intro-duce the Controllable Coherent Frame generation, which involves the flexible integration of three trainable adapters with frozen Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) to focus on maintaining facial geometry and semantics, as well as texsture and temporal coherence between frames. In this way, we inherit high-quality diverse generation from LDMs while significantly improving their controllability at a low training cost. Extensive experiments demonstrate the flexibility and effectiveness of our method in handling this paradigm. The codes will be released at FaceChain. | 2024 | HOGDA: Boosting Semi-supervised Graph Domain Adaptation via High-Order Structure-Guided Adaptive Feature AlignmentabstractSemi-supervised graph domain adaptation, as a subfield of graph transfer learning, seeks to precisely annotate unlabeled target graph nodes by leveraging transferable features acquired from the limited labeled source nodes. However, most existing studies often directly utilize graph convolutional networks (GCNs)-based feature extractors to capture domain-invariant node features, while neglecting the issue that GCNs are insufficient in collecting complex structure information in graph. Considering the importance of graph structure information in encoding the complex relationship among nodes and edges, this paper aims to utilize such powerful information to assist graph transfer learning. To achieve this goal, we develop a novel framework called HOGDA. Concretely, HOGDA introduces a high-order structure information mixing (HSIM) module to effectively capture abundant structure information in graph, greatly enhancing the feature extractor's ability to adapt across different domains. Moreover, to achieve fine-grained feature distributions alignment, a novel strategy called adaptive weighted domain alignment (AWDA) is proposed to dynamically adjust the node weight during adversarial domain adaptation process, effectively boosting the model's transfer ability. Furthermore, to mitigate the overfitting phenomenon caused by limited source labeled nodes, we also design a trust-aware node clustering (TNC) strategy to guide the unlabeled nodes to achieve discriminative clustering. Extensive experimental results show that our HOGDA outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on various transfer tasks. | 2024 | TFGDA: Exploring Topology and Feature Alignment in Semi-supervised Graph Domain Adaptation through Robust ClusteringabstractSemi-supervised graph domain adaptation, as a branch of graph transfer learning, aims to annotate unlabeled target graph nodes by utilizing transferable knowledge learned from a label-scarce source graph. However, most existing studies primarily concentrate on aligning feature distributions directly to extract domain-invariant features, while ignoring the utilization of the intrinsic structure information in graphs. Inspired by the significance of data structure information in enhancing models' generalization performance, this paper aims to investigate how to leverage the structure information to assist graph transfer learning. To this end, we propose an innovative framework called TFGDA. Specially, TFGDA employs a structure alignment strategy named STSA to encode graphs' topological structure information into the latent space, greatly facilitating the learning of transferable features. To achieve a stable alignment of feature distributions, we also introduce a SDA strategy to mitigate domain discrepancy on the sphere. Moreover, to address the overfitting issue caused by label scarcity, a simple but effective RNC strategy is devised to guide the discriminative clustering of unlabeled nodes. Experiments on various benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of TFGDA over SOTA methods. Jun Dan, Weiming Liu 0005, Chunfeng Xie, Hua Yu 0006, Shunjie Dong, Yanchao Tan |

| 2024 | TopoFR: A Closer Look at Topology Alignment on Face RecognitionabstractThe field of face recognition (FR) has undergone significant advancements with the rise of deep learning. Recently, the success of unsupervised learning and graph neural networks has demonstrated the effectiveness of data structure information. Considering that the FR task can leverage large-scale training data, which intrinsically contains significant structure information, we aim to investigate how to encode such critical structure information into the latent space. As revealed from our observations, directly aligning the structure information between the input and latent spaces inevitably suffers from an overfitting problem, leading to a structure collapse phenomenon in the latent space. To address this problem, we propose TopoFR, a novel FR model that leverages a topological structure alignment strategy called PTSA and a hard sample mining strategy named SDE. Concretely, PTSA uses persistent homology to align the topological structures of the input and latent spaces, effectively preserving the structure information and improving the generalization performance of FR model. To mitigate the impact of hard samples on the latent space structure, SDE accurately identifies hard samples by automatically computing structure damage score (SDS) for each sample, and directs the model to prioritize optimizing these samples. Experimental results on popular face benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our TopoFR over the state-of-the-art methods. | 2023 | TransFace: Calibrating Transformer Training for Face Recognition from a Data-Centric PerspectiveabstractVision Transformers (ViTs) have demonstrated powerful representation ability in various visual tasks thanks to their intrinsic data-hungry nature. However, we unexpectedly find that ViTs perform vulnerably when applied to face recognition (FR) scenarios with extremely large datasets. We investigate the reasons for this phenomenon and discover that the existing data augmentation approach and hard sample mining strategy are incompatible with ViTs-based FR backbone due to the lack of tailored consideration on preserving face structural information and leveraging each local token information. To remedy these problems, this paper proposes a superior FR model called TransFace, which employs a patch-level data augmentation strategy named DPAP and a hard sample mining strategy named EHSM. Specially, DPAP randomly perturbs the amplitude information of dominant patches to expand sample diversity, which effectively alleviates the overfitting problem in ViTs. EHSM utilizes the information entropy in the local tokens to dynamically adjust the importance weight of easy and hard samples during training, leading to a more stable prediction. | 2014 | A model-free approach for detecting interactions in genetic association studiesabstractOver the past few decades, genome-wide association studies analyzed by efficient statistical procedures have successfully identified single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that are associated with complex traits or human diseases. However, due to the overwhelming number of SNPs, most approaches have focused on additive genetic model without genome-wide SNP-SNP interactions. In this study, we propose an efficient statistical procedure in a genetic model-free framework for detecting SNPs exhibiting main genetic effects as well as epistatic interactions. Specifically, the association between phenotype and genotype is characterized by an unknown function to be estimated using nonparametric techniques, and a two-stage non-parametric independence screening procedure is proposed to sequentially identify potentially important main genetic effects and interactions. Finally, the subset of genetic predictors implied by two-stage non-parametric independence screening is analyzed by penalized regressions such as LASSO, and a final model is identified. In this framework, specific genetic model is not assumed and interactions are not only among marginally important SNPs. Therefore, SNPs that are involved in genetic regulatory networks but missed by previous studies are expected to be recognized. In simulation studies, we show that the procedure is computationally efficient and has an outstanding finite sample performance in selecting potential SNPs as well as SNP-SNP interactions. A real data analysis further indicates the importance of epistatic interactions in explaining body mass index. Jiahan Li, Jun Dan, Chunlei Li 0006, Rongling Wu |
