| 2023 | DeCo: Decomposition and Reconstruction for Compositional Temporal Grounding via Coarse-to-Fine Contrastive RankingabstractUnderstanding dense action in videos is a fundamental challenge towards the generalization of vision models. Several works show that compositionality is key to achieving generalization by combining known primitive elements, especially for handling novel composited structures. Compositional temporal grounding is the task of localizing dense action by using known words combined in novel ways in the form of novel query sentences for the actual grounding. In recent works, composition is assumed to be learned from pairs of whole videos and language embeddings through large scale self-supervised pre-training. Alternatively, one can process the video and language into word-level primitive elements, and then only learn fine-grained semantic correspondences. Both approaches do not consider the granularity of the compositions, where different query granularity corresponds to different video segments. Therefore, a good compositional representation should be sensitive to different video and query granularity. We propose a method to learn a coarse-to-fine compositional representation by decomposing the original query sentence into different granular levels, and then learning the correct correspondences between the video and recombined queries through a contrastive ranking constraint. Additionally, we run temporal boundary prediction in a coarse-to-fine manner for precise grounding boundary detection. Experiments are performed on two datasets, Charades-CG and ActivityNet-CG, showing the superior compositional generalizability of our approach. | 2020 | Autolabeling 3D Objects With Differentiable Rendering of SDF Shape PriorsabstractWe present an automatic annotation pipeline to recover 9D cuboids and 3D shapes from pre-trained off-the-shelf 2D detectors and sparse LIDAR data. Our autolabeling method solves an ill-posed inverse problem by considering learned shape priors and optimizing geometric and physical parameters. To address this challenging problem, we apply a novel differentiable shape renderer to signed distance fields (SDF), leveraged together with normalized object coordinate spaces (NOCS). Initially trained on synthetic data to predict shape and coordinates, our method uses these predictions for projective and geometric alignment over real samples. Moreover, we also propose a curriculum learning strategy, iteratively retraining on samples of increasing difficulty in subsequent self-improving annotation rounds. Our experiments on the KITTI3D dataset show that we can recover a substantial amount of accurate cuboids, and that these autolabels can be used to train 3D vehicle detectors with state-of-the-art results. | 2019 | ROI-10D: Monocular Lifting of 2D Detection to 6D Pose and Metric ShapeabstractWe present a deep learning method for end-to-end monocular 3D object detection and metric shape retrieval. We propose a novel loss formulation by lifting 2D detection, orientation, and scale estimation into 3D space. Instead of optimizing these quantities separately, the 3D instantiation allows to properly measure the metric misalignment of boxes. We experimentally show that our 10D lifting of sparse 2D Regions of Interests (RoIs) achieves great results both for 6D pose and recovery of the textured metric geometry of instances. This further enables 3D synthetic data augmentation via inpainting recovered meshes directly onto the 2D scenes. We evaluate on KITTI3D against other strong monocular methods and demonstrate that our approach doubles the AP on the 3D pose metrics on the official test set, defining the new state of the art. | 2019 | DeceptionNet: Network-Driven Domain RandomizationabstractWe present a novel approach to tackle domain adaptation between synthetic and real data. Instead, of employing "blind" domain randomization, i.e., augmenting synthetic renderings with random backgrounds or changing illumination and colorization, we leverage the task network as its own adversarial guide toward useful augmentations that maximize the uncertainty of the output. To this end, we design a min-max optimization scheme where a given task competes against a special deception network to minimize the task error subject to the specific constraints enforced by the deceiver. The deception network samples from a family of differentiable pixel-level perturbations and exploits the task architecture to find the most destructive augmentations. Unlike GAN-based approaches that require unlabeled data from the target domain, our method achieves robust mappings that scale well to multiple target distributions from source data alone. We apply our framework to the tasks of digit recognition on enhanced MNIST variants, classification and object pose estimation on the Cropped LineMOD dataset as well as semantic segmentation on the Cityscapes dataset and compare it to a number of domain adaptation approaches, thereby demonstrating similar results with superior generalization capabilities. | 2017 | Real-Time 3D Model Tracking in Color and Depth on a Single CPU CoreabstractWe present a novel method to track 3D models in color and depth data. To this end, we introduce approximations that accelerate the state-of-the-art in region-based tracking by an order of magnitude while retaining similar accuracy. Furthermore, we show how the method can be made more robust in the presence of depth data and consequently formulate a new joint contour and ICP tracking energy. We present better results than the state-of-the-art while being much faster then most other methods and achieving all of the above on a single CPU core. | 2017 | SSD-6D: Making RGB-Based 3D Detection and 6D Pose Estimation Great AgainabstractWe present a novel method for detecting 3D model instances and estimating their 6D poses from RGB data in a single shot. To this end, we extend the popular SSD paradigm to cover the full 6D pose space and train on synthetic model data only. Our approach competes or surpasses current state-of-the-art methods that leverage RGBD data on multiple challenging datasets. Furthermore, our method produces these results at around 10Hz, which is many times faster than the related methods. For the sake of reproducibility, we make our trained networks and detection code publicly available. Wadim Kehl, Fabian Manhardt, Federico Tombari, Slobodan Ilic, Nassir Navab |

| 2017 | 3D object instance recognition and pose estimation using triplet loss with dynamic marginabstractIn this paper, we address the problem of 3D object instance recognition and pose estimation of localized objects in cluttered environments using convolutional neural networks. Inspired by the descriptor learning approach of Wohlhart et al. [1], we propose a method that introduces the dynamic margin in the manifold learning triplet loss function. Such a loss function is designed to map images of different objects under different poses to a lower-dimensional, similarity-preserving descriptor space on which efficient nearest neighbor search algorithms can be applied. Introducing the dynamic margin allows for faster training times and better accuracy of the resulting low-dimensional manifolds. Furthermore, we contribute the following: adding in-plane rotations (ignored by the baseline method) to the training, proposing new background noise types that help to better mimic realistic scenarios and improve accuracy with respect to clutter, adding surface normals as another powerful image modality representing an object surface leading to better performance than merely depth, and finally implementing an efficient online batch generation that allows for better variability during the training phase. We perform an exhaustive evaluation to demonstrate the effects of our contributions. Additionally, we assess the performance of the algorithm on the large BigBIRD dataset [2] to demonstrate good scalability properties of the pipeline with respect to the number of models. | 2015 | Hashmod: A Hashing Method for Scalable 3D Object DetectionabstractWe present a scalable method for detecting objects and estimating their 3D poses in RGB-D data. To this end, we rely on an efficient representation of object views and employ hashing techniques to match these views against the input frame in a scalable way. While a similar approach already exists for 2D detection, we show how to extend it to estimate the 3D pose of the detected objects. In particular, we explore different hashing strategies and identify the one which is more suitable to our problem. We show empirically that the complexity of our method is sublinear with the number of objects and we enable detection and pose estimation of many 3D objects with high accuracy while outperforming the state-of-the-art in terms of runtime. | 2015 | Universal Hough dictionaries for object trackingabstractWe propose a novel approach to online visual tracking that combines the robustness of sparse coding with the flexibility of voting-based methods. Our algorithm relies on a dictionary that is learned once and for all from a large set of training patches extracted from images unrelated to the test sequences. In this way we obtain basis functions, also known as atoms, that can be sparsely combined to reconstruct local image content. In order to adapt the generic knowledge encoded in the dictionary to the specific object being tracked, we associate a set of votes and local object appearances to each atom: this is the only information being updated during online tracking. In each frame of the sequence the object's bounding box position is retrieved through a voting strategy. Our method exhibits robustness towards occlusions, sudden local and global illumination changes as well as shape changes. We test our method on 50 standard sequences obtaining results comparable or superior to the state of the art. | 2015 | Augmenting Mobile C-arm Fluoroscopes via Stereo-RGBD Sensors for Multimodal VisualizationabstractFusing intraoperative X-ray data with real-time video in a common reference frame is not trivial since both modalities have to be acquired from the same viewpoint. The goal of this work is to design a flexible system comprising two RGBD sensors that can be attached to any mobile C-arm, with the objective of synthesizing projective color images from the X-ray source viewpoint. To achieve this, we calibrate the RGBD sensors to the X-ray source with a 3D calibration object. Then, we synthesize the projective color image from the X-ray viewpoint by applying a volumetric-based rendering method. Finally, the X-ray image is overlaid on the projective image without any further registration, offering a multimodal visualization of X-ray and color images. In this paper we present the different steps of development (i.e. hardware setup, calibration and rendering algorithm) and discuss clinical applications for the new video augmented C-arm. By placing X-ray markers on a hand patient and a spine model, we show that the overlay accuracy between the X-ray image and the synthetized image is in average 1.7 mm.
