2026 Tessellation GS: Neural Mesh Gaussians for Robust Monocular Reconstruction of Dynamic Objects
abstract
3D Gaussian Splatting (GS) enables highly photorealistic scene reconstruction from posed image sequences but struggles with viewpoint extrapolation due to its anisotropic nature, leading to overfitting and poor generalization, particularly in sparse-view and dynamic scene reconstruction. We propose Tessellation GS, a structured 2D GS approach anchored on mesh faces, to reconstruct dynamic scenes from a single continuously moving or static camera. Our method constrains 2D Gaussians to localized regions and infers their attributes via hierarchical neural features on mesh faces. Gaussian subdivision is guided by an adaptive face subdivision strategy driven by a detail-aware loss function. Additionally, we leverage priors from a reconstruction foundation model to initialize Gaussian deformations, enabling robust reconstruction of general dynamic objects from a single static camera, previously extremely challenging for optimization-based methods. Our method outperforms previous SOTA method, reducing LPIPS by 29.1% and Chamfer distance by 49.2% on appearance and mesh reconstruction tasks.

2026 Creating Multimodal Interactive Digital Twin Characters From Videos: A Dataset and Baseline
abstract
In this paper, we introduce a novel framework for creating multimodal interactive digital twin characters, from dialogue videos of TV shows. Specifically, these digital twin characters are capable of responding to user inputs with harmonious textual, vocal, and visual content. They not only replicate the external characteristics, such as appearance and tone, but also capture internal attributes, including personality and habitual behaviors. To support this ambitious task, we collect the Multimodal Character-Centric Conversation Dataset, named MCCCD, which includes character-specific and high-quality multimodal dialogue data with detailed annotations, featuring 6.8 k utterances and 4.6 hours of audio/video per character. Notably, the MCCCD dataset is approximately ten times larger than existing datasets in terms of per-character data volume, facilitating the detailed modeling of complex character-centric traits. Further, we propose a baseline framework to create digital twin characters, consists of dialogue generation through large language models, voice generation via speech synthesis models, and visual representation with 3D talking head models. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach significantly outperforms existing methods in generating consistent and character-specific responses, setting a new benchmark for digital character creation. Our collected dataset and proposed baseline have paved the way for the creation of highly interactive and natural digital avatars, opening the door to extensive and practical applications of digital humans.

2026 MSSG: Multi-Scale Speaker Graph Network for Active Speaker Detection
abstract
The active speaker detection task is to determine whether a person is speaking or not across a series of video frames. Existing methods heavily rely on facial information within the annotated face bounding boxes for cross-modal learning with audio. This leads to a substantial decline in detection performance when facial cues are unclear, such as in cases of face occlusion or low-resolution facial appearances. In this paper, we extend the perception scale using only face bounding box annotations to model both facial and gestural cues, addressing the over-reliance on facial cues in active speaker detection. We propose a novel graph neural network that models inter-speaker interactions and integrates various cues from individual speakers. The final detection results are obtained through a binary graph node classification task. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on the AVA-ActiveSpeaker dataset (mAP: 95.6%) and the ASW dataset (mAP: 99.4%), with a model size only 21% that of the second-best method. Additionally, when facial cues are of poor quality, our method demonstrates a significant performance advantage over existing approaches. The code and model weights will be available athttps://github.com/sdqdlgj/MSSG.

2025 LSS3D: Learnable Spatial Shifting for Consistent and High-Quality 3D Generation from Single-Image
abstract
Recently, multi-view diffusion-based 3D generation methods have gained significant attention. However, these methods often suffer from shape and texture misalignment across generated multi-view images, leading to low-quality 3D generation results, such as incomplete geometric details and textural ghosting. Some methods are mainly optimized for the frontal perspective and exhibit poor robustness to oblique perspective inputs. In this paper, to tackle the above challenges, we propose a high-quality image-to-3D approach, named LSS3D, with learnable spatial shifting to explicitly and effectively handle the multi-view inconsistencies and non-frontal input view. Specifically, we assign learnable spatial shifting parameters to each view, and adjust each view towards a spatially consistent target, guided by the reconstructed mesh, resulting in high-quality 3D generation with more complete geometric details and clean textures. Besides, we include the input view as an extra constraint for the optimization, further enhancing robustness to non-frontal input angles, especially for elevated viewpoint inputs. We also provide a comprehensive quantitative evaluation pipeline that can contribute to the community in performance comparisons. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method consistently achieves leading results in both geometric and texture evaluation metrics across more flexible input viewpoints.

2025 Super-NeRF: View-Consistent Detail Generation for NeRF Super-Resolution
abstract
The neural radiance field (NeRF) achieved remarkable success in modeling 3D scenes and synthesizing high-fidelity novel views. However, existing NeRF-based methods focus more on making full use of high-resolution images to generate high-resolution novel views, but less considering the generation of high-resolution details given only low-resolution images. In analogy to the extensive usage of image super-resolution, NeRF super-resolution is an effective way to generate low-resolution-guided high-resolution 3D scenes and holds great potential applications. Up to now, such an important topic is still under-explored. In this article, we propose a NeRF super-resolution method, named Super-NeRF, to generate high-resolution NeRF from only low-resolution inputs. Given multi-view low-resolution images, Super-NeRF constructs a multi-view consistency-controlling super-resolution module to generate various view-consistent high-resolution details for NeRF. Specifically, an optimizable latent code is introduced for each input view to control the generated reasonable high-resolution 2D images satisfying view consistency. The latent codes of each low-resolution image are optimized synergistically with the target Super-NeRF representation to utilize the view consistency constraint inherent in NeRF construction. We verify the effectiveness of Super-NeRF on synthetic, real-world, and even AI-generated NeRFs. Super-NeRF achieves state-of-the-art NeRF super-resolution performance on high-resolution detail generation and cross-view consistency.

2024 Incremental Residual Concept Bottleneck Models
abstract
Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs) map the black-box visual representations extracted by deep neural networks onto a set of interpretable concepts and use the concepts to make predictions, enhancing the transparency of the decision-making process. Multimodal pre-trained models can match visual representations with textual concept embeddings, allowing for obtaining the interpretable concept bottleneck without the expertise concept annotations. Recent research has focused on the concept bank establishment and the high-quality concept selection. However, it is challenging to construct a comprehensive concept bank through humans or large language models, which severely limits the performance of CBMs. In this work, we propose the Incremental Residual Concept Bottleneck Model (Res-CBM) to address the challenge of concept completeness. Specifically, the residual concept bottleneck model employs a set of optimizable vectors to complete missing concepts, then the incremental concept discovery module converts the complemented vectors with unclear meanings into potential concepts in the candidate concept bank. Our approach can be applied to any user-defined concept bank, as a post-hoc processing method to enhance the performance of any CBMs. Furthermore, to measure the descriptive efficiency of CBMs, the Concept Utilization Efficiency (CUE) metric is proposed. Experiments show that the Res-CBM outperforms the current state-of-the-art methods in terms of both accuracy and efficiency and achieves comparable performance to black-box models across multiple datasets.

2024 Breaking through the learning plateaus of in-context learning in Transformer
abstract
In-context learning, i.e., learning from context examples, is an impressive ability of Transformer. Training Transformers to possess this in-context learning skill is computationally intensive due to the occurrence of *learning plateaus*, which are periods within the training process where there is minimal or no enhancement in the model's in-context learning capability. To study the mechanism behind the learning plateaus, we conceptually separate a component within the model's internal representation that is exclusively affected by the model's weights. We call this the “weights component”, and the remainder is identified as the “context component”. By conducting meticulous and controlled experiments on synthetic tasks, we note that the persistence of learning plateaus correlates with compromised functionality of the weights component. Recognizing the impaired performance of the weights component as a fundamental behavior that drives learning plateaus, we have developed three strategies to expedite the learning of Transformers. The effectiveness of these strategies is further confirmed in natural language processing tasks. In conclusion, our research demonstrates the feasibility of cultivating a powerful in-context learning ability within AI systems in an eco-friendly manner.

2023 Unifying Layout Generation with a Decoupled Diffusion Model
abstract
Layout generation aims to synthesize realistic graphic scenes consisting of elements with different attributes in-cluding category, size, position, and between-element relation. It is a crucial task for reducing the burden on heavyduty graphic design works for formatted scenes, e.g., publications, documents, and user interfaces (UIs). Diverse application scenarios impose a big challenge in unifying various layout generation subtasks, including conditional and unconditional generation. In this paper, we propose a Layout Diffusion Generative Model (LDGM) to achieve such unification with a single decoupled diffusion model. LDGM views a layout of arbitrary missing or coarse element attributes as an intermediate diffusion status from a completed layout. Since different attributes have their individual semantics and characteristics, we propose to decouple the diffusion processes for them to improve the diversity of training samples and learn the reverse process jointly to exploit global-scope contexts for facilitating generation. As a result, our LDGM can generate layouts either from scratch or conditional on arbitrary available attributes. Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate our proposed LDGM outperforms existing layout generation models in both functionality and performance.

2023 Template-guided Hierarchical Feature Restoration for Anomaly Detection
abstract
Targeting for detecting anomalies of various sizes for complicated normal patterns, we propose a Template-guided Hierarchical Feature Restoration method, which introduces two key techniques, bottleneck compression and template-guided compensation, for anomaly-free feature restoration. Specially, our framework compresses hierarchical features of an image by bottleneck structure to preserve the most crucial features shared among normal samples. We design template-guided compensation to restore the distorted features towards anomaly-free features. Particularly, we choose the most similar normal sample as the template, and leverage hierarchical features from the template to compensate the distorted features. The bottleneck could partially filter out anomaly features, while the compensation further converts the reminding anomaly features towards normal with template guidance. Finally, anomalies are detected in terms of the cosine distance between the pre-trained features of an inference image and the corresponding restored anomaly-free features. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, which achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the MVTec LOCO AD dataset.

2023 DisDiff: Unsupervised Disentanglement of Diffusion Probabilistic Models
abstract
Targeting to understand the underlying explainable factors behind observations and modeling the conditional generation process on these factors, we connect disentangled representation learning to diffusion probabilistic models (DPMs) to take advantage of the remarkable modeling ability of DPMs. We propose a new task, disentanglement of (DPMs): given a pre-trained DPM, without any annotations of the factors, the task is to automatically discover the inherent factors behind the observations and disentangle the gradient fields of DPM into sub-gradient fields, each conditioned on the representation of each discovered factor. With disentangled DPMs, those inherent factors can be automatically discovered, explicitly represented and clearly injected into the diffusion process via the sub-gradient fields. To tackle this task, we devise an unsupervised approach, named DisDiff, and for the first time achieving disentangled representation learning in the framework of DPMs. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DisDiff.

2022 Visual Concepts Tokenization
abstract
Obtaining the human-like perception ability of abstracting visual concepts from concrete pixels has always been a fundamental and important target in machine learning research fields such as disentangled representation learning and scene decomposition. Towards this goal, we propose an unsupervised transformer-based Visual Concepts Tokenization framework, dubbed VCT, to perceive an image into a set of disentangled visual concept tokens, with each concept token responding to one type of independent visual concept. Particularly, to obtain these concept tokens, we only use cross-attention to extract visual information from the image tokens layer by layer without self-attention between concept tokens, preventing information leakage across concept tokens. We further propose a Concept Disentangling Loss to facilitate that different concept tokens represent independent visual concepts. The cross-attention and disentangling loss play the role of induction and mutual exclusion for the concept tokens, respectively. Extensive experiments on several popular datasets verify the effectiveness of VCT on the tasks of disentangled representation learning and scene decomposition. VCT achieves the state of the art results by a large margin.

2021 S2R-DepthNet: Learning a Generalizable Depth-Specific Structural Representation
abstract
Human can infer the 3D geometry of a scene from a sketch instead of a realistic image, which indicates that the spatial structure plays a fundamental role in understanding the depth of scenes. We are the first to explore the learning of a depth-specific structural representation, which captures the essential feature for depth estimation and ignores irrelevant style information. Our S2R-DepthNet (Synthetic to Real DepthNet) can be well generalized to un-seen real-world data directly even though it is only trained on synthetic data. S2R-DepthNet consists of: a) a Structure Extraction (STE) module which extracts a domain-invariant structural representation from an image by dis-entangling the image into domain-invariant structure and domain-specific style components, b) a Depth-specific Attention (DSA) module, which learns task-specific knowledge to suppress depth-irrelevant structures for better depth estimation and generalization, and c) a depth prediction module (DP) to predict depth from the depth-specific representation. Without access of any real-world images, our method even outperforms the state-of-the-art unsupervised domain adaptation methods which use real-world images of the tar-get domain for training. In addition, when using a small amount of labeled real-world data, we achieve the state-of-the-art performance under the semi-supervised setting.

2019 Unsupervised High-Resolution Depth Learning From Videos With Dual Networks
abstract
Unsupervised depth learning takes the appearance difference between a target view and a view synthesized from its adjacent frame as supervisory signal. Since the supervisory signal only comes from images themselves, the resolution of training data significantly impacts the performance. High-resolution images contain more fine-grained details and provide more accurate supervisory signal. However, due to the limitation of memory and computation power, the original images are typically down-sampled during training, which suffers heavy loss of details and disparity accuracy. In order to fully explore the information contained in high-resolution data, we propose a simple yet effective dual networks architecture, which can directly take high-resolution images as input and generate high-resolution and high-accuracy depth map efficiently. We also propose a Self-assembled Attention (SA-Attention) module to handle low-texture region. The evaluation on the benchmark KITTI and Make3D datasets demonstrates that our method achieves state-of-the-art results in the monocular depth estimation task.

2019 Moving Indoor: Unsupervised Video Depth Learning in Challenging Environments
abstract
Recently unsupervised learning of depth from videos has made remarkable progress and the results are comparable to fully supervised methods in outdoor scenes like KITTI. However, there still exist great challenges when directly applying this technology in indoor environments, e.g., large areas of non-texture regions like white wall, more complex ego-motion of handheld camera, transparent glasses and shiny objects. To overcome these problems, we propose a new optical-flow based training paradigm which reduces the difficulty of unsupervised learning by providing a clearer training target and handles the non-texture regions. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that the result of our method is comparable to fully supervised methods on the NYU Depth V2 benchmark. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first quantitative result of purely unsupervised learning method reported on indoor datasets.

2017 The Light Field Attachment: Turning a DSLR into a Light Field Camera Using a Low Budget Camera Ring
abstract
We propose a concept for a lens attachment that turns a standard DSLR camera and lens into a light field camera. The attachment consists of eight low-resolution, low-quality side cameras arranged around the central high-quality SLR lens. Unlike most existing light field camera architectures, this design provides a high-quality 2D image mode, while simultaneously enabling a new high-quality light field mode with a large camera baseline but little added weight, cost, or bulk compared with the base DSLR camera. From an algorithmic point of view, the high-quality light field mode is made possible by a new light field super-resolution method that first improves the spatial resolution and image quality of the side cameras and then interpolates additional views as needed. At the heart of this process is a super-resolution method that we call iterative Patch- And Depth-based Synthesis (iPADS), which combines patch-based and depth-based synthesis in a novel fashion. Experimental results obtained for both real captured data and synthetic data confirm that our method achieves substantial improvements in super-resolution for side-view images as well as the high-quality and view-coherent rendering of dense and high-resolution light fields.

2015 MultiFab: a machine vision assisted platform for multi-material 3D printing
abstract
We have developed a multi-material 3D printing platform that is high-resolution, low-cost, and extensible. The key part of our platform is an integrated machine vision system. This system allows for self-calibration of printheads, 3D scanning, and a closed-feedback loop to enable print corrections. The integration of machine vision with 3D printing simplifies the overall platform design and enables new applications such as 3D printing over auxiliary parts. Furthermore, our platform dramatically expands the range of parts that can be 3D printed by simultaneously supporting up to 10 different materials that can interact optically and mechanically. The platform achieves a resolution of at least 40 μm by utilizing piezoelectric inkjet printheads adapted for 3D printing. The hardware is low cost (less than $7,000) since it is built exclusively from off-the-shelf components. The architecture is extensible and modular -- adding, removing, and exchanging printing modules can be done quickly. We provide a detailed analysis of the system's performance. We also demonstrate a variety of fabricated multi-material objects.
