2022 Sommelier: Curating DNN Models for the Masses
abstract
Deep learning model repositories are indispensable in machine learning ecosystems today to facilitate model reuse. However, existing model repositories provide a bare-bone interface for model retrieval. The onus is on the user to profile and select from potentially hundreds of choices, barely relieving an average user of the expertise required to design the model in the first place. In this paper, we present Sommelier, an indexing and query system above typical DNN model repositories to interface directly with inference serving or other use cases. Given a desirable accuracy target and resource budget for an inference task category, Sommelier automatically searches through the repository for the most suitable model, without requiring manual profiling from the user. Motivated by manual iterative model search processes and typical model design strategies that generate model variants or models with common segments, Sommelier organizes DNN models based on their semantic correlation, defined as the probability of models producing the same results. This is further combined with a resource index based on relative resource consumption. Sommelier is implemented as a standalone query engine that can interface with an existing repository such as TF-Hub. A case study of 163 models in TF-Hub highlights the extent of model correlation across different model series, suggesting the best candidate model can easily evade manual profiling. Extensive evaluation shows that Sommelier returns the ideal model for over 95% of the queries; When interfaced with an inference server, Sommelier can reduce the 90th percentile tail latency of inference tasks by a factor of 6 via automatic model switching, far more than typical scale-out system optimizations.

2022 Video-zilla: An Indexing Layer for Large-Scale Video Analytics
abstract
Pervasive deployment of surveillance cameras today poses enormous scalability challenges to video analytics systems operating over many camera feeds. Currently, there are few indexing tools to organize video feeds beyond what is provided by a standard file system. Recent video analytic systems implement application-specific frame profiling and sampling techniques to reduce the number of raw videos processed, leveraging frame-level redundancy or manually labeled spatial-temporal correlation between cameras.

2019 Libra and the Art of Task Sizing in Big-Data Analytic Systems
abstract
Despite extensive investigation of job scheduling in data-intensive computation frameworks, less consideration has been given to optimizing job partitioning for resource utilization and efficient processing. Instead, partitioning and job sizing are a form of dark art, typically left to developer intuition and trial-and-error style experimentation.

2018 Potluck: Cross-Application Approximate Deduplication for Computation-Intensive Mobile Applications
abstract
Emerging mobile applications, such as cognitive assistance and augmented reality (AR) based gaming, are increasingly computation-intensive and latency-sensitive, while running on resource-constrained devices. The standard approaches to addressing these involve either offloading to a cloud(let) or local system optimizations to speed up the computation, often trading off computation quality for low latency. Instead, we observe that these applications often operate on similar input data from the camera feed and share common processing components, both within the same (type of) applications and across different ones. Therefore, deduplicating processing across applications could deliver the best of both worlds. In this paper, we present Potluck, to achieve approximate deduplication. At the core of the system is a cache service that stores and shares processing results between applications and a set of algorithms to process the input data to maximize deduplication opportunities. This is implemented as a background service on Android. Extensive evaluation shows that Potluck can reduce the processing latency for our AR and vision workloads by a factor of 2.5 to 10.

2018 FoggyCache: Cross-Device Approximate Computation Reuse
abstract
Mobile and IoT scenarios increasingly involve interactive and computation intensive contextual recognition. Existing optimizations typically resort to computation offloading or simplified on-device processing. Instead, we observe that the same application is often invoked on multiple devices in close proximity. Moreover, the application instances often processsimilar contextual data that map to thesame outcome. In this paper, we proposecross-device approximate computation reuse, which minimizes redundant computation by harnessing the "equivalence'' between different input values and reusing previously computed outputs with high confidence. We devise adaptive locality sensitive hashing (A-LSH) and homogenized k nearest neighbors (H-kNN). The former achieves scalable and constant lookup, while the latter provides high-quality reuse and tunable accuracy guarantee. We further incorporate approximate reuse as a service, called \name, in the computation offloading runtime. Extensive evaluation shows that, when given 95% accuracy target, \name\ consistently harnesses over 90% of reuse opportunities, which translates to reduced computation latency and energy consumption by a factor of 3 to 10.
