2025 LLM-driven Multimodal and Multi-Identity Listening Head Generation
abstract
Generating natural listener responses in conversational scenarios is crucial for creating engaging digital humans and avatars. Recent work has shown that large language models (LLMs) can be effectively leveraged for this task, demonstrating remarkable capabilities in generating contextually appropriate listener behaviors. However, current LLM-based methods face two critical limitations: they rely solely on speech content, overlooking other crucial communication signals, and they entangle listener identity with response generation, compromising output fidelity and generalization. In this work, we present a novel framework that addresses these limitations while maintaining the advantages of LLMs. Our approach introduces a Multimodal-LM architecture that jointly processes speech content, acoustics, and speaker emotion, capturing the full spectrum of communication cues. Additionally, we propose an identity disentanglement strategy using instance normalization and adaptive instance normalization in a VQ-VAE framework, enabling high-fidelity listening head synthesis with flexible identity control. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms existing approaches in terms of response naturalness and fidelity, while enabling effective identity control without retraining.

2024 Portrait4D: Learning One-Shot 4D Head Avatar Synthesis using Synthetic Data
abstract
Existing one-shot 4D head synthesis methods usually learn from monocular videos with the aid of 3DMM re-construction, yet the latter is evenly challenging which re-stricts them from reasonable 4D head synthesis. We present a method to learn one-shot 4D head synthesis via large-scale synthetic data. The key is to first learn a part-wise 4D generative model from monocular images via adver-sarial learning, to synthesize multi-view images of diverse identities and full motions as training data; then leverage a transformer-based animatable triplane reconstructor to learn 4D head reconstruction using the synthetic data. A novel learning strategy is enforced to enhance the general-izability to real images by disentangling the learning pro-cess of 3D reconstruction and reenactment. Experiments demonstrate our superiority over the prior art.

2024 Ultra-Wide Swath SAR Range Ambiguity Suppression with Chaotic Frequency Modulation Signals
abstract
Different from the traditional wide-swath synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system, ultra-wide swath SAR can achieve ultra-wide swath observation without the expense of an unimpaired azimuth resolution. However, due to the limitation of one receiving window, the radar echoes of near-range and far-range scatters arrive at the SAR receiver simultaneously, and this leads to the range ambiguity occurrence. This paper proposes a novel method based on chaotic frequency modulation (CFM) signals is proposed to suppress range ambiguity in ultra-wide swath synthetic aperture radar (SAR). Time-variant transmission avoids mutual interferences from the radar echoes of near-range and far-range scatters due to the uncorrelated property. Simulations and experiments on raw data are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2023 Reinforced Disentanglement for Face Swapping without Skip Connection
abstract
The SOTA face swap models still suffer the problem of either target identity (i.e., shape) being leaked or the target non-identity attributes (i.e., background, hair) failing to be fully preserved in the final results. We show that this insufficient disentanglement is caused by two flawed designs that were commonly adopted in prior models: (1) counting on only one compressed encoder to represent both the semantic-level non-identity facial attributes(i.e., pose) and the pixel-level non-facial region details, which is contradictory to satisfy at the same time; (2) highly relying on long skip-connections [50] between the encoder and the final generator, leaking a certain amount of target face identity into the result. To fix them, we introduce a new face swap framework called "WSC-swap" that gets rid of skip connections and uses two target encoders to respectively capture the pixel-level non-facial region attributes and the semantic non-identity attributes in the face region. To further reinforce the disentanglement learning for the target encoder, we employ both identity removal loss via adversarial training (i.e., GAN [18]) and the non-identity preservation loss via prior 3DMM models like [11]. Extensive experiments on both FaceForensics++ and CelebA-HQ show that our results significantly outperform previous works on a rich set of metrics, including one novel metric for measuring identity consistency that was completely neglected before.

2017 A Convolutional Neural Network-Based Chinese Text Detection Algorithm via Text Structure Modeling
abstract
Text detection in a natural environment plays an important role in many computer vision applications. While existing text detection methods are focused on English characters, there are strong application demands on text detection in other languages, such as Chinese. In this paper, we present a novel text detection algorithm for Chinese characters based on a specific designed convolutional neural network (CNN). The CNN contains a text structure component detector layer, a spatial pyramid layer, and a multi-input-layer deep belief network (DBN). The CNN is pre-trained via a convolutional sparse auto-encoder, specifically designed for extracting complex features from Chinese characters. In particular, the text structure component detectors enhance the accuracy and uniqueness of feature descriptors by extracting multiple text structure components in various ways. The spatial pyramid layer enhances the scale invariability of the CNN for detecting texts in multiple scales. Finally, the multi-input-layer DBN replaces the fully connected layers in the CNN to ensure features from multiple scales are comparable. A multilingual text detection dataset, in which texts in Chinese, English, and digits are labeled separately, is set up to evaluate the proposed text detection algorithm. The proposed algorithm shows a significant performance improvement over the baseline CNN algorithms. In addition the proposed algorithm is evaluated over a public multilingual benchmark and achieves state-of-the-art result under multiple languages. Furthermore, a simplified version of the proposed algorithm with only general components is evaluated on the ICDAR 2011 and 2013 datasets, showing comparable detection performance to the existing general text detection algorithms.

2016 A novel text structure feature extractor for Chinese scene text detection and recognition
abstract
Scene text information extraction plays an important role in many computer vision applications. Unlike most existing text extraction algorithms for English texts, in this paper, we focus on Chinese texts, which are more complex in stroke and structure. To tackle this challenging problem, we propose a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) based text structure feature extractor for Chinese texts. Each Chinese character contains its specific types and combination of text structure components, which is rarely seen in backgrounds. Thus, different from the features only applicable to one text extraction stage (text detection or text recognition), the text structure component feature is suitable for both Chinese text detection and recognition. A text structure component detector (TSCD) layer is designed to detect the large amount of component types, which is the most challenging part of extracting text structure component features. Through statistical classification various types of text structure component are detected by their specially designed convolutional units in the TSCD layer. With the TSCD layer, the CNN has improvements in the accuracy and uniqueness of text feature description. In the evaluation, both text detection and recognition algorithms based on the proposed text structure feature extractor achieve state-of-the-art results in two datasets.

2016 A novel scene text detection algorithm based on convolutional neural network
abstract
Candidate text region extraction plays a critical role in convolutional neural network (CNN) based text detection from natural images. In this paper, we propose a CNN based scene text detection algorithm with a new text region extractor. The so called candidate text region extractor I-MSER is based on Maximally Stable Extremal Region (MSER), which can improve the independency and completeness of the extracted candidate text regions. Design of I-MSER is motivated by the observation that text MSERs have high similarity and are close to each other. The independency of candidate text regions obtained by I-MSER is guaranteed by selecting the most representative regions from a MSER tree which is generated according to the spatial overlapping relationship among the MSERs. A multi-layer CNN model is trained to score the confidence value of the extracted regions extracted by the I-MSER for text detection. The new text detection algorithm based on I-MSER is evaluated with wide-used ICDAR 2011 and 2013 datasets and shows improved detection performance compared to the existing algorithms.
