A Maximum Logarithmic Maximum a Posteriori Probability Based Soft-Input Soft-Output Detector for the Coded Spatial Modulation SystemsabstractSoft-input soft-output (SISO) detector for the iterative detection and decoding of coded spatial modulation (SM) signals needs to compute the extrinsic bit log-likelihood ratio (LLR) associated with each detected bit. The maximum logarithmic maximum a posteriori (max-log-MAP) detector is known to perform closely to the optimal logarithmic maximum a posteriori (log-MAP) detector with much lower computational complexity. In this paper, we first apply several mathematical tricks to derive a new and low-complexity algorithm for the max-log-MAP detector. The proposed algorithm features a new tree pruning technique to visit few lattice points and a smart list administration technique to retain a max-log-MAP detector. By following the proposed algorithm, we then design a hardware architecture for SISO detection of coded SM signals over the scenario of 64-QAM symbols, 8 transmit antennas, and 4 receive antennas. Under the TSMC 40 nm CMOS technology, the VLSI implementation results reveal that our architecture requires 46.4K gates and leads to detection throughput 450 Mbps, while operating at clock frequency 400 MHz and consuming power 46 mW. Being the first hardware architecture for SISO detection of coded SM signals, our proposed low-cost max-log-MAP detector is very attractive. | 2016 | A 0.52/1 V Fast Lock-in ADPLL for Supporting Dynamic Voltage and Frequency ScalingabstractIn energy-efficient processing platforms, such as wearable sensors and implantable medical devices, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling allows optimizing the energy efficiency under various modes of operation. The clock generator used in these platforms should be capable of achieving a faster settling time and has a wider operating voltage range. In this brief, a fast lock-in all-digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) with two operation modes (0.52/1 V) is presented. The proposed ADPLL can quickly compute the desired digitally controlled oscillator control code with high accuracy. Therefore, the proposed ADPLL can achieve a fast setting time with frequency errors <;5% within four clock cycles. The proposed ADPLL is implemented using a standard performance 90-nm CMOS process. The output frequency of the ADPLL ranges from 60 to 600 MHz at 1 V, and from 30 to 120 MHz at 0.52 V. The power consumption of the proposed ADPLL is 0.92 mW at (1 V, 600 MHz), and 37 μW at (0.52 V, 120 MHz). Ching-Che Chung, Wei-Siang Su, Chi-Kuang Lo

A Low-Cost Low-Power All-Digital Spread-Spectrum Clock GeneratorabstractIn this brief, a low-cost low-power all-digital spread-spectrum clock generator (ADSSCG) is presented. The proposed ADSSCG can provide an accurate programmable spreading ratio with process, voltage, and temperature variations. To maintain the frequency stability while performing triangular modulation, the fast-relocked mechanism is proposed. The proposed fast-relocked ADSSCG is implemented in a standard performance 90-nm CMOS process, and the active area is 200 μm × 200 μm. The experimental results show that the electromagnetic interference reduction is 14.61 dB with a 0.5% spreading ratio and 19.69 dB with a 2% spreading ratio at 270 MHz. The power consumption is 443 μW at 270 MHz with a 1.0 V power supply. Ching-Che Chung, Duo Sheng, Wei-Da Ho

A Wide-Range Low-Cost All-Digital Duty-Cycle CorrectorabstractA system clock with a 50% duty cycle is demanded in high-speed data communication applications, such as double data rate memories and double sampling analog-to-digital converters. In this paper, a wide-range low-cost all-digital duty-cycle corrector (ADDCC) is presented. The proposed ADDCC uses a delay-recycled half-cycle time delay line to reduce the required length of the delay line to half of the input clock period. Thus, it can extend the operating frequency toward a lower frequency with small area cost as compared with the conventional design. The proposed design is implemented in a standard performance 90-nm CMOS process, and the active area is 170 × 170 μm2. The input frequency of the proposed ADDCC ranges from 75 to 734 MHz, and the input duty-cycle ranges from 9% to 86%. The measured output duty-cycle error is less than 1.78%. The proposed ADDCC consumes 4.59 mW at 734 MHz and 0.9 mW at 75 MHz with a 1.0-V power supply. Ching-Che Chung, Duo Sheng, Chang-Jun Li

Partial Parity Cache and Data Cache Management Method to Improve the Performance of an SSD-Based RAIDabstractIn this paper, a partial parity cache and data cache management method is presented for reducing the parity updating cost of a solid-state disk (SSD) based redundant array of inexpensive disk (RAID) system, thereby which the input/output (I/O) performance of the RAID system can be improved. SSDs have many advantages compared to hard disk drives. However, it is not advisable to directly add SSDs into a RAID system because doing so will decrease the performance and the life-time of the SSDs. In the RAID-5 system, parity generation includes read and write operations to the SSDs. Whenever there is a new write request to the RAID, the related parity must be updated and written to the SSDs. Such frequent parity updates result in poor RAID performance and shortens the life-time of the SSDs. This paper combines the prior methods and the proposed efficient buffer management method with a data cache. The proposed method reduces the number of read and write operations for generating parities in the RAID system. Experimental results show that the I/O performance of the RAID-5 system can be improved by 76% by using the proposed method. Ching-Che Chung, Hao-Hsiang Hsu

| 2014 | High-Resolution All-Digital Duty-Cycle Corrector in 65-nm CMOS TechnologyabstractIn high-speed data transmission applications, such as double data rate memory and double sampling analog-to-digital converter, the positive and negative edges of the system clock are utilized for data sampling. Thus, these systems require an exact 50% duty cycle of the system clock. In this paper, two wide-range all-digital duty-cycle correctors (ADDCCs) with output clock phase alignment are presented. The proposed phase-alignment ADDCC (PA-ADDCC) not only achieves the desired output/input phase alignment, but also maintains the output duty cycle at 50% with a short locking time. In addition, the proposed high-resolution ADDCC (HR-ADDCC) without a half-cycle delay line can improve the delay resolution and mitigate the delay mismatch problem in a nanometer CMOS process. Experimental results show that the frequency range of the proposed ADDCCs is 263-1020 MHz for the PA-ADDCC and 200-1066 MHz for the HR-ADDCC with a DCC resolution of 3.5 and 1.75 ps, respectively. In addition, the proposed PA-ADDCC and HR-ADDCC are implemented in an all-digital manner to reduce circuit complexity and leakage power in advanced process technologies and, thus, are very suitable for system-on-chip applications. | 2011 | A Low-Power and Portable Spread Spectrum Clock Generator for SoC ApplicationsabstractIn this paper, a novel portable and all-digital spread spectrum clock generator (ADSSCG) suitable for system-on-chip (SoC) applications with low-power consumption is presented. The proposed ADSSCG can provide flexible spreading ratios by the proposed rescheduling division triangular modulation (RDTM). Thus it can provide different EMI attenuation performance for various system applications. Furthermore, the proposed ADSSCG employs a low-power digitally controlled oscillator (DCO) to save overall power consumption significantly. Measurement results show that power consumption of the proposed ADSSCG is 1.2 mW (@54 MHz), and it provides 9.5 dB EMI reductions with 1% spreading ratio. Besides, the proposed ADSSCG has very small chip area as compared with conventional SSCGs which often required large on-chip loop filter capacitors. In addition, the proposed ADSSCG is implemented only with standard cells, making it easily portable to different processes and very suitable for SoC applications.
