| 2023 | Sub-6 GHz to mmWave for 5G-Advanced and Beyond: Channel Measurements, Characteristics and Impact on System PerformanceabstractIn the 5G-Advanced and beyond systems, multi-frequency cooperative networking will become an inevitable development trend. However, the channels have not been fully investigated at multi-frequency bands and in multi-scenarios by using the same channel sounder, especially for the sub-6 GHz to millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands. In this paper, we carry out channel measurements at four frequency bands (3.3, 6.5, 15, and 28 GHz) in two scenarios including Urban Micro (UMi) and Outdoor-to-Indoor (O2I) with the same channel sounder. The channel characteristics are extracted and modeled, including path loss (PL), shadow fading, frequency dependence of cluster features, root mean square (RMS) delay spread (DS), Ricean K-factor, and the correlation properties. We mainly focus on the analysis of large-scale parameters and more consideration of the link budget coverage problem. We present the frequency dependence model of the channel characteristics. Among them, in the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) condition, it is found that except for theoretical value brought by higher frequency, additional path loss increment will be generated. Based on these channel characteristics, the impact on performance of the wireless system is analyzed including cell coverage radius, data rate and bit error rate (BER). The results can give an insight into the spectrum selection and optimization in 5G-Advanced and beyond multi-frequency communication systems. | 2022 | Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces: Channel Characterization and ModelingabstractReconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are 2-D metasurfaces, which can intelligently manipulate electromagnetic waves by low-cost near passive reflecting elements. RIS is viewed as a potential key technology for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communication systems mainly due to its advantages in tuning wireless signals, thus smartly controlling propagation environments. In this article, we aim at addressing channel characterization and modeling issues of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems. First, the concept, principle, and potential applications of RIS are given. An overview of RIS-based channel measurements and experiments is presented by classifying frequency bands, scenarios, system configurations, RIS constructions, experiment purposes, and channel observations. Then, RIS-based channel characteristics are studied, including reflection and transmission, the Doppler effect and multipath fading mitigation, channel reciprocity, channel hardening, rank improvement, far field, near field, and so on. RIS-based channel modeling works are investigated, including large-scale path loss models and small-scale multipath fading models. Finally, future research directions related to RIS-assisted channels are also discussed. | 2015 | 28GHz millimeter wave propagation models based on ray-tracing in urban scenarioabstractThe millimeter wave spectrum is widely studied as one of the most important resources for the IMT (International Mobile Telecommunication) system towards to the 5G for the large bandwidth. In this paper, its investigated the propagation characteristics of 28GHz millimeter wave using Ray-Tracing in Chengdu city of China. Both the close-in-reference and floating intercept path loss fitting methods combining with the shadow fading are studied. Based on the Ray-Tracing, different path loss fitting method combining different antenna pattern and outage threshold are studied. According to observation of the comparison with these two fitting path loss methods, it is found that close-in-reference method can get more robust attenuation exponent. In addition, its shadow fading deviation will be less than floating intercept method in shorter transmit distance, and only increase less than 2dB for longer transmit distance. A certain amount of outage receiver point are found and the influence to path loss are analyzed. For the high direction antenna pattern, if it can not capture the strong path, it will also influence the path loss results. Bolun Guo, Meiying Yang |
