| 2019 | AnalyticDB: Real-time OLAP Database System at Alibaba CloudabstractWith data explosion in scale and variety, OLAP databases play an increasingly important role in serving real-time analysis with low latency (e.g., hundreds of milliseconds), especially when incoming queries are complex and ad hoc in nature. Moreover, these systems are expected to provide high query concurrency and write throughput, and support queries over structured and complex data types (e.g., JSON, vector and texts). In this paper, we introduce AnalyticDB, a real-time OLAP database system developed at Alibaba. AnalyticDB maintains all-column indexes in an asynchronous manner with acceptable overhead, which provides low latency for complex ad-hoc queries. Its storage engine extends hybrid row-column layout for fast retrieval of both structured data and data of complex types. To handle large-scale data with high query concurrency and write throughput, AnalyticDB decouples read and write access paths. To further reduce query latency, novel storage-aware SQL optimizer and execution engine are developed to fully utilize the advantages of the underlying storage and indexes. AnalyticDB has been successfully deployed on Alibaba Cloud to serve numerous customers (both large and small). It is capable of holding 100 trillion rows of records, i.e., 10PB+ in size. At the same time, it is able to serve 10m+ writes and 100k+ queries per second, while completing complex queries within hundreds of milliseconds. | 2019 | RF-RPC: Remote Fetching RPC Paradigm for RDMA-Enabled NetworkabstractRemote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) devices are widely deployed in modern data centers. However, existing RDMA usages lead to a dilemma between performance and redesign cost. Server-reply mode directly replaces socket-based send/receive primitives with corresponding RDMA counterparts. It can not fully harness the power of RDMA devices. Server-bypass is distinct mode provided by RDMA for reaching the hardware limits. This mode can totally bypass the server by using one-sided RDMA operations but at the cost of redesigning software. This paper provides a different approach, called RF-RPC (Remote Fetching RPC Paradigm). Different from server-reply, RF-RPC makes client fetch the results from server using one-sided RDMA instead of waiting the results pushed by server. Different from server-bypass, RF-RPC demands server to process client's requests for supporting programming paradigm like RPC. Thus, RF-RPC can achieve high performance without abandoning traditional programming models. An RF-RPC supported in-memory key-value store shows that the performance can be improved by 1.6× comparing to server-reply paradigm and 4× comparing to server-bypass paradigm. | 2017 | RFP: When RPC is Faster than Server-Bypass with RDMAabstractRemote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) has been widely deployed in modern data centers. However, existing usages of RDMA lead to a dilemma between performance and redesign cost. They either directly replace socket-based send/receive primitives with the corresponding RDMA counterpart (server-reply), which only achieves moderate performance improvement; or push performance further by using one-sided RDMA operations to totally bypass the server (server-bypass), at the cost of redesigning the software. | 2016 | Systematic Data Placement Optimization in Multi-Cloud Storage for Complex RequirementsabstractMulti-cloud storage can provide better features such as availability and scalability. Current works use multiple cloud storage providers with erasure coding to achieve certain benefits including fault-tolerance improving or vendor lock-in avoiding. However, these works only use the multi-cloud storage in ad-hoc ways, and none of them considers the optimization issue in general. In fact, the key to optimize the multi-cloud storage is to effectively choose providers and erasure coding parameters. Meanwhile, the data placement should satisfy system or application developers' requirements. As developers often demand various objectives to be optimized simultaneously, such complex requirement optimization cannot be easily fulfilled by ad-hoc ways. This paper presents Triones, a systematic model to formally formulate data placement in multi-cloud storage by using erasure coding. Firstly, Triones addresses the problem of data placement optimization by applying non-linear programming and geometric space abstraction. It could satisfy complex requirements involving multi-objective optimization. Secondly, Triones can effectively balance among different objectives in optimization and is scalable to incorporate new ones. The effectiveness of the model is proved by extensive experiments on multiple cloud storage providers in the real world. For simple requirements, Triones can achieve 50 percent access latency reduction, compared with the model in μLibCloud. For complex requirements, Triones can improve fault-tolerance level by 2× and reduce access latency and vendor lock-in level by 30~70 percent and 49.85 percent respectively with about 19.19 percent more cost, compared with the model only optimizing cost in Scalia.
