2025 Advancing Dense Endoscopic Reconstruction with Gaussian Splatting-Driven Surface Normal-Aware Tracking and Mapping
abstract
Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) is essential for precise surgical interventions and robotic tasks in minimally invasive procedures. While recent advancements in 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have improved SLAM with high-quality novel view synthesis and fast rendering, these systems struggle with accurate depth and surface reconstruction due to multi-view inconsistencies. Simply incorporating SLAM and 3DGS leads to mismatches between the reconstructed frames. In this work, we present Endo-2DTAM, a real-time endoscopic SLAM system with 2D Gaussian Splatting (2DGS) to address these challenges. Endo-2DTAM incorporates a surface normal-aware pipeline, which consists of tracking, mapping, and bundle adjustment modules for geometrically accurate reconstruction. Our robust tracking module combines point-topoint and point-to-plane distance metrics, while the mapping module utilizes normal consistency and depth distortion to enhance surface reconstruction quality. We also introduce a pose-consistent strategy for efficient and geometrically coherent keyframe sampling. Extensive experiments on public endoscopic datasets demonstrate that Endo-2DTAM achieves an RMSE of$1.87 \pm 0.63 \mathbf{m m}$for depth reconstruction of surgical scenes while maintaining computationally efficient tracking, high-quality visual appearance, and real-time rendering. Our code will be released at github.com/lastbasket/Endo-2DTAM.

2025 Exploring Stiffness Gradient Effects in Magnetically Induced Metamorphic Materials via Continuum Simulation and Validation
abstract
Magnetic soft continuum robots are capable of bending with remote control in confined space environments, and they have been applied in various bioengineering contexts. As one type of ferromagnetic soft continuums, the Magnetically Induced Metamorphic Materials (MIMMs)-based continuum (MC) exhibits similar bending behaviors. Based on the characteristics of its base material, MC is flexible in modifying unit stiffness and convenient in molding fabrication. However, recent studies on magnetic continuum robots have primarily focused on one or two design parameters, limiting the development of a comprehensive magnetic continuum bending model. In this work, we constructed graded-stiffness MCs (GMCs) and developed a numerical model for GMCs’ bending performance, incorporating four key parameters that determine their performance. The simulated bending results were validated with real bending experiments in four different categories: varying magnetic field, cross-section, unit stiffness, and unit length. The graded-stiffness design strategy applied to GMCs prevents sharp bending at the fixed end and results in a more circular curvature. We also trained an expansion model for GMCs’ bending performance that is highly efficient and accurate compared to the simulation process. An extensive library of bending prediction for GMCs was built using the trained model.

2025 Learning to Perform Low-Contact Autonomous Nasotracheal Intubation by Recurrent Action-Confidence Chunking with Transformer
abstract
Nasotracheal intubation (NTI) is critical for establishing artificial airways in clinical anesthesia and critical care. Current manual methods face significant challenges, including cross-infection, especially during respiratory infection care, and insufficient control of endoluminal contact forces, increasing the risk of mucosal injuries. While existing studies have focused on automated endoscopic insertion, the automation of NTI remains unexplored despite its unique challenges: Nasotracheal tubes exhibit greater diameter and rigidity than standard endoscopes, substantially increasing insertion complexity and patient risks. We propose a novel autonomous NTI system with two key components to address these challenges. First, an autonomous NTI system is developed, incorporating a prosthesis embedded with force sensors, allowing for safety assessment and data filtering. Then, the Recurrent Action-Confidence Chunking with Transformer (RACCT) model is developed to handle complex tube-tissue interactions and partial visual observations. Experimental results demonstrate that the RACCT model outperforms the ACT model in all aspects and achieves a 66% reduction in average peak insertion force compared to manual operations while maintaining equivalent success rates. This validates the system’s potential for reducing infection risks and improving procedural safety.

2024 Robust Depth Enhancement via Polarization Prompt Fusion Tuning
abstract
Existing depth sensors are imperfect and may provide inaccurate depth values in challenging scenarios, such as in the presence of transparent or reflective objects. In this work, we present a general framework that leverages polarization imaging to improve inaccurate depth measurements from various depth sensors. Previous polarization-based depth enhancement methods focus on utilizing pure physics-based formulas for a single sensor. In contrast, our method first adopts a learning-based strategy where a neural network is trained to estimate a dense and complete depth map from polarization data and a sensor depth map from different sensors. To further improve the performance, we propose a Polarization Prompt Fusion Tuning (PPFT) strategy to effectively utilize RGB-based models pre-trained on large-scale datasets, as the size of the polarization dataset is limited to train a strong model from scratch. We conducted extensive experiments on a public dataset, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method performs favorably compared to existing depth enhancement baselines. Code and demos are available at https://lastbasket.github.io/PPFT/.

2024 Towards Trustworthy MetaShopping: Studying Manipulative Audiovisual Designs in Virtual-Physical Commercial Platforms
abstract
E-commerce has emerged as a significant endeavour in which technological advancements influence the shopping experience. Simultaneously, the metaverse is the next breakthrough to transform multimedia engagement. However, under such situations, deceiving designs aimed at deceiving users into making desired choices might be more successful. This paper proposes the design space of manipulative techniques in e-commerce applications for the metaverse. We construct our arguments by evaluating user interaction with manipulative design in metaverse shopping experiences, followed by a survey among users to understand the effect of counteracting manipulative e-commerce scenarios. Our findings can understanding of design guidelines according to metaverse e-commerce experiences and the possibility of opportunities to improve user awareness of manipulative experiences. © 2024 ACM.

2022 Towards Reproducible Evaluations for Flying Drone Controllers in Virtual Environments
abstract
Research attention on natural user interfaces (NUIs) for drone flights are rising. Nevertheless, NUIs are highly diversified, and primarily evaluated by different physical environments leading to hard-to-compare performance between such solutions. We propose a virtual environment, namely VRFlightSim, enabling comparative evaluations with enriched drone flight details to address this issue. We first replicated a state-of-the-art (SOTA) interface and designed two tasks (crossing and pointing) in our virtual environment. Then, two user studies with 13 participants demonstrate the necessity of VRFlightSim and further highlight the potential of open-data interface designs.
