| 2025 | VL-Rethinker: Incentivizing Self-Reflection of Vision-Language Models with Reinforcement LearningabstractRecently, slow-thinking systems like GPT-o1 and DeepSeek-R1 have demonstrated great potential in solving challenging problems through explicit reflection. They significantly outperform the best fast-thinking models, such as GPT-4o, on various math and science benchmarks. However, their multimodal reasoning capabilities remain on par with fast-thinking models. For instance, GPT-o1's performance on benchmarks like MathVista, MathVerse, and MathVision is similar to fast-thinking models. In this paper, we aim to enhance the slow-thinking capabilities of vision-language models using reinforcement learning (without relying on distillation) to advance the state of the art. First, we adapt the GRPO algorithm with a novel technique called Selective Sample Replay (SSR) to address the vanishing advantages problem. While this approach yields strong performance, the resulting RL-trained models exhibit limited self-reflection or self-verification. To further encourage slow-thinking, we introduce Forced Rethinking, which appends a rethinking trigger token to the end of rollouts in RL training, explicitly enforcing a self-reflection reasoning step. By combining these two techniques, our model, VL-Rethinker, advances state-of-the-art scores on MathVista, MathVerse to achieve 80.4%, 63.5% respectively. VL-Rethinker also achieves open-source SoTA on multi-disciplinary benchmarks such as MathVision, MMMU-Pro, EMMA, and MEGA-Bench, narrowing the gap with OpenAI-o1. We conduct comprehensive ablations and analysis to provide insights into the effectiveness of our approach. Haozhe Wang 0002, Chao Qu, Zuming Huang, Fangzhen Lin, Wenhu Chen |

| 2023 | Fine-grained Pseudo Labels for Scene Text RecognitionabstractPseudo-Labeling based semi-supervised learning has shown promising advantages in Scene Text Recognition (STR). Most of them usually use a pre-trained model to generate sequence-level pseudo labels for text images and then re-train the model. Recently, conducting Pseudo-Labeling in a teacher-student framework (a student model is supervised by the pseudo labels from a teacher model) has become increasingly popular, which trains in an end-to-end manner and yields outstanding performance in semi-supervised learning. However, applying this framework directly to Pseudo-Labeling STR exhibits unstable convergence, as generating pseudo labels at the coarse-grained sequence-level leads to inefficient utilization of unlabelled data. Furthermore, the inherent domain shift between labeled and unlabeled data results in low quality of derived pseudo labels. To mitigate the above issues, we propose a novel Cross-domain Pseudo-Labeling (CPL) approach for scene text recognition, which makes better utilization of unlabeled data at the character-level and provides more accurate pseudo labels. Specifically, our proposed Pseudo-Labeled Curriculum Learning dynamically adjusts the thresholds for different character classes according to the model's learning status. Moreover, an Adaptive Distribution Regularizer is employed to bridge the domain gap and improve the quality of pseudo labels. Extensive experiments show that CPL boosts those representative STR models to achieve state-of-the-art results on six challenging STR benchmarks. Besides, it can be effectively generalized to handwritten text. Xiaoxue Chen, Zuming Huang, Lele Xie, Jingdong Chen, Ming Yang 0007 |

| 2019 | Look More Than Once: An Accurate Detector for Text of Arbitrary ShapesabstractPrevious scene text detection methods have progressed substantially over the past years. However, limited by the receptive field of CNNs and the simple representations like rectangle bounding box or quadrangle adopted to describe text, previous methods may fall short when dealing with more challenging text instances, such as extremely long text and arbitrarily shaped text. To address these two problems, we present a novel text detector namely LOMO, which localizes the text progressively for multiple times (or in other word, LOok More than Once). LOMO consists of a direct regressor (DR), an iterative refinement module (IRM) and a shape expression module (SEM). At first, text proposals in the form of quadrangle are generated by DR branch. Next, IRM progressively perceives the entire long text by iterative refinement based on the extracted feature blocks of preliminary proposals. Finally, a SEM is introduced to reconstruct more precise representation of irregular text by considering the geometry properties of text instance, including text region, text center line and border offsets. The state-of-the-art results on several public benchmarks including ICDAR2017-RCTW, SCUT-CTW1500, Total-Text, ICDAR2015 and ICDAR17-MLT confirm the striking robustness and effectiveness of LOMO. | 2019 | A Single-Shot Arbitrarily-Shaped Text Detector based on Context Attended Multi-Task LearningabstractDetecting scene text of arbitrary shapes has been a challenging task over the past years. In this paper, we propose a novel segmentation-based text detector, namely SAST, which employs a context attended multi-task learning framework based on a Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) to learn various geometric properties for the reconstruction of polygonal representation of text regions. Taking sequential characteristics of text into consideration, a Context Attention Block is introduced to capture long-range dependencies of pixel information to obtain a more reliable segmentation. In post-processing, a Point-to-Quad assignment method is proposed to cluster pixels into text instances by integrating both high-level object knowledge and low-level pixel information in a single shot. Moreover, the polygonal representation of arbitrarily-shaped text can be extracted with the proposed geometric properties much more effectively. Experiments on several benchmarks, including ICDAR2015, ICDAR2017-MLT, SCUT-CTW1500, and Total-Text, demonstrate that SAST achieves better or comparable performance in terms of accuracy. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm runs at 27.63 FPS on SCUT-CTW1500 with a Hmean of 81.0% on a single NVIDIA Titan Xp graphics card, surpassing most of the existing segmentation-based methods. | 2016 | Building extraction from multi-source remote sensing images via deep deconvolution neural networksabstractBuilding extraction from remote sensing images is of great importance in urban planning. Yet it is a longstanding problem for many complicate factors such as various scales and complex backgrounds. This paper proposes a novel supervised building extraction method via deep deconvolution neural networks (DeconvNet). Our method consists of three steps. First, we preprocess the multi-source remote sensing images provided by the IEEE GRSS Data Fusion Contest. A high-quality Vancouver building dataset is created on pansharpened images whose ground-truth are obtained from the OpenStreetMap project. Then, we pretrain a deep deconvolution network on a public large-scale Massachusetts building dataset, which is further fine-tuned by two band combinations (RGB and NRG) of our dataset, respectively. Moreover, the output saliency maps of the fine-tuned models are fused to produce the final building extraction result. Extensive experiments on our Vancouver building dataset demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first work to use deconvolution networks for building extraction from remote sensing images. | 2015 | Extraction of Virtual Baselines from Distorted Document Images Using Curvilinear ProjectionabstractThe baselines of a document page are a set of virtual horizontal and parallel lines, to which the printed contents of document, e.g., text lines, tables or inserted photos, are aligned. Accurate baseline extraction is of great importance in the geometric correction of curved document images. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for accurate extraction of these virtual visual cues from a curved document image. Our method comes from two basic observations that the baselines of documents do not intersect with each other and that within a narrow strip, the baselines can be well approximated by linear segments. Based upon these observations, we propose a curvilinear projection based method and model the estimation of curved baselines as a constrained sequential optimization problem. A dynamic programming algorithm is then developed to efficiently solve the problem. The proposed method can extract the complete baselines through each pixel of document images in a high accuracy. It is also scripts insensitive and highly robust to image noises, non-textual objects, image resolutions and image quality degradation like blurring and non-uniform illumination. Extensive experiments on a number of captured document images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Gaofeng Meng, Zuming Huang, Yonghong Song, Shiming Xiang, Chunhong Pan |
