2026 TouchFormer: A Robust Transformer-based Framework for Multimodal Material Perception
abstract
Traditional vision-based material perception methods often experience substantial performance degradation under visually impaired conditions, thereby motivating the shift toward non-visual multimodal material perception. Despite this, existing approaches frequently perform naive fusion of multimodal inputs, overlooking key challenges such as modality-specific noise, missing modalities common in real-world scenarios, and the dynamically varying importance of each modality depending on the task. These limitations lead to suboptimal performance across several benchmark tasks. In this paper, we propose a robust multimodal fusion framework, TouchFormer. Specifically, we employ a Modality-Adaptive Gating (MAG) mechanism and intra- and inter-modality attention mechanisms to adaptively integrate cross-modal features, enhancing model robustness. Additionally, we introduce a Cross-Instance Embedding Regularization(CER) strategy, which significantly improves classification accuracy in fine-grained subcategory material recognition tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that, compared to existing non-visual methods, the proposed TouchFormer framework achieves classification accuracy improvements of 2.48% and 6.83% on SSMC and USMC tasks, respectively. Furthermore, real-world robotic experiments validate TouchFormer's effectiveness in enabling robots to better perceive and interpret their environment, paving the way for its deployment in safety-critical applications such as emergency response and industrial automation.

2025 Stackelberg Game-Based Finite-Horizon Optimal Fault-Tolerant Control of Heterogeneous MASs
abstract
This article investigates the problem of finite-horizon optimal fault-tolerant control for heterogeneous nonlinear discrete-time multiagent systems. A distributed optimal fault estimation and optimal fault-tolerant control scheme is presented based on the Stackelberg game and graphical game frameworks, in which agent systems and corresponding fault estimators are treated asthe “leader” and “follower” in the Stackelberg game, and the agent systems constitutes a graphical game. This is more general than the existing integration design of fault estimation as well as fault-tolerant control, as it better reveals the interaction between the agent system and its fault estimator. To achieve interactive Stackelberg equilibrium, an auxiliary controller for fault estimator is designed, which exhibits non cooperative properties with the fault-tolerant controller of the agent. Then, a finite-time distributed estimator for discrete-time case is developed for the first time to rapidly estimate the matrix and state of the leader agent. The coefficient matrices of the considered fault signals obey a hidden semi-Markov switching rule, which can encompass the existing actuator and sensor fault models. Further, two critic neural networks are established to obtain approximate solutions of interactive Stackelberg equilibrium online by employing the adaptive dynamic programming technology. Finally, simulation examples are provided to verify the efficacy and applicability of the proposed scheme.

2025 MASL-AFU: A High Memory Access Efficiency 2-D Scalable LUT-Based Activation Function Unit for On-Device DNN Training
abstract
On-device deep neural network (DNN) training faces constraints in storage capacity and energy supply. Existing works primarily focus on optimizing the training of convolutional and batch normalization (BN) layers to improve the compute-to-communication (CTC) ratio and reduce the energy cost of off-chip memory access (MA). However, the training of activation layers remains challenging due to the additional off-chip MA required for derivative calculations. This article proposes MASL-AFU, an architecture designed to accelerate the activation layer in on-device DNN training. MASL-AFU leverages nonuniform piecewise linear (NUPWL) functions to speed up the forward propagation (FP) in the activation layer. During the error propagation (EP) process, retrieving derivatives from a lookup table (LUT) eliminates the need for redundant retrieval of the input data used in FP. By storing LUT indices instead of the original activation inputs, MASL-AFU significantly reduces and accelerates MA. Compared to other activation function units, MASL-AFU offers up to a$5.8\times $increase in computational and off-chip MA efficiency. In addition, MASL-AFU incorporates two dimensions of scalability: data precision and the number of LUT entries. These scalable, hardware-friendly methods enhance MASL-AFU’s area efficiency by up to$3.24\times $and energy efficiency by up to$3.85\times $.

2023 A Reconfigurable Supercapacitor Cell Balancing Circuit Based on a CLLC Converter and Multiple Switch Banks
abstract
This paper proposes a reconfigurable cell balancing circuit for supercapacitors by incorporating a CLLC converter and coupling each supercapacitor with a bank of six switches. When the supercapacitors are not exchanging energy with external sources or loads, static balancing can be achieved by properly configuring the switches to divide the supercapacitors into two groups based on their voltages. Each group is connected to one port of the CLLC converter and bidirectional power flows between the two groups can be implemented to balance the supercapacitors. If the supercapacitors are being charged or discharged, dynamic balancing can be implemented by bypassing certain supercapacitors with excessively high (during charging) or low (during discharging) voltages. Simulation results verify the static and dynamic balancing schemes.
