2025 Pairwise Maximum Likelihood For Multi-Class Logistic Regression Model With Multiple Rare Classes
abstract
We study in this work the problem of multi-class logistic regression with one major class and multiple rare classes, which is motivated by a real application in TikTok live stream data. The model is inspired by the two-class logistic regression model of Wang (2020) but with surprising theoretical findings, which in turn motivate new estimation methods with excellent statistical and computational efficiency. Specifically, since rigorous theoretical analysis suggests that the resulting maximum likelihood estimators of different rare classes should be asymptotically independent, we consider to solve multiple pairwise two-class logistic regression problems instead of optimizing the joint log-likelihood function with computational challenge in multi-class problem, which are computationally much easier and can be conducted in a fully parallel way. To further reduce the computation cost, a subsample-based pairwise likelihood estimator is developed by down-sampling the major class. We show rigorously that the resulting estimators could be as asymptotically efficient as the global maximum likelihood estimator under appropriate regularity conditions. Extensive simulation studies are presented to support our theoretical findings and a TikTok live stream dataset is analyzed for illustration purpose.

2025 Vertical Federated Feature Screening
abstract
With the rapid development of the big data era, Vertical Federated Learning (VFL) has been widely applied to enable data collaboration while ensuring privacy protection. However, the ultrahigh dimensionality of features and the sparse data structures inherent in large-scale datasets introduce significant computational complexity. In this paper, we propose the Vertical Federated Feature Screening (VFS) algorithm, which effectively reduces computational, communication, and encryption costs. VFS is a two-stage feature screening procedure that proceeds from coarse to fine: the first stage quickly filters out irrelevant feature groups, followed by a more refined screening of individual features. It significantly reduces the resource demands of downstream tasks such as secure joint modeling or federated feature selection. This efficiency is particularly beneficial in scenarios with ultrahigh feature dimensionality or severe class imbalance in the response variable. The statistical and computational properties of VFS are rigorously established. Numerical simulations and real-world applications demonstrate its superior performance.

2024 Network Tight Community Detection
abstract
Conventional community detection methods often categorize all nodes into clusters. However, the presumed community structure of interest may only be valid for a subset of nodes (named as `tight nodes'), while the rest of the network may consist of noninformative ``scattered nodes''. For example, a protein-protein network often contains proteins that do not belong to specific biological functional modules but are involved in more general processes, or act as bridges between different functional modules. Forcing each of these proteins into a single cluster introduces unwanted biases and obscures the underlying biological implication. To address this issue, we propose a tight community detection (TCD) method to identify tight communities excluding scattered nodes. The algorithm enjoys a strong theoretical guarantee of tight node identification accuracy and is scalable for large networks. The superiority of the proposed method is demonstrated by various synthetic and real experiments.

2024 Distributed Pseudo-Likelihood Method for Community Detection in Large-Scale Networks
abstract
This paper proposes a distributed pseudo-likelihood method (DPL) to conveniently identify the community structure of large-scale networks. Specifically, we first propose a block-wise splitting method to divide large-scale network data into several subnetworks and distribute them among multiple workers. For simplicity, we assume the classical stochastic block model. Then, the DPL algorithm is iteratively implemented for the distributed optimization of the sum of the local pseudo-likelihood functions. At each iteration, the worker updates its local community labels and communicates with the master. The master then broadcasts the combined estimator to each worker for the new iterative steps. Based on the distributed system, DPL significantly reduces the computational complexity of the traditional pseudo-likelihood method using a single machine. Furthermore, to ensure statistical accuracy, we theoretically discuss the requirements of the worker sample size. Moreover, we extend the DPL method to estimate degree-corrected stochastic block models. The superior performance of the proposed distributed algorithm is demonstrated through extensive numerical studies and real data analysis.

2021 Object Quality Guided Feature Fusion for Person Re-identification
abstract
Person re-identification (Re-ID) is an essential task in computer vision, which aims to match a person of interest across multiple non-overlapping camera views. It is a fundamental challenging task because of the conflicts between large variations of samples and the limited scale of training sets. Data augmentation method based on generative adversarial network (GAN) is an efficient way to relieve this dilemma. However, existing methods do not consider how to keep identity information and filter the noise of the generated auxiliary samples during Re-ID training. In this paper, we propose object quality guided feature fusion network for person re-identification, which consists of a self-supervised object quality estimation module and a feature fusion module. Specifically, the former evaluates the quality of the auxiliary data to filter the noise and the disturbing features, while the later accomplishes the feature fusion based on object quality estimation in the collection-to-collection recognition manner to make full use of auxiliary data. Extensive performance analysis and experiments are conducted on two benchmark datasets (Market-1501 and DukeMTMC-reID) to show that our proposed approach outperforms or shows comparable results to the existing best performed methods.

2020 Segmentation of pulmonary vessels based on MSFM method
abstract
Accurate segmentation of pulmonary blood vessels from CT images is of great significance for lung disease detection and segmentation of other lung structures. Manual segmentation is difficult to accurately segment vascular tissue for various reasons. Therefore, in view of the existing problems and shortcomings of the existing lung vessel segmentation method, a more efficient lung vessel segmentation algorithm is proposed, that is, the multi-template fast marching method (MSFM algorithm). Firstly, it used the hole filling and maximum inter-class variance algorithm for preprocess. In the process, the lung parenchyma is extracted from the chest CT, and then the lung blood vessels are extracted in the lung parenchymal area using the MSFM algorithm. In the extraction process, the threshold and gradient are used to limit the progress of the process and the lung blood vessels are more accurately segmented. Through experimental verification, the accuracy of lung blood vessel segmentation based on MSFM algorithm is improved.

2019 Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Micro-Doppler Human Motion Classification via Feature Fusion
abstract
Micro-Doppler-based human motion classification has become a topical area of research recently. However, the current research is limited by the lack of labeled training data. Domain adaptation, namely, the ability to take advantage of knowledge from an available source data set and apply it to an unlabeled target data set, is useful in this situation. A typical strategy for this transfer learning technique is to extract domain-invariant feature representations. In this letter, an unsupervised domain adaptation method for micro-Doppler classification is proposed. Given no available measurement training samples, we creatively utilize the motion capture database as an auxiliary and adapt its interior knowledge to the measurement data set. To achieve domain-invariant features, three types of features are extracted and fused including low-level deep features from the convolutional neural network, empirical features, and statistical features. After feature fusion, a k-nearest neighbor classifier is applied to the measurement data to classify seven human activities. Experimental results show that our approach outperforms several state-of-the-art unsupervised domain adaptation methods. The impact of the output from different convolution layers is further investigated, and ablation studies of the efficacy of each feature are also carried out in this letter.
