| 2025 | A Kinematics Optimization Framework with Improved Computational Efficiency for Task-Based Optimum Design of Serial Manipulators in Cluttered EnvironmentsabstractIt is challenging to find optimum kinematic designs for non-standard robotic manipulators, e.g., medical, nuclear, and space manipulators, which are demanded to adapt to arbitrary complex tasks in constraints. Such design optimization can be modelled as a multi-dimensional non-convex optimization problem with nonlinear constrained conditions. However, it is non-trivial to ensure the essential reachability condition, i.e., the existence of continuous trajectories between demand positions for serial articulated manipulators, given complex spatial constraints, like obstacles and boundaries. Traditional solutions integrate standard motion planning or inverse kinematics algorithms within a kinematic-design optimization process, resulting in significant demand for time and computing resources. To accelerate design optimization at improved efficiency, we design a novel robust design framework built on a new kinematic design synthesis, which allows for simultaneously optimizing dimension and topology of a serial manipulator's kinematics for arbitrary tasks in constrained environments, using a generalised parametric kinematic model. Significantly, in contrast to standard solutions, we develop a novel computationally effective reachability verification method, which rapidly aborts infeasible motions by exploiting efficient collision checks, based on the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree (RRT) algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed design framework is verified and evaluated by comparing to baseline benchmarks. Results demonstrate the novel design framework can accelerate kinematic design optimization by an order of magnitude compared to the current state-of-the-art, and optimise link dimension and joint type simultaneously of serial robots for cluttered environments. | 2024 | Dynamics-Based Trajectory Planning for Vibration Suppression of a Flexible Long-Reach Robotic Manipulator SystemabstractWe address the unique challenge of vibration suppression for a flexible long-reach robotic manipulator system, namely, the through-wall deployment (TWD) system that is used in nuclear environments. This paper proposes a novel dynamics-based trajectory optimization approach, which minimizes both the acceleration and the jerk at the manipulator’s joints, as well as the vibrations of the flexible long-reach boom where the manipulator’s base is mounted. Firstly, we create an integrated model for the system dynamics based on the knowledge of the robotic manipulator and the acceleration data from the vibration tests. We then develop an original procedure for generating the high-order polynomial trajectory that guarantees the zero-boundary condition for a flexible number of optimization parameters and waypoints. Following the simulation of a multi-objective optimization scheme, the optimized trajectory is experimentally validated on the practical TWD system with around 28% vibration reduction on average compared to the benchmark. Importantly, this reduction is achieved without compromising on the average speed of motion. The methodology is transferable to a wider range of flexible robotic manipulator systems with similar characteristics. | 2022 | Adaptive Identifier-Critic-Based Optimal Tracking Control for Nonlinear Systems With Experimental ValidationabstractThis article presents and practically validates an identifier-critic-based approximate dynamic programming (ADP) method to online address the optimal tracking control problem for nonlinear continuous-time unknown systems. The imposed assumption on precisely known system dynamics is obviated via a neural network (NN) identifier. A static control is first adopted to retain the steady-state tracking response, while an optimal control derived via the ADP method is proposed to regulate the tracking error by minimizing a cost function. A critic NN is then trained online to obtain the solution of the associated Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation. The learning of the identifier NN and critic NN is performed online simultaneously by tailoring a novel adaptation method, which can guarantee the convergence of the estimated NN weights. Consequently, the critic NN can be used to construct the optimal control policy directly, such that the actor NN used in the previous ADP schemes is avoided. Simulations are performed to verify the suggested control, and experiments on a helicopter plant are carried out to show its feasibility and improved control response.
