| 2019 | RaSQL: Greater Power and Performance for Big Data Analytics with Recursive-aggregate-SQL on SparkabstractThanks to a simple SQL extension, Recursive-aggregate-SQL (RaSQL) can express very powerful queries and declarative algorithms, such as classical graph algorithms and data mining algorithms. A novel compiler implementation allows RaSQL to map declarative queries into one basic fixpoint operator supporting aggregates in recursive queries. A fully optimized implementation of this fixpoint operator leads to superior performance, scalability and portability. Thus, our RaSQL system, which extends Spark SQL with the before-mentioned new constructs and implementation techniques, matches and often surpasses the performance of other systems, including Apache Giraph, GraphX and Myria. | 2018 | RIOS: Runtime Integrated Optimizer for SparkabstractMany Data-Intensive Scalable Computing (DISC) systems do not support sophisticated cost-based query optimizers because they lack the necessary data statistics. Consequently many crucial optimizations, such as join order and plan selection, are not well supported in DISC systems. RIOS is a Runtime Integrated Optimizer for Spark that lazily binds to execution plans at runtime, after collecting the statistics needed to make more optimal decisions. We evaluate the efficacy of our approach and show that better plans can be derived at runtime, achieving more than an order-of-magnitude performance improvement compared to compile time generated plans produced by the Apache Spark rule-base optimizer. | 2009 | Finding the influence set through skylinesabstractGiven a set P of products, a set O of customers, and a product p ε P, a bichromatic reverse skyline query retrieves all the customers in O that do not find any other product in P to be absolutely better than p. More specifically, a customer o ε O is in the reverse skyline of p ε P if and only no other product in P better matches the preference of o on all dimensions. | 2009 | Distance-Based Representative SkylineabstractGiven an integer k, a representative skyline contains the k skyline points that best describe the tradeoffs among different dimensions offered by the full skyline. Although this topic has been previously studied, the existing solution may sometimes produce k points that appear in an arbitrarily tiny cluster, and therefore, fail to be representative. Motivated by this, we propose a new definition of representative skyline that minimizes the distance between a non-representative skyline point and its nearest representative. We also study algorithms for computing distance-based representative skylines. In 2D space, there is a dynamic programming algorithm that guarantees the optimal solution. For dimensionality at least 3, we prove that the problem is NP-hard, and give a 2-approximate polynomial time algorithm. Using a multidimensional access method, our algorithm can directly report the representative skyline, without retrieving the full skyline. We show that our representative skyline not only better captures the contour of the entire skyline than the previous method, but also can be computed much faster.
