| 2026 | AlCo: Efficient event-based object detection via Semantic-Geometry Alignment and Hierarchical Semantic CompensationabstractEvent cameras have emerged as a promising sensor for object detection in high-speed and high-dynamic-range scenarios. However, existing methods often struggle with the inherent spatiotemporal sparsity and noise of event data. In this paper, we propose a novel framework AlCo that integrates a Semantic-Geometry Al ignment Convolution (SGAC) and a Hierarchical Semantic Co mpensation (HSC) block. SGAC explicitly models geometric priors and semantic alignment to suppress noise and enhance structural consistency in early-stage features. The HSC block further employs a dual-branch strategy: a sparse branch with prototype-guided token selection and diversity-aware recycling to maintain efficiency, and a global branch to compensate for long-range contextual information. Extensive experiments on the Gen1 and 1Mpx datasets demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance while providing favorable FLOPs, latency, and memory trade-offs. | 2025 | Interpretable Face Anti-Spoofing: Enhancing Generalization with Multimodal Large Language ModelsabstractFace Anti-Spoofing (FAS) is essential for ensuring the security and reliability of facial recognition systems. Most existing FAS methods are formulated as binary classification tasks, providing confidence scores without interpretation. They exhibit limited generalization in out-of-domain scenarios, such as new environments or unseen spoofing types. In this work, we introduce a multimodal large language model (MLLM) framework for FAS, termed Interpretable Face Anti-Spoofing (I-FAS), which transforms the FAS task into an interpretable visual question answering (VQA) paradigm. Specifically, we propose a Spoof-aware Captioning and Filtering (SCF) strategy to generate high-quality captions for FAS images, enriching the model's supervision with natural language interpretations. To mitigate the impact of noisy captions during training, we develop a Lopsided Language Model (L-LM) loss function that separates loss calculations for judgment and interpretation, prioritizing the optimization of the former. Furthermore, to enhance the model's perception of global visual features, we design a Globally Aware Connector (GAC) to align multi-level visual representations with the language model. Extensive experiments on standard and newly devised One to Eleven cross-domain benchmarks, comprising 12 public datasets, demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods. | 2025 | A Syntactic Problem Solver Learning Landscape Structures for Clinical SchedulingabstractThis paper attempts to derive a mathematical formulation for real-practice clinical laboratory scheduling, and to present a syntactic problem solver by leveraging instances’ landscape structures to infer the most suitable search strategy. After formulating scheduling of medical tests as a distributed scheduling problem in heterogeneous, flexible job shop environment, we establish a mixed integer programming model to minimize mean test turnaround time. Preliminary landscape analysis sustains that these clinics-orientated scheduling instances are difficult to solve under the same search strategy. The search difficulty motivates the search for a syntactic problem solver where relatedness between domain’s syntactic features and search strategies help identify effective strategies. The challenge in designing a syntactic problem solver–which landscape features to choose as domain’s syntactic features to accurately reflect instance hardness under different search strategies–are addressed. Under various local search move operators, we investigate the changes in instance landscape structures and find that the single-move size for local search operators, local-global optima connectivity, landscape ruggedness and plateau size fairly predict the efficacy of the local searches. The above relationship is refined into a deterministic association between instance size and local search, thereby forming the syntactic problem solver. When faced with new instances, the solver automatically instantiates the best local search algorithm for various scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed syntactic solver excels not only in clinical laboratory scheduling problems but also in publicly available benchmark. Keyao Wang, Bo Liu 0008 |

| 2024 | Multi-Domain Incremental Learning for Face Presentation Attack DetectionabstractPrevious face Presentation Attack Detection (PAD) methods aim to improve the effectiveness of cross-domain tasks. However, in real-world scenarios, the original training data of the pre-trained model is not available due to data privacy or other reasons. Under these constraints, general methods for fine-tuning single-target domain data may lose previously learned knowledge, leading to a catastrophic forgetting problem. To address these issues, we propose a multi-domain incremental learning (MDIL) method for PAD, which not only learns knowledge well from the new domain but also maintains the performance of previous domains stably. Specifically, we propose an adaptive domain-specific experts (ADE) framework based on the vision transformer to preserve the discriminability of previous domains. Furthermore, an asymmetric classifier is designed to keep the output distribution of different classifiers consistent, thereby improving the generalization ability. Extensive experiments show that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to prior methods of incremental learning. Excitingly, under more stringent setting conditions, our method approximates or even outperforms the DA/DG-based methods. | 2023 | Cyclically Disentangled Feature Translation for Face Anti-spoofingabstractCurrent domain adaptation methods for face anti-spoofing leverage labeled source domain data and unlabeled target domain data to obtain a promising generalizable decision boundary. However, it is usually difficult for these methods to achieve a perfect domain-invariant liveness feature disentanglement, which may degrade the final classification performance by domain differences in illumination, face category, spoof type, etc. In this work, we tackle cross-scenario face anti-spoofing by proposing a novel domain adaptation method called cyclically disentangled feature translation network (CDFTN). Specifically, CDFTN generates pseudo-labeled samples that possess: 1) source domain-invariant liveness features and 2) target domain-specific content features, which are disentangled through domain adversarial training. A robust classifier is trained based on the synthetic pseudo-labeled images under the supervision of source domain labels. We further extend CDFTN for multi-target domain adaptation by leveraging data from more unlabeled target domains. Extensive experiments on several public datasets demonstrate that our proposed approach significantly outperforms the state of the art. | 2020 | Differentiating isoform functions with collaborative matrix factorizationabstractMOTIVATION: Isoforms are alternatively spliced mRNAs of genes. They can be translated into different functional proteoforms, and thus greatly increase the functional diversity of protein variants (or proteoforms). Differentiating the functions of isoforms (or proteoforms) helps understanding the underlying pathology of various complex diseases at a deeper granularity. Since existing functional genomic databases uniformly record the annotations at the gene-level, and rarely record the annotations at the isoform-level, differentiating isoform functions is more challenging than the traditional gene-level function prediction. RESULTS: Several approaches have been proposed to differentiate the functions of isoforms. They generally follow the multi-instance learning paradigm by viewing each gene as a bag and the spliced isoforms as its instances, and push functions of bags onto instances. These approaches implicitly assume the collected annotations of genes are complete and only integrate multiple RNA-seq datasets. As such, they have compromised performance. We propose a data integrative solution (called DisoFun) to Differentiate isoform Functions with collaborative matrix factorization. DisoFun assumes the functional annotations of genes are aggregated from those of key isoforms. It collaboratively factorizes the isoform data matrix and gene-term data matrix (storing Gene Ontology annotations of genes) into low-rank matrices to simultaneously explore the latent key isoforms, and achieve function prediction by aggregating predictions to their originating genes. In addition, it leverages the PPI network and Gene Ontology structure to further coordinate the matrix factorization. Extensive experimental results show that DisoFun improves the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve and area under the precision-recall curve of existing solutions by at least 7.7 and 28.9%, respectively. We further investigate DisoFun on four exemplar genes (LMNA, ADAM15, BCL2L1 and CFLAR) with known functions at the isoform-level, and observed that DisoFun can differentiate functions of their isoforms with 90.5% accuracy. | 2020 | Isoform function prediction based on bi-random walks on a heterogeneous networkabstractMOTIVATION: Alternative splicing contributes to the functional diversity of protein species and the proteoforms translated from alternatively spliced isoforms of a gene actually execute the biological functions. Computationally predicting the functions of genes has been studied for decades. However, how to distinguish the functional annotations of isoforms, whose annotations are essential for understanding developmental abnormalities and cancers, is rarely explored. The main bottleneck is that functional annotations of isoforms are generally unavailable and functional genomic databases universally store the functional annotations at the gene level. RESULTS: We propose IsoFun to accomplish Isoform Function prediction based on bi-random walks on a heterogeneous network. IsoFun firstly constructs an isoform functional association network based on the expression profiles of isoforms derived from multiple RNA-seq datasets. Next, IsoFun uses the available Gene Ontology annotations of genes, gene-gene interactions and the relations between genes and isoforms to construct a heterogeneous network. After this, IsoFun performs a tailored bi-random walk on the heterogeneous network to predict the association between GO terms and isoforms, thus accomplishing the prediction of GO annotations of isoforms. Experimental results show that IsoFun significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms and improves the area under the receiver-operating curve (AUROC) and the area under the precision-recall curve (AUPRC) by 17% and 44% at the gene-level, respectively. We further validated the performance of IsoFun on the genes ADAM15 and BCL2L1. IsoFun accurately differentiates the functions of respective isoforms of these two genes. | 2020 | NMFGO: Gene Function Prediction via Nonnegative Matrix Factorization with Gene OntologyabstractGene Ontology (GO) is a controlled vocabulary of terms that describe molecule function, biological roles, and cellular locations of gene products (i.e., proteins and RNAs), it hierarchically organizes more than 43,000 GO terms via the direct acyclic graph. A gene is generally annotated with several of these GO terms. Therefore, accurately predicting the association between genes and massive terms is a difficult challenge. To combat with this challenge, we propose an matrix factorization based approach called NMFGO. NMFGO stores the available GO annotations of genes in a gene-term association matrix and adopts an ontological structure based taxonomic similarity measure to capture the GO hierarchy. Next, it factorizes the association matrix into two low-rank matrices via nonnegative matrix factorization regularized with the GO hierarchy. After that, it employs a semantic similarity based k nearest neighbor classifier in the low-rank matrices approximated subspace to predict gene functions. Empirical study on three model species (S. cerevisiae, H. sapiens, and A. thaliana) shows that NMFGO is robust to the input parameters and achieves significantly better prediction performance than GIC, TO, dRW- kNN, and NtN, which were re-implemented based on the instructions of the original papers. The supplementary file and demo codes of NMFGO are available at http://mlda.swu.edu.cn/codes.php?name=NMFGO. Guoxian Yu, Keyao Wang, Guangyuan Fu, Maozu Guo 0001, Jun Wang 0035 |

| 2017 | EDA based probabilistic Memetic Algorithm for distributed blocking permutation flowshop scheduling with sequence dependent setup timeabstractDistributed permutation flowshop scheduling problem (DPFSP) is a typical NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem and represents an important area in multiple distributed production systems. In this study, both machine blocking and job sequence dependent setup time constraints are considered in DPFSP, which make the conventional model more suitable to the realistic situation. The combination with new constraints means a substantial increase in the complexity of the problem and the volatility of landscape, which sharply increase the solving difficulty. Probabilistic memetic framework (PrMF) is a novel MA framework which balances the exploration and exploitation by controlling the learning intensity of each individual. In this paper, an EDA-based PrMF algorithm, called EDAPrMF, is proposed to solve the DBPFSP with SDST, in which PrMF is modified and extended for distributed scheduling problems with two-layer encoding. Specifically, a novel solution matrix based distance matrix is defined for DBPFSP with SDST, which serves as a suitable measure between two feasible solutions and can also be connected with the probability matrix of EDA, the global search meme in PrMF. Meta-Lamarckian learning strategy is also equipped in PrMF to guide the local search direction. The experimental results and comparisons with existing algorithms show the efficiency of the proposed EDAPrMF in solving both small-scale and large-scale DBPFSP with SDSP and the effectiveness of PrMF in improve the search ability. | 2017 | Variable neighborhood based memetic algorithm for Just-in-Time distributed assembly permutation flowshop schedulingabstractDistributed Assembly Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem (DAPFSP) represents a widely-applied manufacturing pattern, which is formed by two relatively independent stages, i.e., processing stage and assembly stage. In this paper, we introduce the Just-in-Time (JIT) constraint between the two stages of the conventional DAPFSP to form the Just-in-Time DAPFSP (JIT-DAPFSP), with respect to minimizing the maximum weighted earliness/tardiness cost. A variable neighborhood search based Memetic Algorithm (VNS-MA) is proposed by incorporating several novel neighborhoods manipulating the factory assignment. Computational tests are carried out on 10 small-scale and 5 large-scale benchmark problems to compare the results of different operators and algorithms. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to model JIT constraints and objective in DAPFSP. Keyao Wang, Wenzhe Duan, Xiaoyi Feng, Bo Liu 0008 |

| 2016 | Variable neighborhood based memetic algorithm for distributed assembly permutation flowshopabstractThe Distributed Assembly Permutation Flowshop Scheduling Problem (DAPFSP) is a typical NP-hard optimization problem and represents an important area in multiple distributed production systems. This paper proposes a memetic algorithm based on Variable Neighborhood Search (VNS) for DAPFSP with the criterion to minimize the maximum completion time (i.e., makespan). Particularly, an efficient initialization based on the Nawaz-Enscore-Ham (NEH) heuristic is applied for sequencing the order of products. Then, several new neighborhoods (intra-product, inter-product) are proposed and incorporated into VNS for perturbation of the job assignment to factories, as well as the adjustment of job sequence in each factory. Simulation results and comparisons demonstrate that the Variable Neighborhood based Memetic Algorithm could yield satisfactory searching performances. Bo Liu 0008, Keyao Wang |
