2024 3D Optical Coherence Tomography image processing in BISCAP: characterization of biofilm structure and properties
abstract
MOTIVATION: BISCAP is a state-of-the-art tool for automatically characterizing biofilm images obtained from Optical Coherence Tomography. Limited availability of other software tools is reported in the field. BISCAP's first version processes 2D images only. Processing 3D images is a problem of greater scientific relevance since it deals with the entire structure of biofilms instead of their 2D slices. RESULTS: Building on the image-processing principles and algorithms proposed earlier for 2D images, these were adapted to the 3D case, and a more general implementation of BISCAP was developed. The primary goal concerns the extension of the initial methodology to incorporate the depth axis in 3D images; multiple improvements were also made to boost computational performance. The calculation of structural properties and visual outputs was extended to offer new insights into the 3D structure of biofilms. BISCAP was tested using 3D images of biofilms with different morphologies, consistently delivering accurate characterizations of 3D structures in a few minutes using standard laptop machines. Low user dependency is required for image analysis. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: BISCAP is available from https://github.com/diogonarciso/BISCAP. All images used in the tutorials and the validation examples are available from https://web.fe.up.pt/∼fgm/biscap3d.

2018 WGW4IIoT: Wireless Gateway for Industrial IoT
abstract
Digitalization of production processes is rather important to improve the industrial ecosystem. When implemented, such digitalization has positive impacts in the production value chain, from helping to choose the best raw materials to providing high quality products. However, adoption of technologies in industrial settings may not be straightforward given the associated challenges. To mitigate this inherent adoption reluctance and encourage the implementation of the Industry 4.0 vision, we developed the Wireless Gateway for Industrial IoT (WGW4IIoT) that allows easy adaptation to specific installation needs and further development upon identified future requirements in the industry context. To illustrate its potential, WGW4IIoT is validated in real industrial settings.

2016 A motion tracking solution for indoor localization using smartphones
abstract
As sensor-rich mobile devices became a commodity, more opportunities appeared for the creation of location-aware services. While GPS is a well established solution for outdoor localization, there is still no standard solution for localization indoors. This paper presents a novel accurate indoor positioning mechanism that is meant to run in common smartphones to be a readily and widely available solution. The system is based on multiple gait-model based filtering techniques for accurate movement quantification in combination with an advanced fused positioning mechanism that leverages sequences of opportunistic observations towards an accurate localization process. Magnetic field fluctuations, Wi-Fi readings and movement data are incrementally matched with a feature spot map containing multi-dimensional spatially-related features that characterize the building. A novel and convenient way of mapping the architectural and environmental properties of buildings is also introduced, which avoids the burden normally associated with the process. The system has been evaluated by multiple users in open and crowded spaces where overall median localization errors between 1.11 m and 1.68 m were obtained. While the reported errors are already satisfactory in the context of indoor localization, improvements may be readily achieved through the inclusion of additional reference features. High accuracy performance coupled with an opportunistic and infrastructure-free approach creates a very desirable solution for the indoor localization market doge.
