2023 ADATS: Adaptive RoI-Align based Transformer for End-to-End Text Spotting
abstract
Scene text spotting has attracted great attention in recent years. Compared with two-stage approaches that locate scene texts in the first stage and recognize them in the second stage, the advantages of joint location and recognition training are not fully explored. In this paper, we present an ADaptive RoI-Align based transformer for end-to-end Text Spotting (ADATS), which simultaneously locates and recognizes text with a single forward pass. By employing an Adaptive RoI-Align, the text features are extracted from the feature extraction network with the original aspect ratio, such that less information is lost during the alignment of arbitrarily-shaped scene text. Attention-based segmentation and recognition heads allow us to simultaneously optimize detection and recognition. Experiments on ICDAR 2015, MSRA-TD500, Total-Text, and CTW1500 demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

2022 Cross Pairwise Ranking for Unbiased Item Recommendation
abstract
Most recommender systems optimize the model on observed interaction data, which is affected by the previous exposure mechanism and exhibits many biases like popularity bias. The loss functions, such as the mostly used pointwise Binary Cross-Entropy and pairwise Bayesian Personalized Ranking, are not designed to consider the biases in observed data. As a result, the model optimized on the loss would inherit the data biases, or even worse, amplify the biases. For example, a few popular items take up more and more exposure opportunities, severely hurting the recommendation quality on niche items — known as the notorious Mathew effect.

2021 Self-Attention Based Text Knowledge Mining for Text Detection
abstract
Pre-trained models play an important role in deep learning based text detectors. However, most methods ignore the gap between natural images and scene text images and directly apply ImageNet for pre-training. To address such a problem, some of them firstly pre-train the model using a large amount of synthetic data and then fine-tune it on target datasets, which is task-specific and has limited generalization capability. In this paper, we focus on providing general pre-trained models for text detectors. Considering the importance of exploring text contents for text detection, we propose STKM (Self-attention based Text Knowledge Mining), which consists of a CNN Encoder and a Self-attention Decoder, to learn general prior knowledge for text detection from SynthText. Given only image level text labels, Self-attention Decoder directly decodes features extracted from CNN Encoder to texts without requirement of detection, which guides the CNN backbone to explicitly learn discriminative semantic representations ignored by previous approaches. After that, the text knowledge learned by the backbone can be transferred to various text detectors to significantly improve their detection performance (e.g., 5.89% higher F-measure for EAST on ICDAR15 dataset) without bells and whistles. 2021 Drone Image Stitching Using Local Mesh-Based Bundle Adjustment and Shape-Preserving Transform
abstract
This article proposes a strategy for drone image stitching using local mesh-based bundle adjustment and shape-preserving transform, which aims to effectively stitch multiple overlapping drone images into a natural panoramic image. Existing traditional methods using a simple homography cannot handle the situation that the input drone images have parallax effect, and the image mosaic result always suffers from artifacts. In order to achieve natural-looking stitching results without the above limitation, we divide the proposed method into the following steps. Starting from initial feature sets obtained by off-the-shelf feature extraction methods, we incorporate the parallax errors into an energy minimum framework and construct a robust alignment energy. This energy can be minimized efficiently based on local bundle adjustment and robust$3\sigma $principle, which could eliminate parallax effects and achieve accurate alignment. Then the seamless panoramic image is obtained by warping the target image and the source images onto the mesh plane directly. An image patch can be transformed by projective transformation (e.g., homography), which provides good alignment but may cause distortions. Consequently, combined with mesh-based shape-preserving transform, our proposed strategy can improve the naturalness of the results flexibly. Experiments show that our stitching strategy can eliminate parallax effects more effectively and achieve natural-looking results compared to other state-of-the-art methods.

2020 Feature Embedding Based Text Instance Grouping for Largely Spaced and Occluded Text Detection
abstract
A text instance can be easily detected as multiple ones due to the large space between texts/characters, curved shape and partial occlusion. In this paper, a feature embedding based text instance grouping algorithm is proposed to solve this problem. To learn the feature space, a TIEM (Text Instance Embedding Module) is trained to minimize the within instance scatter and maximize the between instance scatter. Similarity between different text instances are measured in the feature space and merged if they meet certain conditions. Experimental results show that our approach can effectively connect text regions that belong to the same text instance. Competitive performance of our approach has been achieved on CTW1500, Total-Text, IC15 and a subset consists of texts selected from the three datasets, with large spacing and occlusions.

2020 Drone Image Stitching Using Local Least Square Alignment
abstract
This paper proposes a strategy for drone image stitching using local least square alignment, which aims to effectively stitch multiple overlapping drone images into a natural panoramic image. Existing traditional methods using simple homography cannot handle the situation that the input drone images have parallax effect, and the mosaic result always suffers from artifacts. In order to achieve natural-looking stitching results without the above limitation, we divide the proposed method into the following two steps, namely, local least square alignment and global similarity constraint. Starting from initial feature sets obtained by traditional feature extraction methods, we construct a robust alignment energy based on parallax errors to adaptively eliminate parallax effects. The energy can be efficiently minimized used least square estimate. Combined with global similarity constraint, our proposed strategy can flexibly improve the naturalness of the results. Experiments show that our stitching strategy can more effectively eliminate parallax effects and achieve natural-looking results compared to other state-of-the-art methods.

2019 Drone Image Stitching Guided by Robust Elastic Warping and Locality Preserving Matching
abstract
Image stitching stitches multiple overlapping images into a seamless image according to the corresponding geometric relationship between the reference and source images. In this study, the parallax-tolerant image stitching method based on robust elastic warping is applied to the stitching of drone images, and locality-preserving feature matching is used to effectively remove outliers from the drone images. The method can be divided into three stages, namely, locality-preserving feature matching, robust elastic warping, and global projectivity preservation. First, a set of high- precision point matching is provided for a drone image, and local matching is used. Second, the robust elastic warping function eliminates the parallax error, and the input image is distorted according to the calculated deformation on the grid plane. Finally, the global projectivity-preserving method is applied to obtain high-precision result panoramas. Experiments on several sets of drone images demonstrate that our method can generate better panoramas over the competitors.
