| 2025 | Hyperspectral Image Super-Resolution Using Differentiation and Cross-Domain FeatureabstractThe rich spectral information in hyperspectral images (HSIs) requires effective joint extraction of spectral and spatial features for super-resolution (SR) tasks. To better capture spectral–spatial representations and restore edge textures, we propose the differentiation and cross-domain feature extraction network (DCDFENet) for HSI SR. Its core module enhances reconstruction by leveraging cross-domain interactions and differential features. DCDFE consists of three components: cross-domain and multiscale feature extraction (CDMSFE), which uses separated 3D convolutions and cross-domain connections to extract complementary features at multiple scales; spectral feature differentiation highlighting attention (SFDHA), which emphasizes significant spectral variations via differentiation and attention mechanisms; and edge feature extraction (EFE), which integrates Laplacian filtering and an extreme value feaure extraction (EVFE) to enhance spatial edge textures. Additionally, a loss function based on singular value decomposition further mitigates spectral distortion. Experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our method achieves superior performance on PSNR, MPSNR, SSIM, and SAM metrics. Jing Zhang 0054, Jingcheng Yu, Renjie Zheng, Yunsong Li 0001 |

| 2023 | Modeling Intra- and Inter-Modal Alignment with Optimal Transport for Visual DialogabstractVisual dialog aims to address a sequence of questions by effectively reasoning over both the dialog history and image content. While existing methods primarily focus on devising various attention mechanisms to capture interactions between different modalities, explicit signals encouraging semantic alignment in the visual dialog are seldom utilized. In this paper, we present a novel approach that leverages Optimal Transport to provide explicit and interpretable training signals to guide intra- and inter-modal alignment for the text and image in the visual dialog. Specifically, our approach consists of two kinds of alignment modules, Word-Word Alignment (WWA) and Region-Word Alignment (RWA). The WWA module learns latent relationships between a given question and a dialog history to align different concepts or pronouns that represent the same entity. As for the RWA module, it models the internal structures of text and images with graphs and performs graph matching for region-word alignment. We perform experiments on the benchmark dataset Visdial v1.0, and the experimental results show that our proposed approach achieves new state-of-the-art performance with respect to most metrics. | 2022 | A3T: Alignment-Aware Acoustic and Text Pretraining for Speech Synthesis and EditingabstractRecently, speech representation learning has improved many speech-related tasks such as speech recognition, speech classification, and speech-to-text translation. However, all the above tasks are in the direction of speech understanding, but for the inverse direction, speech synthesis, the potential of representation learning is yet to be realized, due to the challenging nature of generating high-quality speech. To address this problem, we propose our framework, Alignment-Aware Acoustic-Text Pretraining (A$^3$T), which reconstructs masked acoustic signals with text input and acoustic-text alignment during training. In this way, the pretrained model can generate high quality reconstructed spectrogram, which can be applied to the speech editing and unseen speaker TTS directly. Experiments show A$^3$T outperforms SOTA models on speech editing, and improves multi-speaker speech synthesis without the external speaker verification model. | 2021 | Decoupling Recognition and Transcription in Mandarin ASRabstractMuch of the recent literature on automatic speech recognition (ASR) is taking an end-to-end approach. Unlike English where the writing system is closely related to sound, Chinese characters (Hanzi) represent meaning, not sound. We propose factoring audio → Hanzi into two sub-tasks: (1) audio → Pinyin and (2) Pinyin → Hanzi, where Pinyin is a system of phonetic transcription of standard Chinese. Factoring the audio → Hanzi task in this way achieves 3.9% CER (character error rate) on the Aishell-1 corpus, the best result reported on this dataset so far. | 2021 | Improving Simultaneous Translation by Incorporating Pseudo-References with Fewer ReorderingsabstractSimultaneous translation is vastly different from full-sentence translation, in the sense that it starts translation before the source sentence ends, with only a few words delay. However, due to the lack of large-scale, high-quality simultaneous translation datasets, most such systems are still trained on conventional fullsentence bitexts. This is far from ideal for the simultaneous scenario due to the abundance of unnecessary long-distance reorderings in those bitexts. We propose a novel method that rewrites the target side of existing fullsentence corpora into simultaneous-style translation.Experiments on Zh!En and Ja!En simultaneous translation show substantial improvements (up to +2.7 BLEU) with the addition of these generated pseudo-references. | 2021 | Fused Acoustic and Text Encoding for Multimodal Bilingual Pretraining and Speech TranslationabstractRecently, representation learning for text and speech has successfully improved many language related tasks. However, all existing methods suffer from two limitations: (a) they only learn from one input modality, while a unified representation for both speech and text is needed by tasks such as end-to-end speech translation, and as a result, (b) they can not exploit various large-scale text and speech data and their performance is limited by the scarcity of parallel speech translation data. To address these problems, we propose a Fused Acoustic and Text Masked Language Model (FAT-MLM) which jointly learns a unified representation for both acoustic and text input from various types of corpora including parallel data for speech recognition and machine translation, and even pure speech and text data. Within this cross-modal representation learning framework, we further present an end-to-end model for Fused Acoustic and Text Speech Translation (FAT-ST). Experiments on three translation directions show that by fine-tuning from FAT-MLM, our proposed speech translation models substantially improve translation quality by up to +5.9 BLEU. | 2021 | KB-Tree: Learnable and Continuous Monte-Carlo Tree Search for Autonomous Driving PlanningabstractIn this paper, we present a novel learnable and continuous Monte-Carlo Tree Search method, named as KB-Tree, for motion planning in autonomous driving. The proposed method utilizes an asymptotical PUCB based on Kernel Regression (KR-AUCB) as a novel UCB variant, to improve the exploitation and exploration performance. In addition, we further optimize the sampling in continuous space by adapting Bayesian Optimization (BO) in the selection process of MCTS. Moreover, we use a customized Graph Neural Network (GNN) as our feature extractor to improve the learning performance. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to apply the continuous MCTS method in autonomous driving. To validate our method, we conduct extensive experiments under several weakly and strongly interactive scenarios. The results show that our proposed method performs well in all tasks, and outperforms the learning-based continuous MCTS method and the state-of-the-art Reinforcement Learning (RL) baseline. | 2020 | Simultaneous Translation Policies: From Fixed to AdaptiveabstractAdaptive policies are better than fixed policies for simultaneous translation, since they can flexibly balance the tradeoff between translation quality and latency based on the current context information. But previous methods on obtaining adaptive policies either rely on complicated training process, or underperform simple fixed policies. We design an algorithm to achieve adaptive policies via a simple heuristic composition of a set of fixed policies.Experiments on Chinese→English and German→English show that our adaptive policies can outperform fixed ones by up to 4 BLEU points for the same latency, and more surprisingly, it even surpasses the BLEU score of full-sentence translation in the greedy mode (and very close to beam mode), but with much lower latency. | 2020 | Opportunistic Decoding with Timely Correction for Simultaneous TranslationabstractSimultaneous translation has many important application scenarios and attracts much attention from both academia and industry recently. Most existing frameworks, however, have difficulties in balancing between the translation quality and latency, i.e., the decoding policy is usually either too aggressive or too conservative. We propose an opportunistic decoding technique with timely correction ability, which always (over-)generates a certain mount of extra words at each step to keep the audience on track with the latest information. At the same time, it also corrects, in a timely fashion, the mistakes in the former overgenerated words when observing more source context to ensure high translation quality.Experiments show our technique achieves substantial reduction in latency and up to +3.1 increase in BLEU, with revision rate under 8% in Chinese-to-English and English-to-Chinese translation. | 2019 | Simultaneous Translation with Flexible Policy via Restricted Imitation LearningabstractSimultaneous translation is widely useful but remains one of the most difficult tasks in NLP.Previous work either uses fixed-latency policies, or train a complicated two-staged model using reinforcement learning. We propose a much simpler single model that adds a "delay" token to the target vocabulary, and design a restricted dynamic oracle to greatly simplify training.Experiments on Chinese↔English simultaneous translation show that our work leads to flexible policies that achieve better BLEU scores and lower latencies compared to both fixed and RL-learned policies. | 2019 | Robust and Efficient Vehicles Motion Estimation with Low-Cost Multi-Camera and Odometer-GyroscopeabstractIn this paper, we present a robust and efficient estimation approach with multi-camera, odometer and gyroscope. Robust initialization, tightly-coupled optimization estimator and multi-camera loop-closure detection are utilized in the proposed approach. In initialization, the measurements of odometer and gyroscope are used to compute scale, and then estimate the bias of sensors. In estimator, the pre-integration of odometer and gyroscope is derived and combined with the measurements of multi-camera to estimate the motion in a tightly-coupled optimization framework. In loop-closure detection, a connection between different cameras of the vehicle can be built, which significantly improve the success rate of loop-closure detection. The proposed algorithm is validated in multiple real-world datasets collected in different places, time, weather and illumination. Experimental results show that the proposed approach can estimate the motion of vehicles robustly and efficiently. Wenlong Ye, Renjie Zheng, Fangqiang Zhang, Zizhou Ouyang, Yong Liu 0007 |

| 2019 | A Robust Stereo Semi-direct SLAM System Based on Hybrid PyramidabstractWe propose a hybrid pyramid based approach to fuse the direct and indirect methods in visual SLAM, to allow robust localization under various situations including large-baseline motion, low-texture environment, and various illumination changes. In our approach, we first calculate coarse inter-frame pose estimation by matching the feature points. Subsequently, we use both direct image alignment and a multiscale pyramid method, for refining the previous estimation to attain better precision. Furthermore, we perform online photometric calibration along with pose estimation, to reduce un-modelled errors. To evaluate our approach, we conducted various real-world experiments on both public datasets and self-collected ones, by implementing a full SLAM system with the proposed methods. The results show that our system improves both localization accuracy and robustness by a wide margin. Xiangrui Zhao, Renjie Zheng, Wenlong Ye, Yong Liu 0007 |

| 2018 | Multi-Reference Training with Pseudo-References for Neural Translation and Text GenerationabstractNeural text generation, including neural machine translation, image captioning, and summarization, has been quite successful recently. However, during training time, typically only one reference is considered for each example, even though there are often multiple references available, e.g., 4 references in NIST MT evaluations, and 5 references in image captioning data.We first investigate several different ways of utilizing multiple human references during training. But more importantly, we then propose an algorithm to generate exponentially many pseudo-references by first compressing existing human references into lattices and then traversing them to generate new pseudo-references.These approaches lead to substantial improvements over strong baselines in both machine translation (+1.5 BLEU) and image captioning (+3.1 BLEU / +11.7 CIDEr). | 2018 | Same Representation, Different Attentions: Shareable Sentence Representation Learning from Multiple TasksabstractDistributed representation plays an important role in deep learning based natural language processing. However, the representation of a sentence often varies in different tasks, which is usually learned from scratch and suffers from the limited amounts of training data. In this paper, we claim that a good sentence representation should be invariant and can benefit the various subsequent tasks. To achieve this purpose, we propose a new scheme of information sharing for multi-task learning. More specifically, all tasks share the same sentence representation and each task can select the task-specific information from the shared sentence representation with attention mechanisms. The query vector of each task's attention could be either static parameters or generated dynamically. We conduct extensive experiments on 16 different text classification tasks, which demonstrate the benefits of our architecture. Source codes of this paper are available on Github. | 2017 | Topic Model-Based Road Network Inference from Massive TrajectoriesabstractRecent years witnessed popular use of various mobile devices, e.g., smart phones, vehicle networks and wearable watches. Such mobile devices generate massive trajectory data, and literature have proposed various algorithms to leverage the trajectory data for map inference. Unfortunately, such algorithms are hard to achieve both high map quality and computation efficiency. In this paper, we propose a solution framework to infer road network maps with high quality and efficiency. The key of our map inference is to divide map extent into smaller cells and maintain a binary cell-trajectory matrix. The binary matrix determines whether or not a trajectory passes a cell. We infer the importance of each cell from the matrix using a popular topic model (e.g., LDA [13] and pLSA [8]). Based on such computed importance, we next infer representative points and road segments to derive a road network map. Our extensive experiments on real data sets verify that the proposed inference algorithm can achieve higher map quality and meanwhile 1.5 ×, 6.8 × and 280 × shorter running time, when compared with three state of the arts including three representative work [4], [7], [14].
