| 2023 | LeaFTL: A Learning-Based Flash Translation Layer for Solid-State DrivesabstractIn modern solid-state drives (SSDs), the indexing of flash pages is a critical component in their storage controllers. It not only affects the data access performance, but also determines the efficiency of the precious in-device DRAM resource. A variety of address mapping schemes and optimizations have been proposed. However, most of them were developed with human-driven heuristics. Jinghan Sun, Shaobo Li 0005, Yunxin Sun 0001, Dejan Vucinic, Jian Huang 0006 |

| 2020 | Effective time step restrictions for explicit MPM simulationabstractAbstract Time steps for explicit MPM simulation in computer graphics are often selected by trial and error due to the challenges in automatically selecting stable time step sizes. Our time integration scheme uses time step restrictions that take into account forces, collisions, and even grid‐to‐particle transfers calculated near the end of the time step. We propose a novel set of time step restrictions that allow a time step to be selected that is stable, efficient to compute, and not too far from optimal. We derive the general solution for the sound speed in nonlinear isotropic hyperelastic materials, which we use to enforce the classical CFL time step restriction. We identify a single‐particle instability in explicit MPM integration and propose a corresponding time step restriction in the fluid case. We also propose a reflection‐based boundary condition for domain walls that supports separation and accurate Coulomb friction while preventing particles from penetrating the domain walls. | 2019 | CircuitStyle: A System for Peripherally Reinforcing Best Practices in Hardware ComputingabstractInstructors of hardware computing face many challenges including maintaining awareness of student progress, allocating their time adequately between lecturing and helping individual students, and keeping students engaged even while debugging problems. Based on formative interviews with 5 electronics instructors, we found that many circuit style behaviors could help novice users prevent or efficiently debug common problems. Drawing inspiration from the software engineering practice of coding style, these circuit style behaviors consist of best-practices and guidelines for implementing circuit prototypes that do not interfere with the functionality of the circuit, but help a circuit be more readable, less error-prone, and easier to debug. To examine if these circuit style behaviors could be peripherally enforced, aid an in-person instructor's ability to facilitate a workshop, and not monopolize instructor's attention, we developed CircuitStyle, a teaching aid for in-person hardware computing workshops. To evaluate the effectiveness of our tool, we deployed our system in an in-person maker-space workshop. The instructor appreciated CircuitStyle's ability to provide a broad understanding of the workshop's progress and the potential for our system to help instructors of various backgrounds better engage and understand the needs of their classroom. | 2018 | Spatial Pyramid Dilated Network for Pulmonary Nodule Malignancy ClassificationabstractLung cancer has been the most prevalent cancer in the world and an effective way to diagnose the cancer at the early stage is to detect the pulmonary nodule by computer-aided system. However, the size of the pulmonary nodules varies and the one with small diameter is generally one of the most difficult cases to diagnose. Under this condition, traditional convolution network based nodule classification methods fail to achieve satisfied result due to the miss of tiny but vital features by the pooling operation. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel 3D spatial pyramid dilated convolution network to classify the malignancy of the pulmonary nodules. Instead of using the pooling layers, we utilize the 3D dilated convolution to capture and preserve more detailed characteristic information of the nodules. Moreover, a multiple receptive field fusion strategy is applied to extract the multi-scale features from the nodule CT images. Extensive experimental results show that our model achieves a better result with an accuracy of 88.6% which outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.
