2020 Two-Stage Automobile Insurance Fraud Detection by Using Optimized Fuzzy C-Means Clustering and Supervised Learning
abstract
A novel two-stage automobile insurance fraud detection system is proposed that initially extracts a test set from the original imbalanced insurance dataset. A genetic algorithm based optimized fuzzy c-means clustering is then applied on the remaining data set for undersampling the majority samples by eliminating the outliers among them. Thereafter, the detection of the fraudulent claims occurs in two stages. In the first stage, each insurance record is passed to the clustering module that identifies the claim as genuine, malicious, or suspicious. The genuine and malicious samples are removed and only the suspicious instances are further scrutinized in the second stage by four trained supervised classifiers − Decision Tree, Support Vector Machine, Group Method for Data Handling and Multi-Layer Perceptron individually for final decision making. Extensive experiments and comparative analysis with another recent approach using a real-world automobile insurance dataset justifies the effectiveness of the proposed system.

2016 SQLiDDS: SQL injection detection using document similarity measure
abstract
SQL injection attack has been a major security threat to web applications for over a decade. Now a days, attackers use automated tools to discover vulnerable websites from search engines and launch attacks on multiple websites simultaneously. Being extremely heterogeneous in nature, accurate run-time detection of SQL injection attacks, particularly those previously unseen, is still a challenge using regular-expression or parse-tree matching techniques suggested in the literature. In this paper, we present a novel approach for real-time detection of SQL injection attacks by applying document similarity measure on run-time queries after normalizing them into sentence-like form. The proposed approach acts as a database firewall and can protect multiple web applications using the database server. With additional inputs from human expert, the system can also become more robust over time. We implemented the approach in a tool named SQLiDDS and the experimental results are very encouraging. The approach can effectively detect all types of SQL injection attacks and previously unseen attacks with substantial accuracy yet negligible impact on overall performance of web applications. The tool was built with PHP and tested on web applications built with PHP and MySQL, but it can be adapted to other platforms with minimal changes.

2009 Detection of intrusive activity in databases by combining multiple evidences and belief update
abstract
Abstract — In this paper, we propose an innovative approach for database intrusion detection which combines evidences from current as well as past behavior of users. It consists of four components, namely, rule-based component, belief combination component, security sensitive history database component and Bayesian learning component. The rule-based component consists of a set of well-defined rules which give independent evidences about a transaction’s behavior. An extension of Dempster-Shafer’s theory is used to combine multiple such evidences and an initial belief is computed. First level inferences are made about the transaction depending on this initial belief. Once the transaction is found to be suspicious, belief is updated according to its similarity with malicious or genuine transaction history using Bayesian learning. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed intrusion detection system can effectively detect intrusive attacks in databases without raising too many false alarms. 2009 BLAST-SSAHA Hybridization for Credit Card Fraud Detection
abstract
A phenomenal growth in the number of credit card transactions, especially for online purchases, has recently led to a substantial rise in fraudulent activities. Implementation of efficient fraud detection systems has thus become imperative for all credit card issuing banks to minimize their losses. In real life, fraudulent transactions are interspersed with genuine transactions and simple pattern matching is not often sufficient to detect them accurately. Thus, there is a need for combining both anomaly detection as well as misuse detection techniques. In this paper, we propose to use two-stage sequence alignment in which a profile analyzer (PA) first determines the similarity of an incoming sequence of transactions on a given credit card with the genuine cardholder's past spending sequences. The unusual transactions traced by the profile analyzer are next passed on to a deviation analyzer (DA) for possible alignment with past fraudulent behavior. The final decision about the nature of a transaction is taken on the basis of the observations by these two analyzers. In order to achieve online response time for both PA and DA, we suggest a new approach for combining two sequence alignment algorithms BLAST and SSAHA.
