| 2024 | Scaling Up LLM Reviews for Google Ads Content ModerationabstractLarge language models (LLMs) are powerful tools for content moderation, but their inference costs and latency make them prohibitive for casual use on large datasets, such as the Google Ads repository. This study proposes a method for scaling up LLM reviews for content moderation in Google Ads. First, we use heuristics to select candidates via filtering and duplicate removal, and create clusters of ads for which we select one representative ad per cluster. We then use LLMs to review only the representative ads. Finally, we propagate the LLM decisions for the representative ads back to their clusters. This method reduces the number of reviews by more than 3 orders of magnitude while achieving a 2x recall compared to a baseline non-LLM model. The success of this approach is a strong function of the representations used in clustering and label propagation; we found that cross-modal similarity representations yield better results than uni-modal representations. | 2016 | Queueing and glueing for optimal partitioning (functional pearl)abstractThe queueing-glueing algorithm is the nickname we give to an algorithmic pattern that provides amortised linear time solutions to a number of optimal list partition problems that have a peculiar property: at various moments we know that two of three candidate solutions could be optimal. The algorithm works by keeping a queue of lists, glueing them from one end, while chopping from the other end, hence the name. We give a formal derivation of the algorithm, and demonstrate it with several non-trivial examples. Shin-Cheng Mu, Yu-Hsi Chiang, Yu-Han Lyu |

| 2015 | Metric cells: Towards complete search for optimal trajectoriesabstractThis paper presents a definition of convexity useful for describing local optimality in configuration spaces, proves that finding convex regions is relatively easy, and presents an algorithm for approximating the free configuration space using a set of such convex regions. The paper examines simple but interesting systems: serial planar arms with revolute joints, and a Reeds-Shepp car. The paper experimentally explores an approach for finding good (although not necessarily optimal) trajectories using the derived data structure. Devin J. | 2014 | The bench mover's problem: Minimum-time trajectories, with cost for switching between controlsabstractAnalytical results describing the optimal trajectories for general classes of robot systems have proven elusive, in part because the optimal trajectories for a complex system may not exist, or may be computed only numerically from differential equations. This paper studies a simpler optimization problem: finding an optimal sequence and optimal durations of motion primitives (simple preprogrammed actions) to reach a goal. By adding a fixed cost for each switch between primitives, we ensure that optimal trajectories exist and are well-behaved. To demonstrate this approach, we prove some general results that geometrically characterize time-optimal trajectories for rigid bodies in the plane with costly switches (allowing comparison with previous analysis of optimal motion using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle), and also present a complete analytical solution for a problem of moving a heavy park bench by rotating the bench around each end point in sequence. | 2012 | Approximately optimal auctions for selling privacy when costs are correlated with dataabstractWe consider a scenario in which a database stores sensitive data of users and an analyst wants to estimate statistics of the data. The users may suffer a cost when their data are used in which case they should be compensated. The analyst wishes to get an accurate estimate, while the users want to maximize their utility. We want to design a mechanism that can estimate statistics accurately without compromising users' privacy. Lisa Fleischer, Yu-Han Lyu |
