2023 Object-Oriented Option Framework for Robotics Manipulation in Clutter
abstract
Domestic service robots are becoming increasingly popular due to their ability to help people with household tasks. These robots often encounter the challenge of manipulating objects in cluttered environments (MoC), which is difficult due to the complexity of effective planning and control. Previous solutions involved designing specific action primitives and planning paradigms. However, the pre-coded action primitives can limit the agility and task-solving scope of robots. In this paper, we propose a general approach for MoC called the Object-Oriented Option Framework (O3F), which uses the option framework (OF) to learn planning and control. The standard OF discovers options from scratch based on reinforcement learning, which can lead to collapsed options and hurt learning. To address this limitation, O3F introduces the concept of an object-oriented option space for OF, which focuses specifically on object movement and overcomes the challenges associated with collapsed options. Based on this, we train an object-oriented option planner to determine the option to execute and a universal object-oriented option executor to complete the option. Simulation experiments on the Ginger XR1 robot and robot arm show that O3F is generally applicable to various types of robot and manipulation tasks. Furthermore, O3F achieves success rates of 72.4% and 90% in grasping and object collecting tasks, respectively, significantly outperforming baseline methods.

2022 UNET-TTS: Improving Unseen Speaker and Style Transfer in One-Shot Voice Cloning
abstract
One-shot voice cloning aims to transform speaker voice and speaking style in speech synthesized from a text-to-speech (TTS) system, where only a shot recording from the target reference speech can be used. Out-of-domain transfer is still a challenging task, and one important aspect that impacts the accuracy and similarity of synthetic speech is the conditional representations carrying speaker or style cues extracted from the limited references. In this paper, we present a novel one-shot voice cloning algorithm called Unet-TTS that has good generalization ability for unseen speakers and styles. Based on a skip-connected U-net structure, the new model can efficiently discover speaker-level and utterance-level spectral feature details from the reference audio, enabling accurate inference of complex acoustic characteristics as well as imitation of speaking styles into the synthetic speech. According to both subjective and objective evaluations of similarity, the new model outperforms both speaker embedding and unsupervised style modeling (GST) approaches on an unseen emotional corpus.

2022 Improved Task Space Locomotion Controller for a Quadruped Robot with Parallel Mechanisms
abstract
In this work, an advanced quadruped robot with abundant kinematic loops and passive joints is introduced. Due to the existence of many closed chains, the robot dynamic model is quite complex, and is derived using the Gauss's principle of least constraint. To explicitly consider the loop-closure constraints, we propose a task-space inverse dynamics based approach to obtain the robot locomotion controller. Besides, to meet the demand of high frequency (≥ 500Hz) in controller, an alternative method is provided. It uses the projected dynamics to find an analytical mapping from the desired contact force to the desired torque of actuators under full consideration of passive joints and loop-closure constraints. The effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithms in this paper have been validated by simulation with a reliable physical engine MuJoCo.

2019 A Fog Robotic System for Dynamic Visual Servoing
abstract
Cloud Robotics is a paradigm where multiple robots are connected to cloud services via Internet to access “unlimited” computation power, at the cost of network communication. However, due to limitations such as network latency and variability, it is difficult to control dynamic, human compliant service robots directly from the cloud. In this work, we combine cloud robotics with an agile edge device to build a Fog Robotic system by leveraging an asynchronous protocol with a “heartbeat” signal. We use the system to enable robust teleoperation of a dynamic self-balancing robot from the cloud. We use the system to pick up boxes from static locations, a task commonly performed in warehouse logistics. To make cloud teleoperation more intuitive and efficient, we program a cloud-based image based visual servoing (IBVS) module to automatically assist the cloud teleoperator during the object pickups. Visual feedbacks, including apriltag recognition and tracking, are performed in the cloud to emulate a Fog Robotic object recognition system for IBVS. We demonstrate the feasibility of a dynamic real-time automation system using this cloud-edge hybrid design, which opens up possibilities of deploying dynamic robotic control with deep-learning recognition systems in Fog Robotics. Finally, we show that Fog Robotics enables the self-balancing service robot to pick up a box automatically from a person under unstructured environments.

2019 A Unified Framework for Mutual Improvement of SLAM and Semantic Segmentation
abstract
This paper presents a novel framework for simultaneously implementing localization and segmentation, which are two of the most important vision-based tasks for robotics. While the goals and techniques used for them were considered to be different previously, we show that by making use of the intermediate results of the two modules, their performance can be enhanced at the same time. Our framework is able to handle both the instantaneous motion and long-term changes of instances in localization with the help of the segmentation result, which also benefits from the refined 3D pose information. We conduct experiments on various datasets, and prove that our framework works effectively on improving the precision and robustness of the two tasks and outperforms existing localization and segmentation algorithms.

2016 WNSpell: a WordNet-Based Spell Corrector
abstract
This paper presents a standalone spell corrector, WNSpell, based on and written for WordNet.It is aimed at generating the best possible suggestion for a mistyped query but can also serve as an all-purpose spell corrector. The spell corrector consists of a standard initial correction system, which evaluates word entries using a multifaceted approach to achieve the best results, and a semantic recognition system, wherein given a related word input, the system will adjust the spelling suggestions accordingly. Both feature significant performance improvements over current context-free spell correctors.
