| 2025 | Design and Implement of Large-scale Tail-sitter VTOL UAVabstractWe present the design and implementation of a large-scale tail-sitter aircraft with vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capabilities. The aircraft was designed with an H-shaped configuration and incorporated canards to enhance longitudinal stability. The structural design was optimized to balance mechanical strength and lightweight construction. Furthermore, the actuation system comprised four motors and eight servos, providing the aircraft with high maneuverability. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and wind tunnel tests were conducted to characterize the full envelope aerodynamics of the aircraft. To address the engineering challenges associated with increased scale, we developed a control framework applicable to the entire flight envelope. The performance and reliability of the proposed system were validated by extensive simulation studies and outdoor flight experiments. Zhixiong Xu, Guangwei Wen |

| 2024 | Online Optimization Method of Learning Process for Meta-LearningabstractAbstract Meta-learning is a pivotal and potentially influential machine learning approach to solve challenging problems in reinforcement learning. However, the costly hyper-parameter tuning for training stability of meta-learning is a known shortcoming and currently a hotspot of research. This paper addresses this shortcoming by introducing an online and easily trainable hyper-parameter optimization approach, called Meta Parameters Learning via Meta-Learning (MPML), to combine online hyper-parameter adjustment scheme into meta-learning algorithm, which reduces the need to tune hyper-parameters. Specifically, a basic learning rate for each training task is put forward. Besides, the proposed algorithm dynamically adapts multiple basic learning rate and a shared meta-learning rate through conducting gradient descent alongside the initial optimization steps. In addition, the sensitivity with respect to hyper-parameter choices in the proposed approach are also discussed compared with model-agnostic meta-learning method. The experimental results on reinforcement learning problems demonstrate MPML algorithm is easy to implement and delivers more highly competitive performance than existing meta-learning methods on a diverse set of challenging control tasks. | 2022 | Meeting-Merging-Mission: A Multi-robot Coordinate Framework for Large-Scale Communication-Limited ExplorationabstractThis letter presents a complete framework Meeting-Merging-Mission for multi-robot exploration under communication restriction. Considering communication is limited in both bandwidth and range in the real world, we propose a lightweight environment presentation method and an efficient cooperative exploration strategy. For lower bandwidth, each robot uses specific polytopes to maintain free space and to generate Super Frontier Information (SFI), which serves as the source for exploration decision-making. To reduce repeated exploration, we develop a mission-based protocol that drives robots to share collected information in stable rendezvous. We also design a complete path planning scheme for both centralized and decentralized cases. To validate that our framework is practical and generic, we present an extensive benchmark and deploy our system into multi-UGV and multi-UAV platforms. | 2022 | Fast Task Adaptation Based on the Combination of Model-Based and Gradient-Based Meta LearningabstractDeep reinforcement learning (DRL) recently has attained remarkable results in various domains, including games, robotics, and recommender system. Nevertheless, an urgent problem in the practical application of DRL is fast adaptation. To this end, this article proposes a new and versatile metalearning approach called fast task adaptation via metalearning (FTAML), which leverages the strengths of the model-based methods and gradient-based metalearning methods for training the initial parameters of the model, such that the model is able to efficiently master unseen tasks with a little amount of data from the tasks. The proposed algorithm makes it possible to separate task optimization and task identification, specifically, the model-based learner helps to identify the pattern of a task, while the gradient-based metalearner is capable of consistently improving the performance with only a few gradient update steps through making use of the task embedding produced by the model-based learner. In addition, the choice of network for the model-based learner in the proposed method is also discussed, and the performance of networks with different depths is explored. Finally, the simulation results on reinforcement learning problems demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms compared metalearning algorithms and delivers a new state-of-the-art performance on a variety of challenging control tasks. | 2019 | Deep Reinforcement Learning via Past-Success Directed ExplorationabstractThe balance between exploration and exploitation has always been a core challenge in reinforcement learning. This paper proposes “past-success exploration strategy combined with Softmax action selection”(PSE-Softmax) as an adaptive control method for taking advantage of the characteristics of the online learning process of the agent to adapt exploration parameters dynamically. The proposed strategy is tested on OpenAI Gym with discrete and continuous control tasks, and the experimental results show that PSE-Softmax strategy delivers better performance than deep reinforcement learning algorithms with basic exploration strategies.
