HPFTN: Hierarchical Progressive Fusion Transformer Network for Video DenoisingabstractThis paper presents a simple yet effective approach to modeling space-time correspondences in the context of video denoising. Unlike most existing approaches, our method, namely HPFTN, can operate end-to-end on consecutive frames without motion estimation. To do so, the proposed hierarchical patch matching module uses a multiple scales correspondence matching scheme to effectively build correspondences between neighbor frames and the current frame, lowering the computational cost. The progressive feature fusion module further enhances the current frame representation ability by extensively exploiting spatial-temporal correlations from multiple frames on patch level. Finally, the pyramid transformer reconstruction module efficiently leverages both high-level semantic and low-level fine-grained detailed features to predict clean video frames. Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments validate the effectiveness of our proposed model. Our source code will be released. Shuaitao Zhang, Di Xie, Shiliang Pu

Effcient Shift Network in Denoising-Friendly Space for Real Noise RemovalabstractRecently, following the success of neural networks, image denoising has achieved great improvements. However, it is challenging to construct an efficient denoising model with excellent performance and less computation. In this paper, we propose an extremely lightweight framework to remove real image noise in denoising-friendly space. Specif-ically, we apply the wavelet transform to project the noisy image and feature maps into low and high frequency domain, which decouples the noise information from the clean ones to a certain extent, thereby reducing the difficulty of denoising task. In addition, we further introduce a lightweight op-erator called Grouped Shift Module (GSM) into our denoising network, hence much heavy computation can be saved. Experimental results on the current benchmark demonstrate that our Wavelet Shift Denoising Network (WSNet) even achieves PSNR 39.28 dB with only 3G FLOPs on the SIDD benchmark. | 2021 | Towards Robust Visual Information Extraction in Real World: New Dataset and Novel SolutionabstractVisual Information Extraction (VIE) has attracted considerable attention recently owing to its various advanced applications such as document understanding, automatic marking and intelligent education. Most existing works decoupled this problem into several independent sub-tasks of text spotting (text detection and recognition) and information extraction, which completely ignored the high correlation among them during optimization. In this paper, we propose a robust Visual Information Extraction System (VIES) towards real-world scenarios, which is an unified end-to-end trainable framework for simultaneous text detection, recognition and information extraction by taking a single document image as input and outputting the structured information. Specifically, the information extraction branch collects abundant visual and semantic representations from text spotting for multimodal feature fusion and conversely, provides higher-level semantic clues to contribute to the optimization of text spotting. Moreover, regarding the shortage of public benchmarks, we construct a fully-annotated dataset called EPHOIE (https://github.com/HCIILAB/EPHOIE), which is the first Chinese benchmark for both text spotting and visual information extraction. EPHOIE consists of 1,494 images of examination paper head with complex layouts and background, including a total of 15,771 Chinese handwritten or printed text instances. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, our VIES shows significant superior performance on the EPHOIE dataset and achieves a 9.01% F-score gain on the widely used SROIE dataset under the end-to-end scenario. | 2020 | EraseNet: End-to-End Text Removal in the WildabstractScene text removal has attracted increasing research interests owing to its valuable applications in privacy protection, camera-based virtual reality translation, and image editing. However, existing approaches, which fall short on real applications, are mainly because they were evaluated on synthetic or unrepresentative datasets. To fill this gap and facilitate this research direction, this paper proposes a real-world dataset called SCUT-EnsText that consists of 3,562 diverse images selected from public scene text reading benchmarks, and each image is scrupulously annotated to provide visually plausible erasure targets. With SCUT-EnsText, we design a novel GANbased model termed EraseNet that can automatically remove text located on the natural images. The model is a two-stage network that consists of a coarse-erasure sub-network and a refinement sub-network. The refinement sub-network targets improvement in the feature representation and refinement of the coarse outputs to enhance the removal performance. Additionally, EraseNet contains a segmentation head for text perception and a local-global SN-Patch-GAN with spectral normalization (SN) on both the generator and discriminator for maintaining the training stability and the congruity of the erased regions. A sufficient number of experiments are conducted on both the previous public dataset and the brand-new SCUT-EnsText. Our EraseNet significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods in terms of all metrics, with remarkably superior higherquality results. The dataset and code will be made available at https://github.com/HCIILAB/SCUT-EnsText. Chongyu Liu, Shuaitao Zhang, Canjie Luo, Yongpan Wang

EnsNet: Ensconce Text in the WildabstractA new method is proposed for removing text from natural images. The challenge is to first accurately localize text on the stroke-level and then replace it with a visually plausible background. Unlike previous methods that require image patches to erase scene text, our method, namely ensconce network (EnsNet), can operate end-to-end on a single image without any prior knowledge. The overall structure is an end-to-end trainable FCN-ResNet-18 network with a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN). The feature of the former is first enhanced by a novel lateral connection structure and then refined by four carefully designed losses: multiscale regression loss and content loss, which capture the global discrepancy of different level features; texture loss and total variation loss, which primarily target filling the text region and preserving the reality of the background. The latter is a novel local-sensitive GAN, which attentively assesses the local consistency of the text erased regions. Both qualitative and quantitative sensitivity experiments on synthetic images and the ICDAR 2013 dataset demonstrate that each component of the EnsNet is essential to achieve a good performance. Moreover, our EnsNet can significantly outperform previous state-of-the-art methods in terms of all metrics. In addition, a qualitative experiment conducted on the SBMNet dataset further demonstrates that the proposed method can also preform well on general object (such as pedestrians) removal tasks. EnsNet is extremely fast, which can preform at 333 fps on an i5-8600 CPU device. Shuaitao Zhang, Yaoxiong Huang, Songxuan Lai

Tightness-Aware Evaluation Protocol for Scene Text DetectionabstractEvaluation protocols play key role in the developmental progress of text detection methods. There are strict requirements to ensure that the evaluation methods are fair, objective and reasonable. However, existing metrics exhibit some obvious drawbacks: 1) They are not goal-oriented; 2) they cannot recognize the tightness of detection methods; 3) existing one-to-many and many-to-one solutions involve inherent loopholes and deficiencies. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel evaluation protocol called Tightness-aware Intersect-over-Union (TIoU) metric that could quantify completeness of ground truth, compactness of detection, and tightness of matching degree. Specifically, instead of merely using the IoU value, two common detection behaviors are properly considered; meanwhile, directly using the score of TIoU to recognize the tightness. In addition, we further propose a straightforward method to address the annotation granularity issue, which can fairly evaluate word and text-line detections simultaneously. By adopting the detection results from published methods and general object detection frameworks, comprehensive experiments on ICDAR 2013 and ICDAR 2015 datasets are conducted to compare recent metrics and the proposed TIoU metric. The comparison demonstrated some promising new prospects, e.g., determining the methods and frameworks for which the detection is tighter and more beneficial to recognize. Our method is extremely simple; however, the novelty is none other than the proposed metric can utilize simplest but reasonable improvements to lead to many interesting and insightful prospects and solving most the issues of the previous metrics. | 2019 | Adversarial Feature Enhancing Network for End-to-End Handwritten Paragraph RecognitionabstractTo date, offline handwriting paragraph recognition systems either separately crop text line images and recognize them or perform implicit line segmentation by integrating complicated multi-dimensional long short-term memory (MDLSTM) with an attention mechanism. The former abovementioned approachs could lead to sub-optimal performances while the latter is very time-consuming. In this paper, a fast end-to-end system, called adversarial feature enhancing network (AFEN), is proposed for offline handwritten paragraph recognition. The proposed AFEN system comprises five components: a shared feature extractor for robust feature learning, a text detection branch for text box proposal; RoIRotate for oriented feature region extraction, an adversarial feature learning network for joint feature learning of text detection and recognition branch, and a text recognition branch for text transcription. Experiments on two popular handwritten paragraph recognition benchmarks, namely IAM and Rimes are used to verify the efficacy of the proposed AFEN system. The proposed approach yields impressive results compared to previously proposed systems in the literature. Yaoxiong Huang, Zecheng Xie, Shuaitao Zhang

| 2019 | Curved scene text detection via transverse and longitudinal sequence connectionabstractCurved text detection is a difficult problem that has not been addressed sufficiently. To highlight the difficulties in reading curved text in a real environment, we constructed a curved text dataset called CTW1500, which includes over 10,000 text annotations in 1500 images, and used it to formulate a polygon-based curved text detector that can detect curved text without using an empirical combination. With the seamless integration of recurrent transverse and longitudinal offset connection, our method explores context information instead of predicting points independently, resulting in smoother and more accurate detection. Our approach is designed as a universal method, meaning it can be trained using rectangular or quadrilateral bounding boxes, requiring no extra effort. Experimental results on the CTW1500 dataset and Total-text demonstrated that our method with only a light backbone can outperform state-of-the-art methods by a large margin. Our method also achieved state-of-the-art performance on the MSRA-TD500 dataset, demonstrating its promising generalization ability.
