2025 Adaptive Multi-Scale Language Reinforcement for Multimodal Named Entity Recognition
abstract
Over the recent years, multimodal named entity recognition has gained increasing attentions due to its wide applications in social media. The key factor of multimodal named entity recognition is to effectively fuse information of different modalities. Existing works mainly focus on reinforcing textual representations by fusing image features via the cross-modal attention mechanism. However, these works are limited in reinforcing the text modality at the token level. As a named entity usually contains several tokens, modeling token-level inter-modal interactions is suboptimal for the multimodal named entity recognition problem. In this work, we propose a multimodal named entity recognition approach dubbed Adaptive Multi-scale Language Reinforcement (AMLR) to implement entity-level language reinforcement. To this end, our model first expands token-level textual representations into multi-scale textual representations which are composed of language units of different lengths. After that, the visual information reinforces the language modality by modeling the cross-modal attention between images and expanded multi-scale textual representations. Unlike existing token-level language reinforcement methods, the word sequences of named entities can be directly interacted with the visual features as a whole, making the modeled cross-modal correlations more reasonable. Although the underlying entity is not given, the training procedure can encourage the relevant image contents to adaptively attend to the appropriate language units, making our approach not rely on the pipeline design. Comprehensive evaluation results on two public Twitter datasets clearly demonstrate the superiority of our proposed model.

2023 SegCLIP: Patch Aggregation with Learnable Centers for Open-Vocabulary Semantic Segmentation
abstract
Recently, the contrastive language-image pre-training, e.g., CLIP, has demonstrated promising results on various downstream tasks. The pre-trained model can capture enriched visual concepts for images by learning from a large scale of text-image data. However, transferring the learned visual knowledge to open-vocabulary semantic segmentation is still under-explored. In this paper, we propose a CLIP-based model named SegCLIP for the topic of open-vocabulary segmentation in an annotation-free manner. The SegCLIP achieves segmentation based on ViT and the main idea is to gather patches with learnable centers to semantic regions through training on text-image pairs. The gathering operation can dynamically capture the semantic groups, which can be used to generate the final segmentation results. We further propose a reconstruction loss on masked patches and a superpixel-based KL loss with pseudo-labels to enhance the visual representation. Experimental results show that our model achieves comparable or superior segmentation accuracy on the PASCAL VOC 2012 (+0.3% mIoU), PASCAL Context (+2.3% mIoU), and COCO (+2.2% mIoU) compared with baselines. We release the code at https://github.com/ArrowLuo/SegCLIP.

2019 DOER: Dual Cross-Shared RNN for Aspect Term-Polarity Co-Extraction
abstract
This paper focuses on two related subtasks of aspect-based sentiment analysis, namely aspect term extraction and aspect sentiment classification, which we call aspect term-polarity co-extraction.The former task is to extract aspects of a product or service from an opinion document, and the latter is to identify the polarity expressed in the document about these extracted aspects. Most existing algorithms address them as two separate tasks and solve them one by one, or only perform one task, which can be complicated for real applications. In this paper, we treat these two tasks as two sequence labeling problems and propose a novel Dual crOss-sharEd RNN framework (DOER) to generate all aspect termpolarity pairs of the input sentence simultaneously.Specifically, DOER involves a dual recurrent neural network to extract the respective representation of each task, and a cross-shared unit to consider the relationship between them.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms state-of-the-art baselines on three benchmark datasets.

2019 Deep Uncertainty Quantification: A Machine Learning Approach for Weather Forecasting
abstract
Weather forecasting is usually solved through numerical weather prediction (NWP), which can sometimes lead to unsatisfactory performance due to inappropriate setting of the initial states. In this paper, we design a data-driven method augmented by an effective information fusion mechanism to learn from historical data that incorporates prior knowledge from NWP. We cast the weather forecasting problem as an end-to-end deep learning problem and solve it by proposing a novel negative log-likelihood error (NLE) loss function. A notable advantage of our proposed method is that it simultaneously implements single-value forecasting and uncertainty quantification, which we refer to as deep uncertainty quantification (DUQ). Efficient deep ensemble strategies are also explored to further improve performance. This new approach was evaluated on a public dataset collected from weather stations in Beijing, China. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed NLE loss significantly improves generalization compared to mean squared error (MSE) loss and mean absolute error (MAE) loss. Compared with NWP, this approach significantly improves accuracy by 47.76%, which is a state-of-the-art result on this benchmark dataset.

2019 Improving Aspect Term Extraction With Bidirectional Dependency Tree Representation
abstract
Aspect term extraction is one of the important subtasks in aspect-based sentiment analysis. Previous studies have shown that using dependency tree structure representation is promising for this task. However, most dependency tree structures involve only one directional propagation on the dependency tree. In this paper, we first propose a novel bidirectional dependency tree network to extract dependency structure features from the given sentences. The key idea is to explicitly incorporate both representations gained separately from the bottom-up and top-down propagation on the given dependency syntactic tree. An end-to-end framework is then developed to integrate the embedded representations and BiLSTM plus CRF to learn both tree-structured and sequential features to solve the aspect term extraction problem. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art baseline models on four benchmark SemEval datasets.
