2012 Four months in daily motion: Dissecting user video requests
abstract
The growth of User-Generated Content (UGC) traffic makes the understanding of its nature a priority for network operators, content providers and equipment suppliers. In this paper, we study a four-month dataset that logs all video requests to DailyMotion made by a fixed subset of users. We were able to infer user sessions from raw data, to propose a Markovian model of these sessions, and to study video popularity and its evolution over time. The presented results are a first step for synthesizing an artificial (but realistic) traffic that could be used in simulations or experimental testbeds.

2012 Performance evaluation of the random replacement policy for networks of caches
abstract
Caching is a key component for Content Distribution Networks and new Information-Centric Network architectures. In this paper, we address performance issues of caching networks running the RND replacement policy. We first prove that when the popularity distribution follows a general power-law with decay exponent α > 1, the miss probability is asymptotic to O( C1-α) for large cache size C. We further evaluate network of caches under RND policy for homogeneous tree networks and extend the analysis to tandem cache networks where caches employ either LRU or RND policies.

2007 Measurement-Based Self Organization of Interfering 802.11 Wireless Access Networks
abstract
The popularity of IEEE 802.11 WLANs has led to dense deployments in urban areas. High density leads to sub-optimal performance unless the interfering networks learn how to optimally use and share the spectrum. This paper proposes two fully distributed algorithms that allow (i) multiple interfering 802.11 access points to select their operating frequency in order to minimize interference, and (ii) users to choose the access point they attach to, in order to get their fair share of the whole network bandwidth. The proposed algorithms rely on Gibbs sampler, and do not require explicit coordination among the wireless devices. They only require the participating wireless nodes to measure local quantities such as interference and transmission delay. The algorithms are shown to lead to optimal bandwidth sharing, where optimality is defined according to the minimal potential delay. We analytically prove the convergence of the proposed algorithms, and study their performance by simulation.
