| 2022 | Metering Homes: Do Energy Efficiency and Privacy Need to Be in Conflict?abstractThe European directive on energy efficiency requires that all meters in multi-apartment buildings installed after 25 October 2020 shall be remotely readable devices where technically feasible and cost effective in terms of being proportionate in relation to the potential energy savings. In practise, this means that some manufacturers produce meters that monitor energy consumption in very short intervals, for example, less than two minutes; even though the directive expects to provide billing information to consumers only once a month starting from 2022. This paper reviews privacy and security risks stemming from the short readouts and provides recommendations for manufacturers and suppliers. The paper focuses on a Wireless M-Bus metering devices that we observed being sold and advertised as the solution to fulfill the European directive on energy efficiency requirements. Nevertheless, we believe that many recommendations and observations are applicable also to other protocols. Libor Polcak, Petr Matousek |

| 2014 | On Reliability of Clock-skew-based Remote Computer IdentificationabstractClocks have a small in-built error. As the error is unique, each clock can be identified. This paper explores remote computer identification based on the estimation of clock skew computed from network packets. The previous knowledge of the method is expanded in various ways: (1) we argue about the amount of data that is necessary to get accurate clock skew estimation, (2) the study of different time stamp sources unveils several irregularities that hinders the identification, and (3) the distribution of clock skew in real network makes the precise identification hard or even impossible. | 2014 | Comment on "Remote Physical Device Fingerprinting"abstractIn this paper we revisited a method to identify computers by their clocks skew computed from TCP timestamps. We introduced our own tool to compute clock skew of computers in a network. We validated that the original method is suitable for the computer identification but we also discovered that Linux hosts running NTP had become immune to the identification. | 2009 | Packet header analysis and field extraction for multigigabit networksabstractPacket header analysis and extraction of header fields needs to be performed in all network devices. As network speed is increasing quickly, high speed packet header processing is required. We propose a new architecture of packet header analysis and fields extraction intended for high-speed FPGA-based network applications. The architecture is able to process 20 Gbps network links with less than 12 percent of available resources of Virtex 5 110 FPGA. Moreover, the presented solution can balance between network throughput and consumed hardware resources to fit application needs. The architecture for packet header processing is generated from standard XML protocol scheme and is strongly optimised for resource consumption and speed by an automatic HDL code generator. Our solution also enables to change the set of extracted header fields on-line without FPGA reconfiguration. Petr Kobierský, Jan Korenek, Libor Polcak |
