| 2024 | DisenBooth: Identity-Preserving Disentangled Tuning for Subject-Driven Text-to-Image GenerationabstractSubject-driven text-to-image generation aims to generate customized images of the given subject based on the text descriptions, which has drawn increasing attention. Existing methods mainly resort to finetuning a pretrained generative model, where the identity-relevant information (e.g., the boy) and the identity-irrelevant information (e.g., the background or the pose of the boy) are entangled in the latent embedding space. However, the highly entangled latent embedding may lead to the failure of subject-driven text-to-image generation as follows: (i) the identity-irrelevant information hidden in the entangled embedding may dominate the generation process, resulting in the generated images heavily dependent on the irrelevant information while ignoring the given text descriptions; (ii) the identity-relevant information carried in the entangled embedding can not be appropriately preserved, resulting in identity change of the subject in the generated images. To tackle the problems, we propose DisenBooth, an identity-preserving disentangled tuning framework for subject-driven text-to-image generation. Specifically, DisenBooth finetunes the pretrained diffusion model in the denoising process. Different from previous works that utilize an entangled embedding to denoise each image, DisenBooth instead utilizes disentangled embeddings to respectively preserve the subject identity and capture the identity-irrelevant information. We further design the novel weak denoising and contrastive embedding auxiliary tuning objectives to achieve the disentanglement. Extensive experiments show that our proposed DisenBooth framework outperforms baseline models for subject-driven text-to-image generation with the identity-preserved embedding. Additionally, by combining the identity-preserved embedding and identity-irrelevant embedding, DisenBooth demonstrates more generation flexibility and controllability. | 2024 | DisenDreamer: Subject-Driven Text-to-Image Generation With Sample-Aware Disentangled TuningabstractSubject-driven text-to-image generation aims to generate customized images of the given subject based on the text descriptions, which has drawn increasing attention recently. Existing methods mainly resort to finetuning a pretrained generative model, where the identity-relevant information (e.g., the boy) and the identity-irrelevant sample-specific information (e.g., the background or the pose of the boy) are entangled in the latent embedding space. However, the highly entangled latent embedding may lead to low subject identity fidelity and text prompt fidelity. To tackle the problems, we propose DisenDreamer, a sample-aware disentangled tuning framework for subject-driven text-to-image generation in this paper. Specifically, DisenDreamer finetunes the pretrained diffusion model in the denoising process. Different from previous works that utilize an entangled embedding to denoise, DisenDreamer instead utilizes a common text embedding to capture the identity-relevant information and a sample-specific visual embedding to capture the identity-irrelevant information. To disentangle the two embeddings, we further design the novel weak common denoising, weak sample-aware denoising, and the contrastive embedding auxiliary tuning objectives. Extensive experiments show that our proposed DisenDreamer framework outperforms baseline models for subject-driven text-to-image generation. Additionally, by combining the identity-relevant and the identity-irrelevant embedding, DisenDreamer demonstrates more generation flexibility and controllability. | 2024 | Unsupervised Image Sequence Registration and Enhancement for Infrared Small Target DetectionabstractIn the burgeoning realm of deep learning and with the introduction of the infrared target detection dataset, infrared small target detection has increasingly garnered attention. Within this domain, multi-frame infrared small target detection stands as a pivotal and challenging sub-task. Notably, some recent methods have exhibited commendable performance in multi-frame infrared scenes. However, these methods were tethered to time-consuming background alignment pre-processing, which impedes their real-world application of multi-frame infrared target detection systems. In this paper, an unsupervised end-to-end framework tailored for infrared image sequence registration was proposed. This framework diverges from traditional registration methods by incorporating a novel Basket-based Hierarchical Temporal Consistency loss. The proposed loss function achieve intra-basket consistency and inter-basket diversity, effectively mitigating issues related to inconsistency. Additionally, the framework includes the Input Thresholding Mask and Output Transformation Mask. These components are crucial for guiding the network’s training process and correcting misalignments. Moreover, the introduction of a dual-level residual enhancer is proposed to enhance the quality of registered images, thereby improving overall performance. Extensive experimental results have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed method over baseline methods. The proposed method achieved a significant improvement in theF1-scoremetric on a public dataset, reaching 0.8882, and an inference speed of 23.34 FPS. This represents an improvement of 0.0190 in performance and a sixfold increase in speed compared to the state-of-the-art method in multi-frame infrared small target detection. | 2023 | Decouple Before Interact: Multi-Modal Prompt Learning for Continual Visual Question AnsweringabstractIn the real world, a desirable Visual Question Answering model is expected to provide correct answers to new questions and images in a continual setting (recognized as CL-VQA). However, existing works formulate CL-VQA from a vision-only or language-only perspective, and straightforwardly apply the uni-modal continual learning (CL) strategies to this multi-modal task, which is improper and suboptimal. On the one hand, such a partial formulation may result in limited evaluations. On the other hand, neglecting the interactions between modalities will lead to poor performance. To tackle these challenging issues, we propose a comprehensive formulation for CL-VQA from the perspective of multi-modal vision-language fusion. Based on our formulation, we further propose MulTi-Modal PRompt LearnIng with DecouPLing bEfore InTeraction (TRIPLET), a novel approach that builds on a pre-trained vision-language model and consists of decoupled prompts and prompt interaction strategies to capture the complex interactions between modalities. In particular, decoupled prompts contain learnable parameters that are decoupled w.r.t different aspects, and the prompt interaction strategies are in charge of modeling interactions between inputs and prompts. Additionally, we build two CL-VQA benchmarks for a more comprehensive evaluation. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our TRIPLET outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both uni-modal and multi-modal continual settings for CL-VQA. | 2023 | Curriculum-Listener: Consistency- and Complementarity-Aware Audio-Enhanced Temporal Sentence GroundingabstractTemporal Sentence Grounding aims to retrieve a video moment given a natural language query. Most existing literature merely focuses on visual information in videos without considering the naturally accompanied audio which may contain rich semantics. The few works considering audio simply regard it as an additional modality, overlooking that: i) it's non-trivial to explore consistency and complementarity between audio and visual; ii) such exploration requires handling different levels of information densities and noises in the two modalities. To tackle these challenges, we propose Adaptive Dual-branch Promoted Network (ADPN) to exploit such consistency and complementarity: i) we introduce a dual-branch pipeline capable of jointly training visual-only and audio-visual branches to simultaneously eliminate inter-modal interference; ii) we design Text-Guided Clues Miner (TGCM) to discover crucial locating clues via considering both consistency and complementarity during audio-visual interaction guided by text semantics; iii) we propose a novel curriculum-based denoising optimization strategy, where we adaptively evaluate sample difficulty as a measure of noise intensity in a self-aware fashion. Extensive experiments show the state-of-the-art performance of our method. Houlun Chen, Xin Wang 0019, Xiaohan Lan, Hong Chen 0011, Xuguang Duan, Jia Jia 0001, Wenwu Zhu 0001 |

| 2023 | H2V4Sports: Real-Time Horizontal-to-Vertical Video Converter for Sports Lives via Fast Object Detection and TrackingabstractWe present H2V4Sports, a real-time horizontal-to-vertical video converter specifically designed for sports live broadcasts. With the increasing demand of smartphone users who prefer to watch sports events on their vertical screens anywhere, anytime, our platform provides a seamless viewing experience. We achieve this by fine-tuning and pruning an object detector and tracker, which enables us to provide real-time, accurate key-object tracking results despite the complexity of sports scenes. Additionally, we propose a video virtual director platform that captures the most informative vertical zones from horizontal video live frames using various director logic for a smooth frame-to-frame transition. We have successfully demonstrated our platform in two popular sports: basketball and diving, and the results indicate that our technology delivers high-quality vertical scenes that are beneficial for smartphone users and other vertical scenarios. | 2023 | Intra- and Inter-Modal Curriculum for Multimodal LearningabstractMultimodal learning has been widely studied and applied due to its improvement over previous unimodal tasks and its effectiveness on emerging multimodal challenges. However, it has been reported that modal encoders are under-optimized in multimodal learning in contrast to unimodal learning, especially when some modalities are dominant over others. Existing solutions to this problem suffer from two limitations: i) they merely focus on inter-modal balance, failing to consider the influence of intra-modal data on each modality; ii) their implementations heavily rely on unimodal performances or losses, thus being suboptimal for the tasks requiring modal interactions (e.g., visual question answering). To tackle these limitations, we propose I2MCL, a generic Intra- and Inter-Modal Curriculum Learning framework which simultaneously considers both data difficulty and modality balance for multimodal learning. In the intra-modal curriculum, we adopt a pretrained teacher model to obtain knowledge distillation loss as the difficulty measurer, which determines the data weights within the corresponding modality. In the inter-modal curriculum, we utilize a Pareto optimization strategy to measure and compare the gradients from distillation loss and task loss across modalities, capable of determining whether a modality should learn from the task or its teacher. Empirical experiments on various tasks including multimodal classification, visual question answering and visual entailment demonstrate that our proposed I2MCL is able to tackle the under-optimized modality problem and bring consistent improvement to multimodal learning. | 2023 | DeepLogic: Joint Learning of Neural Perception and Logical ReasoningabstractNeural-symbolic learning, aiming to combine the perceiving power of neural perception and the reasoning power of symbolic logic together, has drawn increasing research attention. However, existing works simply cascade the two components together and optimize them isolatedly, failing to utilize the mutual enhancing information between them. To address this problem, we propose DeepLogic, a framework with joint learning of neural perception and logical reasoning, such that these two components are jointly optimized through mutual supervision signals. In particular, the proposed DeepLogic framework contains a deep-logic module that is capable of representing complex first-order-logic formulas in a tree structure with basic logic operators. We then theoretically quantify the mutual supervision signals and propose the deep&logic optimization algorithm for joint optimization. We further prove the convergence of DeepLogic and conduct extensive experiments on model performance, convergence, and generalization, as well as its extension to the continuous domain. The experimental results show that through jointly learning both perceptual ability and logic formulas in a weakly supervised manner, our proposed DeepLogic framework can significantly outperform DNN-based baselines by a great margin and beat other strong baselines without out-of-box tools. | 2023 | STDMANet: Spatio-Temporal Differential Multiscale Attention Network for Small Moving Infrared Target DetectionabstractInfrared target detection has important applications in rescue and Earth observation. However, the disadvantages of low signal-to-clutter ratios and severe background noise interference for infrared imaging pose great challenges to the detection technology for infrared dim targets. Most algorithms only extract features from the spatial domain, while the lack of temporal information results in unsatisfactory detection performance when the difference between the target and the background is not significant enough. Although some methods utilize temporal information in the detection process, these nonlearning-based methods fail to incorporate the complex and changeable background, and need to adjust parameters according to the input. To tackle this problem, we proposed a Spatio-Temporal Differential Multiscale Attention Network (STDMANet), a learning-based method for multiframe infrared small target detection in this article. Our STDMANet first used the temporal multiscale feature extractor to obtain spatiotemporal (ST) features from multiple time scales and then resorted them to the spatial multiscale feature refiner to enhance the semantics of ST features on the premise of maintaining the position information of small targets. Finally, unlike other learning-based networks that require binary masks for training, we designed a mask-weighted heatmap loss to train the network with only center point annotations. At the same time, the proposed loss can balance missing detection and false alarm, so as to achieve a good balance between finding the targets and suppressing the background. Extensive quantitative experiments on public datasets validated that the proposed STDMANet could improve the metric${F_{1}}$score up to 0.9744, surpassing the state-of-the-art baseline by 0.1682. Qualitative experiments show the proposed method could stably extract foreground moving targets from video sequences with various backgrounds while reducing false alarm rate better than other recent baseline methods. | 2022 | Parametric Visual Program Induction with Function ModularizationabstractGenerating programs to describe visual observations has gained much research attention recently. However, most of the existing approaches are based on non-parametric primitive functions, making them unable to handle complex visual scenes involving many attributes and details. In this paper, we propose the concept of parametric visual program induction. Learning to generate parametric programs for visual scenes is challenging due to the huge number of function variants and the complex function correlations. To solve these challenges, we propose the method of function modularization, capable of dealing with numerous function variants and complex correlations. Specifically, we model each parametric function as a multi-head self-contained neural module to cover different function variants. Moreover, to eliminate the complex correlations between functions, we propose the hierarchical heterogeneous Monto-Carlo tree search (H2MCTS) algorithm which can provide high-quality uncorrelated supervision during training, and serve as an efficient searching technique during testing. We demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method on three visual program induction datasets involving parametric primitive functions. Experimental results show that our proposed model is able to significantly outperform the state-of-the-art baseline methods in terms of generating accurate programs. | 2022 | Dynamic Spatio-Temporal Modular Network for Video Question AnsweringabstractVideo Question Answering (VideoQA) aims to understand given videos and questions comprehensively by generating correct answers. However, existing methods usually rely on end-to-end black-box deep neural networks to infer the answers, which significantly differs from human logic reasoning, thus lacking the ability to explain. Besides, the performances of existing methods tend to drop when answering compositional questions involving realistic scenarios. To tackle these challenges, we propose a Dynamic Spatio-Temporal Modular Network (DSTN) model, which utilizes a spatio-temporal modular network to simulate the compositional reasoning procedure of human beings. Concretely, we divide the task of answering a given question into a set of sub-tasks focusing on certain key concepts in questions and videos such as objects, actions, temporal orders, etc. Each sub-task can be solved with a separately designed module, e.g., spatial attention module, temporal attention module, logic module, and answer module. Then we dynamically assemble different modules assigned with different sub-tasks to generate a tree-structured spatio-temporal modular neural network for human-like reasoning before producing the final answer for the question. We carry out extensive experiments on the AGQA dataset to demonstrate our proposed DSTN model can significantly outperform several baseline methods in various settings. Moreover, we evaluate intermediate results and visualize each reasoning step to verify the rationality of different modules and the explainability of the proposed DSTN model. | 2022 | AVQA: A Dataset for Audio-Visual Question Answering on VideosabstractAudio-visual question answering aims to answer questions regarding both audio and visual modalities in a given video, and has drawn increasing research interest in recent years. However, there have been no appropriate datasets for this challenging task on videos in real-life scenarios so far. They are either designed with questions containing only visual clues without taking any audio information into account, or considering audio with restrictions to specific scenarios, such as panoramic videos and videos about music performances. In this paper, to overcome the limitations of existing datasets, we introduce AVQA, a new audio-visual question answering dataset on videos in real-life scenarios. We collect 57,015 videos from daily audio-visual activities and 57,335 specially-designed question-answer pairs relying on clues from both modalities, where information contained in a single modality is insufficient or ambiguous. Furthermore, we propose a Hierarchical Audio-Visual Fusing module to model multiple semantic correlations among audio, visual, and text modalities and conduct ablation studies to analyze the role of different modalities on our datasets. Experimental results show that our proposed method significantly improves the audio-visual question answering performance over various question types. Therefore, AVQA can provide an adequate testbed for the generation of models with a deeper understanding of multimodal information on audio-visual question answering in real-life scenarios. | 2022 | Curriculum-NAS: Curriculum Weight-Sharing Neural Architecture SearchabstractNeural Architecture Search (NAS) is an effective way to automatically design neural architectures for various multimedia applications. Weight-sharing, as one of the most popular NAS strategies, has been widely adopted due to its search efficiency. Existing weight-sharing NAS methods overlook the influence of data distribution and treat each data sample equally. Contrastively, in this paper, we empirically discover that different data samples have different influences on architectures, e.g., some data samples are easy to fit by certain architectures but hard by others. Hence, there exist architectures with better performances on early data samples being more likely to be discovered in the whole NAS searching process, which leads to a suboptimal searching result. To tackle this problem, we propose Curriculum-NAS, a curriculum training framework on weight-sharing NAS, which dynamically changes the training data weights during the searching process. In particular, Curriculum-NAS utilizes the multiple subnets included in weight-sharing NAS to jointly assess data uncertainty, which serves as the difficulty criterion in a curriculum manner, so that the potentially optimal architectures can obtain higher probability of being fully trained and discovered. Extensive experiments on several image and text datasets demonstrate that our Curriculum-NAS can bring consistent improvement over existing weight-sharing NAS. | 2020 | Multi-modal Contextual Graph Neural Network for Text Visual Question AnsweringabstractText visual question answering (TextVQA) targets at answering the question related to texts appearing in the given images, posing more challenges than VQA by requiring a deeper recognition and understanding of various shapes of human-readable scene texts as well as their meanings in different contexts. Existing works on TextVQA suffer from two weaknesses: i) scene texts and non-textual objects are processed separately and independently without considering their mutual interactions during the question understanding and answering process, ii) scene texts are encoded only through word embeddings without taking the corresponding visual appearance features as well as their potential relationships with other non-textual objects in the images into account. To overcome the weakness of existing works, we propose a novel multi-modal contextual graph neural network (MCG) model for TextVQA. The proposed MCG model can capture the relationships between visual features of scene texts and non-textual objects in the given images as well as utilize richer sources of multi-modal features to improve the model performance. In particular, we encode the scene texts into richer features containing textual, visual and positional features, then model the visual relations between scene texts and non-textual objects through a contextual graph neural network. Our extensive experiments on real-world dataset demonstrate the advantages of the proposed MCG model over baseline approaches. Yaoyuan Liang, Xin Wang 0019, Xuguang Duan, Wenwu Zhu 0001 |

| 2020 | MEmoR: A Dataset for Multimodal Emotion Reasoning in VideosabstractHumans can perceive subtle emotions from various cues and contexts, even without hearing or seeing others. However, existing video datasets mainly focus on recognizing the emotions of the speakers from complete modalities. In this work, we present the task of multimodal emotion reasoning in videos. Beyond directly recognizing emotions from multimodal signals of target persons, this task requires a machine capable of reasoning about human emotions from the contexts and surrounding world. To facilitate the study towards this task, we introduce a new dataset, MEmoR, that provides fine-grained emotion annotations for both speakers and non-speakers. The videos in MEmoR are collected from TV shows closely in real-life scenarios. In these videos, while speakers may be non-visually described, non-speakers always deliver no audio-textual signals and are often visually inconspicuous. This modality-missing characteristic makes MEmoR a more practical yet challenging testbed for multimodal emotion reasoning. In support of various reasoning behaviors, the proposed MEmoR dataset provides both short-term contexts and external knowledge. We further propose an attention-based reasoning approach to model the intra-personal emotion contexts, inter-personal emotion propagation, and the personalities of different individuals. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed approach outperforms related baselines significantly. We isolate and analyze the validity of different reasoning modules across various emotions of speakers and non-speakers. Finally, we draw forth several future research directions for multimodal emotion reasoning with MEmoR, aiming to empower high Emotional Quotient (EQ) in modern artificial intelligence systems. | 2019 | Watch, Reason and Code: Learning to Represent Videos Using ProgramabstractHumans have a surprising capacity to induce general rules that describe the specific actions portrayed in a video sequence. The rules learned through this kind of process allow us to achieve similar goals to those shown in the video but in more general circumstances. Enabling an agent to achieve the same capacity represents a significant challenge. In this paper, we propose a Watch-Reason-Code(WRC) model to synthesise programs that describe the process carried out in a set of video sequences. The 'watch' stage is simply a video encoder that encodes videos to multiple feature vectors. The 'reason' stage takes as input the features from multiple diverse videos and generates a compact feature representation via a novel deviation-pooling method. The 'code' stage is a multi-sound decoder that the first step leverages to generate a draft program layout with possible useful statements and perceptions. Further steps then take these outputs and generate a fully structured, compile-able and executable program. We evaluate the effectiveness of our model in two video-to-program synthesis environments, Karel andVizDoom, showing that we can achieve the state-of-the-art under a variety of settings. | 2018 | Learning-to-Ask: Knowledge Acquisition via 20 QuestionsabstractAlmost all the knowledge empowered applications rely upon accurate knowledge, which has to be either collected manually with high cost, or extracted automatically with unignorable errors. In this paper, we study 20 Questions, an online interactive game where each question-response pair corresponds to a fact of the target entity, to acquire highly accurate knowledge effectively with nearly zero labor cost. Knowledge acquisition via 20 Questions predominantly presents two challenges to the intelligent agent playing games with human players. The first one is to seek enough information and identify the target entity with as few questions as possible, while the second one is to leverage the remaining questioning opportunities to acquire valuable knowledge effectively, both of which count on good questioning strategies. To address these challenges, we propose the Learning-to-Ask (LA) framework, within which the agent learns smart questioning strategies for information seeking and knowledge acquisition by means of deep reinforcement learning and generalized matrix factorization respectively. In addition, a Bayesian approach to represent knowledge is adopted to ensure robustness to noisy user responses. Simulating experiments on real data show that LA is able to equip the agent with effective questioning strategies, which result in high winning rates and rapid knowledge acquisition. Moreover, the questioning strategies for information seeking and knowledge acquisition boost the performance of each other, allowing the agent to start with a relatively small knowledge set and quickly improve its knowledge base in the absence of constant human supervision. | 2018 | Weakly Supervised Dense Event Captioning in VideosabstractDense event captioning aims to detect and describe all events of interest contained in a video. Despite the advanced development in this area, existing methods tackle this task by making use of dense temporal annotations, which is dramatically source-consuming. This paper formulates a new problem: weakly supervised dense event captioning, which does not require temporal segment annotations for model training. Our solution is based on the one-to-one correspondence assumption, each caption describes one temporal segment, and each temporal segment has one caption, which holds in current benchmark datasets and most real world cases. We decompose the problem into a pair of dual problems: event captioning and sentence localization and present a cycle system to train our model. Extensive experimental results are provided to demonstrate the ability of our model on both dense event captioning and sentence localization in videos.
